A really short horror experience but overall enjoyable. I may recommend grabbing it whenever it's on sale, but not a bad entry into Chilla's Art if you're looking for a small slice that's quick to beat and easy to digest... It was actually my first Chilla game, so it's good enough to make you a fan of Chilla's art style and direction, at the very least!

I'm back with reviews about Chilla's Art games, as I promised. "Okaeri" its a short and scary game, more about psychological horror than regular horror. Not everything about this kind of games is about fear and you will see that as soon as you play this game. Anyways this game touched some good topics, very similar to "The Night Way Home" (another great game by Chilla's Art). If you liked other games made by Chilla's Art you should definitely play this one. If u haven't played other games from Chilla's Art you should start with this one :)

Chilla's Art games are known primarily for their bite-sized horror games with a VHS filter and film grain. Okaeri is the first one they created in this specific format. It's eerie, creepy, short, and to the point. So short in fact, it can be finished in around 15 minutes and feels more like a proof of concept. This is why it has Mixed reviews. Buy it in a bundle with other Chilla's Art games.

A short story about a tragedy that occurs in the real world. A single simple puzzle to round it off is fairly nice.

Okaeri, another chapter in the Chilla's Art universe, is a very short horror game set around a tragic premise in a Japanese town. The tale of a middle school student and her mother who have recently moved into a new neighbourhood, in a house stuck in a small cul-de-sac location. One day, after returning from school, the student finds crows swirling above her house. Inside, she uncovers something more sinister. No trace of her mother, except very scary noises and paranormal phenomenons. All linked to frightening objects around the house; some linked to strange numbers written around the place. Numbers that reveal a horrifying secret; leading to serious consequences. As a game, Okaeri is one of Chilla's Art shortest productions. It can be played in less than an hour and the action is not as complicated, exigent, or as difficult as in their other games. In it, gamers explore the house and as they interact with certain objects by using the letter E, they try to find out what is going on: why is the mother's absent and why some strange paranormal incidents are occurring. Of these instances, they are never properly explained; unlike other Chilla's Art games which offered more detailed descriptions of what was going on. This time, the mystery is left open. And at certain moments you're never too sure if what happens to the mother is really linked to her or to a paranormal force inside the house. So as a whole the mystery is still unresolved. Either way, the final product is a fine horror video game. In its visuals, it follows their handheld DV video movie; something that reminded me of Lars von Trier's Riget or Koushun Takami's two Ju-On TV movies. Handheld DV videos that use filters that remind an old TV monitor from the 1990s. Of that visual effect, it is an option that people can either activate or deactivate. And like their other games, Okaeri is done in a first person point of view. As such, you follow the story under the eyes of the female student and explore the game's stages; modeled under 3D designs closer to the PlayStation 2 or Playstation 1 video games. But the strengths of the game, just like all those of Chilla's Art, are the story and the ambience; from the sound effects to the tension building up as we explore the house and the paranormal effects in the house. Some of them occurring off screen; or in front of us as one incident makes us wonder if the mother's problems are what caused the paranormal curses in the house. In sum, Chilla's Art's games are filled with subtle details, images, and horror elements that makes their games different from mainstream North American and Europeans horror video games. They are games that really make you realize how much potential there is indie video game developing and how Japanese developers have so much more creativity to big studios in North American and Europe. So if you want to enjoy a good video game, don't hesitate to play Okaeri. Consider it as a novella within the whole folklore of Chilla's Art.
