Only Up: With Friends is a multiplayer-focused parkour platformer developed and published by NoGlyph Games that takes the viral, punishing “only go up” climbing concept and reshapes it into a shared, competitive, and often chaotic experience. At its core, the game is about ascending a towering vertical environment filled with precarious platforms, awkward jumps, moving obstacles, and physics-driven interactions, where a single mistake can undo minutes or even hours of careful progress. Unlike its single-player inspirations, this version is explicitly designed around playing with others, transforming what could be a solitary test of patience into a social endurance trial full of tension, laughter, and occasional frustration. The gameplay loop is deceptively simple but demanding in execution. Players run, jump, and carefully maneuver their way upward, learning through repetition how momentum, spacing, and timing interact with the game’s physics. There are no checkpoints to soften the blow of failure, so falling is not just a setback but a defining feature of the experience. Every climb becomes a personal gamble between playing cautiously and risking bolder jumps to gain an advantage. This constant risk-reward calculation is what gives the game its addictive quality, as each successful maneuver feels genuinely earned, while every fall becomes a lesson in patience and restraint. What truly distinguishes Only Up: With Friends is how multiplayer fundamentally reshapes the tone and pacing of the game. Racing other players to the top introduces a competitive edge that heightens stress and excitement, especially when progress is measured not only against the environment but against human opponents who are just as prone to mistakes. Player collisions, accidental bumps, and unexpected interference can turn an otherwise controlled climb into sudden chaos, creating moments that are equal parts hilarious and infuriating. When played cooperatively with friends, the game often becomes less about winning and more about shared stories of near-misses, devastating falls, and improbable recoveries, making it particularly well-suited for group sessions, voice chat, and streaming. From a presentation standpoint, the game is functional rather than flashy. Visuals are clear enough to communicate hazards and platform placement, but they lack strong artistic identity or environmental storytelling. This minimalist approach does help keep the focus on readability and mechanical precision, which is crucial in a game where misjudging a jump by a few pixels can spell disaster. That said, the relatively plain environments can begin to feel repetitive over long sessions, and players looking for visual variety or thematic progression may find the climb less engaging over time. Sound design similarly plays a supporting role, reinforcing movement and impacts without becoming a defining feature of the experience. Technically, the game delivers a mixed impression. The physics-driven nature of the movement system is central to its appeal, but it can also be the source of frustration. Slight inconsistencies in collision detection, awkward character interactions, or unpredictable momentum can sometimes make failures feel arbitrary rather than deserved. In a game that already demands extreme precision and patience, these moments can undermine the sense of fairness that keeps players invested. While updates and patches have improved stability over time, the experience still feels rough around the edges, particularly for players approaching it with a competitive mindset. Overall, Only Up: With Friends succeeds most when it is embraced as a shared ordeal rather than a perfectly tuned skill test. Its strengths lie in the emotional highs and lows generated by risky climbs, sudden falls, and the unpredictable influence of other players. When enjoyed with the right expectations, it becomes a memorable social platformer that thrives on chaos, persistence, and the simple thrill of making it just a little bit higher than last time. However, players seeking a polished, technically airtight platforming experience may find its roughness and inconsistency difficult to overlook. It is a game that rewards tolerance for frustration, a sense of humor about failure, and a willingness to treat every fall not as defeat, but as part of the climb. Rating: 7/10
