REVIEW #123 Nimble Quest ---------- I first heard of this arcade-style action title when I ran across it in the Google Play store, and when I found out years later that Nimble Quest had a PC release on Steam, I was both surprised and highly excited. This is a fun, retro-themed Snake clone that adds graphics and music that clearly hearken back to the 16-bit era of gaming, and the implementation of these aesthetic elements is near perfection, giving the game an Amiga computer game or SNES-era Final Fantasy-meets-The Legend of Zelda sort of feel. Even the gameplay and top-down perspective somewhat resemble running through old-school LoZ dungeons (if Link was cursed with an inability to stop sprinting, that is.) In Nimble Quest, players control a hero character of their choosing, and this character is constantly running on top of a two-dimensional play field. If a player's character gets close to an enemy (and, depending on the character, is facing said enemy), that character will attack. Defeated enemies will drop temporary power-ups, jewels and coins that are used to purchased buffs and permanent upgrades, and other heroes that will follow the player's character in a conga-line formation. Colliding the lead character into an enemy or wall is an instant game over. Enemies attack as well, and each hero has their own health meter and will die if it runs out. However, the enemies move in train formation just like the characters in your power-walk party, and if you're skilled enough, you can maneuver your loco-motion army in the way of marching enemies, causing them to collide into you and instantly die instead of killing anyone in your line of heroes. Ultimately, the goal in Nimble Quest is to get the highest personal score according to number of enemies killed and number of jewels acquired in a single session. An arena mode (that is presumably online multiplayer-centric) is available after reaching a certain point in single-player play, but all of my attempts to try it out resulted in an error stating that the server was not responding. I assume that means that the arena mode is offline and will no doubt stay that way, which is a shame. Thankfully, that's really the only place where this game disappoints (although backing out of certain menus can be a bit tricky, and the game currently doesn't remember if you've enabled full-screen mode and will always launch in windowed mode every time. These, however, are more minor nit-picks than actual issues that weigh against the game in any big way.) In conclusion, I'm quite happy that I bought Nimble Quest. It's a light-hearted yet quickly-paced good time, and I highly recommend this to players who enjoy retro-style action. It doesn't hurt that the soundtrack has some chiptune-esque bops on it, too. Anyone that used to love playing Snake on an old cell phone will probably want to look this title over as well.

Nimble Quest is a very nostalgic game for me, and when I learned it was on Steam I had to see if it was playable on the steam deck, and it was! It doesn't have any microtransactions, and is a great game for a backup whenever I've lost one too many runs in the Binding of Isaac or had Skyrim crash one too many times. I honestly rate this very highly as a purchase for the Steam Deck, as it controls very well and it being a mobile port feels at home on the Deck itself.

Could have been reformatted better for PC, but it was originally an app from ~15 years ago that was removed from the app store. Definitely fun to load it back up, would love to see more content created for it!

Fun, mindless little game to play when you don't want or need some involved story line. It's basically a snake game with moving obstacles that also attack you.

The appeal of this game is in the RPG aspect of leveling up to increase your hero abilities. However, once you max out all 16 heroes, there really is no point to the game anymore. Really fun up to that point and being able to achieve the "victory" of having all 16 heroes at 3-Star level.
