wanna experence msc but its so cold that your nuts fall off? well i have the game for you! WARING: dont go into this as a newbe, get MSC and play that...(not sponsered btw) THEN come to this game. but if your experenced, GET IT NOW. we have more beer, a problam, A JOB (sorry about that all you unemployed dudes and dudets), a gas staiton, ATM's, ice racing yobbos, a cruddy little Ford two door thats been rotting in a garadge for over ten years, a flea market, a old folks home with your Uncle in it whos coughing sounds like nails on a chalkbord, about three hours of daylight and a sometimes kinda toxic to newbies fandom (thats chill for the most part, relax im not pointing ALL of you out)... so get ready to feel the cold and the mental pain of winter and pray you dont slip and slide into a tree at 100mph in your little daliy driver!
I've never felt the spirit of quietly suffocating rural life more than playing this game. It's almost literary in how striking it is. You are the same person as you were in MSC. But instead of a teenager with nothing but free-time, you're an adult living with the consequences of the decisions you made as a teenager with nothing but free-time. You no longer get thirsty, you have a problem. You live in a small apartment that's got nothing but a CD system, a bed, and beer bottles. The lack of books or... anything at all is notable: this is all your world is. It's shocking in its smallness, especially compared to MSC. The money you have in your pocket gives a feeling of independence, and you have your own car from the start. Which is brilliantly done. As someone from Buffalo, walking out to your car, starting it, and waiting for it to defrost is a small reality that almost never gets shown in media. Turning the heat up at first and then slowly turning it down as you drive because you're wearing a jacket and you're getting hot? That's such a wonderful touch. But what was so striking was the emptiness: it's been 4 years, and the town has changed. There's now a gas station! But that meant the corner store went out of business. The gas station is big! It's got seating for people, it's got a restaurant, it's got indoor plumbing, it's got a market! No one is there. The market has the same tiny selection of goods that the tiny store did. The shelves are mostly empty. The ads show fresh fruits: oranges! Strawberries! Kiwi! None of those are there. The juice concentrate is the closest thing. Why is your character still there? Why is ANYONE still there? For one reason or another, they can't leave. Your constantly gone parents and their large house with its central location, their ownership of the cottage on the lake, that you had a car just sitting around to fix, that your character didn't seem all that pressured to do anything... MSC seems less like a portrait of freedom and more like the bait to a trap you didn't see. The 2k in your pocket and your car that needs to be plugged in at night isn't independence at all. Because it won't let you escape your fate. There's no road out of this town, and your parents don't own enough of it to do anything other than keep you anchored to it. MWC, like MSC, is like a local Finnish spirit. It's rough, it's unpleasant, it's strange, but that's the point. That's its sense of place coming through. You're having a terroir-driven experience, marvel in it.
After playing this game for 11+ hours, I can confidently say that My Summer Car now looks like a vacation. You spawn in a large house with all the parts waiting in your dad’s garage, so you can immediately start building the car. In MWC, you spawn as a probably depressed alcoholic in a dirty, small apartment. You need to work a 9–5 job, deal with snow (I mean no sh!t, Sherlock — it says WINTER in the title), ice, steamed windows while driving, a piece-of-junk starter car that can’t even idle unless it’s warm, and a battery that dies in a matter of minutes. DON'T FORGET TO TURN OFF THE BLOWER WHEN TURNING OFF THE ENGINE. All of that on top of building another piece of sh!t out of old recycled parts ordered through the phone from god-knows who. Multiple phone numbers, yet the same sick voice. How many parts could this fcker have???!!! If I play this game much longer, I might end up like the player — a scumbag. So yeah, very realistic. Would recommend to anyone. 11/10
