NEO AQUARIUM - The King of Crustaceans, developed by Calappa Games and published by PLAYISM, is a bizarre, unapologetically strange arena fighter that dares to turn sea creatures into laser-firing, shell-shattering warriors. It’s a game that thrives on its absurdity, inviting players to embrace the ridiculous concept of underwater crustacean combat in fully three-dimensional environments. While it might sound like a novelty—or even a joke—there’s a surprising amount of effort and mechanical depth beneath its offbeat premise. It’s not a conventional fighting game by any means, but it’s certainly a memorable one. The gameplay centers around one-on-one or small group battles between crustaceans like lobsters, crabs, and even barnacles. Each creature has its own stats and unique set of attacks, ranging from traditional physical strikes with claws to bizarre projectile lasers and energy blasts. Battles take place in a fully 3D aquatic environment where players float, dash, and rotate in all directions. Movement feels like swimming in a tank, slow and deliberate at first, but learning how to control your creature effectively becomes part of the challenge. There’s a distinct weight to every action, whether it’s a claw strike or an evasive spin. What sets the combat apart is the use of body part targeting—players can specifically damage and dismember enemy limbs, which affects performance and adds a layer of tactics to the otherwise chaotic action. The story mode adds an extra layer of surreal charm. Rather than a cohesive plot, it offers a loosely connected series of missions with strange dialogue and an overarching narrative that barely makes sense—and yet, that’s part of the appeal. The game never takes itself too seriously. It presents a world where crustaceans are not just sentient, but engaged in interdimensional aquatic warfare, complete with bizarre philosophical undertones and techno-mystical overtones. Each mission serves as a vehicle for unlocking more creatures, arenas, and parts for the customizable aquarium editor, which allows you to personalize your own battle environments with decorative marine life and terrain elements. Visually, NEO AQUARIUM embraces its low-budget aesthetic with sincerity. The models are functional but far from polished, and animations can be stiff or janky. The lighting effects during battles are flashy and over-the-top, often to the point of obscuring what’s happening on-screen. The UI is clunky, and camera angles can be frustrating, especially when battles get hectic. Still, despite its technical shortcomings, the visual style matches the tone of the game—awkward, a little chaotic, but entirely committed to its unique vision. There’s a sense of charm in how unabashedly weird it all is, and that feeling carries the experience more than the fidelity of the graphics ever could. Multiplayer is where the game truly shines. Playing with friends locally or online turns what can feel like a clumsy solo experience into a shared bout of hilarity. The unpredictable nature of the controls, the absurd special moves, and the constant threat of having your limbs ripped off mid-battle create moments of spontaneous laughter and chaos. Matches are rarely balanced, but they’re often entertaining. It’s not the kind of game you master through hours of practice—instead, it’s one you fire up for the sheer novelty and stick with for the unexpected joy of watching a shrimp blast a laser at a crab while spinning upside down. The aquarium customization feature is an odd but welcome addition. Between battles, you can decorate your own aquatic space with collected items, creating a sort of personal exhibit or theme park. It doesn’t have any real gameplay impact, but it reinforces the game’s underlying sense of being more than just a fighter—it’s an aquatic oddity simulator. It gives players a sense of progression, even if the rewards are purely cosmetic. Still, for completionists or those who enjoy weird, sandbox-like elements in their games, this feature adds a layer of depth and replayability. There are, however, plenty of rough edges. The controls take time to adjust to and never quite feel intuitive. The camera often works against the player, making combat feel more frustrating than it should be. Some enemy AI patterns can be exploited easily, while others are inexplicably punishing. Hit detection can be inconsistent, especially when projectiles are involved. The learning curve isn’t steep in terms of mastering combos—there aren’t really any—but simply learning how to navigate the game’s systems and work around its quirks is its own process. That said, these flaws become part of the game’s charm for those willing to accept its eccentricities. In the end, NEO AQUARIUM - The King of Crustaceans is the kind of game that defies easy categorization. It’s not polished or balanced, and it’s not trying to be. It’s a game that exists to celebrate the bizarre, to offer something so left-field that you can’t help but admire its audacity. For players looking for something truly different—something that feels like it belongs in a parallel dimension of gaming—this is a hidden gem. It’s weird, janky, occasionally frustrating, but also creative, hilarious, and unlike anything else on the market. If you’re open to games that don’t play by conventional rules and you enjoy diving into the obscure, NEO AQUARIUM is an experience worth having—if only to say you fought a laser-wielding lobster and lived to tell the tale.
