I liked the game quite a lot, but I found the progression extremely slow, even for an idle game. The upside is that the game can overlay other windows and programs, so you always have the spider companion with you, even while playing something else or watching a show, etc. And besides being cute, there are constant interactions: managing the inventory, selling the insects caught in the web and using the money to buy skins for the spider and upgrades that help with the game’s progression and make the grind a bit easier.

I can't bring myself to give this game a negative review despite wanting to. Its' overall design is very charming; the spider-web is very responsive to the spider, and also looks really cute. Unfortunately for me, this game is not very enjoyable though. Imo, giving your wallet or bug box a capacity is practically pointless and simply makes the game less fun. It just makes it so that you cannot idle, as your initial bug capacity is a mere 5. (Can't remember the wallet capacity) The first bug you can successfully collect is worth a single coin. I remember the first upgrades being btw ~25-50 coins, which are very expensive. Because of the cap and frequency of bugs getting captured, you can't idle until you upgrade your cap multiple times. But there is basically nothing to this game other than waiting for bugs to get captured. In summary, the upgrades makes the game frustratingly boring for me. I think the game should either allow me to fully idle, and if it won't do that, it ought to be more interactive and fun. A clicker mechanic can be added maybe, idk. I hope the game gets balanced out a bit, so I can update my review. TLDR; the game is built to be idle, but has mechanics that doesn't allow you to fully idle; and it is too boring as an interactive game for the upgrades (core mechanics) to make sense.

I have a fear of spiders, so what better than to buy a game where a spider hangs out in the corner of my second monitor 24/7? The spider is actually really sweet <33

So here's the thing. I'm gonna have a whole ass story to go with this review. I'm arachnaphobic. Have been since I was a kid. I was on a medication that made me experience a vivid hallucination where in my self and my room were covered in spiders. It's not just that I find them creepy, it was childhood trauma. Fast forward to the Summer of 2024. My son, who loves all inverts, uses his little bug catching kit to catch a Carolina Jumping Spider. I would not let him in the house with it. So my kid kept it in the garage and was trying to catch food for it and care for it. After about a week and a half I go outside to check on it, worried my kid might actually be hurting it. I have a policy... come in my house and have problems but if you're outside that's your space. I was scared of it... but I didn't want it to die. Sure enough there were clear signs it was starving and it was just a baby. So I caved. My kid clearly cared about this spider. I made an emergency run to Petco and bought food and we ordered a small glass jumping spider terrarium on Amazon. Sent a pic of her to my biologist friend in another state and I was informed our spider was a girl. We went foraging for cool sticks and rocks for the tank. Sanitized them. Got the whole thing ready for her by the end of the week. And Killi (full name Killi Hairy... I shit you not) had a home. We had Killi for around 10 months. In that time helped my kid take care of her... and slowly... but surely... I became cool with her. To the point! That when we went to visit my biologist friend she offered my kid a tarantula and I said yes. Even held one at a bug pavilion because my son was so worried about my phobia he was saying no and I wanted to prove I was actually cool with it (I just wasn't gonna help care for it). To the enjoyment of everyone in the room I successfully held it, but alas it did not help and my son passed up on the tarantula. It was right before the vacation that Killi passed away. It was a sad moment that surprisingly hit me harder than my kid (we are both Autistic and he was very matter of fact "Mama they don't live that long..."). But he did grieve because he didn't want a new spider right away. Killi died in March of 2025. Just about a month ago... he decided he wanted a new spider (and a mantis). The mantis has long since moved to a tank but his jumper (now named Jumpy) was still in the little cup we brought them home in from the local exotic pet store. Jumpy chilled on my desk while I kept an eye on them as I was concerned over them not eating enough (it was because of a molt). But I got used to having Jumpy on my desk. Yesterday Jumpy got moved to Killi's old terrarium. It was a sad moment cleaning out the old remnants of Killi, but Jumpy gladly and curiously went into their new home. The tank is now in my kids room next to the mantis's (his name is Hercules). But you know what? This arachnaphobes desk felt a little lonely... and I just happened upon this little desktop idle game while browsing the animal fest sale. I'm still terrified of spiders... I don't think that will ever go away. But at least I now have no fear of jumping spiders. To the point that I have noticed the one missing from my desk and decided I needed a digital buddy to fill that void. And it fills that need. Just like my eyes would catch Jumpy moving around in their cup under my monitor. I now look up periodically at the little ball of fuzz in the corner of my monitor to check on him. So yeah... I'm enjoying my time with My Little Spider. Just looking up as I watch videos or browse the web and seeing that cute little dude hanging out on my monitor. Catching bugs, helping it catch bugs, upgrading it, giving it tiny hats, but mostly just looking at his cute little big eyed face. I have named him Steve. (As an aside for for an actual review. If you are arachnaphobic there is a mode that removes the legs and just makes the spood a little fuzz ball and there are other skins as well. Genuinely if I was bothered by the spood... I don't think this mode would help. That being said, whether it's the fact I'm cool with jumping spiders now or just the design of the spood Steve does not freak me out. You can update the quality of the web, the speed of your spood, your wallet, the thing you store bugs caught in etc. By far the cutest thing he does is you can pick him up and drag him around your desk top. He'll say "I'm flying!" and then crawl across the bottom of your desk top back to the web. Which you can have anywhere on your monitor. It's a very chill little friend to keep on your desk top while doing other things with just enough to do that engage you when you need something to break up your tasks. The game launches and runs without any tweak on Linux, unfortunately the window is not transparent and click-through as intended, there is only a bright green background where the transparency should be. Not going to downvote cause obviously this was made for windows, but leaving this out there if this is relevant for someone :) it also looks and sounds really cute and well made! maybe one day Proton will support this kind of special game!
