Mixcraft 8 Home Studio is a relatively affordable DAW for beginners and hobby musicians, offering a basic setup with virtual instruments and effects, allowing music production on up to 16 tracks. The interface is intuitive and resembles other well-known DAWs, which makes getting started easier. And that's basically it - well, not quite… Because while Mixcraft 8 is beginner-friendly and runs reasonably stable, but why paying for something you can get elsewhere for free, in equal or even better quality? Someone without much experience, like one of my students, will very likely run into technical issues when trying to combine 32-bit and 64-bit plugins. And apparently plugins aren’t always recognized reliably and for beginners, it can be confusing to figure out how and where VST plugins are installed, or scanned and managed. Additionally the MIDI features are fairly basic. And that one student in particular was really determined to start out with Mixcraft, maybe the trailer got to him, since he's also into rock and metal. But by now he’s admitted he should’ve tried the free Tracktion Waveform instead. These days, he’s using Bitwig Essentials and couldn’t be happier. Since there’s such a wide range of software out there, my advice is always to try out free options first. Some are more than enough for specific purposes (like Audacity or Reaper), others are simply fun to use (like MPC Beats), and some are perfect for figuring out some things (like Studio One Prime). Either way you’ve got to experiment a bit and dive into it and make comparisons.

My 9-year old son uses this program at his gifted school. I was really surprised to find it available on Steam, on a big sale no less. It's complex enough that budding professionals probably get a lot out of it, but it's also streamlined enough that my son can find everything he needs to make cool music.

It's easy to use and great for beginners, but this edition is 32-bit only, so you'll need 32-bit VSTs. If you want to use 64-bit plugins, JBridger can convert them, but expect some crashes. Also, not sure if it's just me, but the mid pan didn't feel perfectly centered (i had to nudge it slightly to the left). Good for simple projects, but not ideal if you need 64-bit support or pro features.

I have purchased Mixcraft 8 Home Studio like before the pandemic for only $20, which is a bargain. Now, I am not a musician, but I still needed such software. I have just wanted the most basic audio and video editing software for the cheapest price. And this delivers it! I have put an Early Access demo of my game Chronicles of Veldoria on Steam. Obviously, I am still very much developing it. I have used this software for creating both the gifs and trailer for that Steam page. Last time I did so was today (02/22/2025). I have used OBS to capture the video of game (it is such an awesome free software), convert it from MKV to MP$, edit it via Mixcraft 8 Home Studio, and do the "finishing touches" via EZ Gif. I bought this software initially to just cut out some parts of some songs (like cut out extended parts of some songs that I download via YouTube and in some rare cases, cut out the parts of songs that are mediocre or monotone and just leave the good/best part intact) as well as do some other video editing. And up till now, it totally delivers it.

Great for recording or messing around with loops from home. Limited to 16 tracks to be aware. Seen it drop to £10 on sales sometimes. If you want the full experience (more tracks, sub-mixes, melodyne e.t.c.) then look at getting Mixcraft 10.5 Recording or Pro Studio on Acoustica's website.
