Paranautical RNG Madness ! Paranautical Activity is a not so bad FPS/Roguelike hybrid from 2013. This game combines the classic FPS formula from the 90s with some difficulty and total randomness of more modern rogulikes to a rather mixed but still somewhat decent results. Did i have fun with this game ? Yes , i did. Was it frustrating most of the time ? Yes , it was. Did i like the game overall ? Yes , i did. So lets start with the positives , shall we ? The core gameplay in this game is really good and somewhat addicting especially for the lovers of the older FPS games (Doom , Quake , Blood etc.). Right out of the gate (or in our case - out of the elevator) you feel like you're home. The main aesthetic and graphics looks like modernised versions of your beloved 90s shooter. Same with movements , weapons and all other stuff - quick jumps , dashes , sound effects. Of course it doesn't look EXACTLY like shooters of the past but the style is definitely here. The game has 6 characters/heroes in total + secret Mystery Man. All of them have their own playstyle , stats and weapons. Tank , for example , is a slow character but has a lot of health right from the get go + some powerful weapons. David Bowie starts with some low health and a terrible starting weapon but moves a bit faster. Gilead on the other hand is a well rounded character and so on. Even the worst characters have their own little advantages and you can beat the game with all of them after some time and practice. The game has two modes (+ Infinite Mode which you can't unlock for some reason) - Classic and Hardcore. Classic Mode consists of 7 floors and Hardcore Mode of 8 floors (8th floor is a Boss/Mini-Boss floor. It's HELL). Every floor has Boss , Miniboss , Trap Room , Shop , Armory. Hardcore Mode adds "Casino" Room. Also in Hardcore Mode an annoying Ghost will hunt you if you can't clear the floor in under 4 minutes. He will spawn near the elevator and will fly through walls shooting projectiles at you. You can kill him only after you kill the final boss (drops an important item to do it). Very annoying fella ! There are A LOT of items and a few powerups in the game. Not all of them are useful - some are completely worthless like Doxy which will change the voice you make when you take damage. On the other hand items like Dingy (dicreases the floor size) or Compass (will show you the entire floor on the mini-map) or Davy Jone's Locker (gives health and shields + upgrade to all stats) are great and will help you tremendously on your run. Powerups like Ankh (invincibility) , Assault (doubles damage and fire rate) and Golden Heart (refills your health to the max) will also come in handy. The biggest negative and the biggest enemy in this game is not a particular monster (although moths and monkeys (?) are extremely annoying) or Boss/Mini-Boss. You can beat them all after some time. The biggest problem is the RNG. It's HORRENDOUS. I had really good runs or even perfect runs where i had almost every item (the good ones) and was so overpowered i killed almost every enemy and every Boss with just 3-4 hits. But i also had really bad runs with almost ZERO useful items and nonexistent powerups. It was really good or really bad and no in between. That was so frustrating ! I have so many hours in this game partially 'cause RNG wasn't my friend for most of the game ! I talked about aesthetic and graphics earlier and how good it looks for such an old game but it also runs great and i had only 1 crash during my 132 hour journey. A lot of people compliment music in this game and i agree with them to an extent : after so many hours i was tired of it but the music itself is great - it keeps you going , it's kickass and bombastic - perfect for this type of game ! Just a couple of words about the cheevos : most of them are REALLY hard and challenging but also doable. After some time with this game you'll unlock all of them with almost zero problems. Just concentrate on the game and the characters and the mechanics first. So , will i recommend this game to annyone ? Yes , if you like FPS/Roguelike hybrids with fluid gameplay or if you want some spin on your favourite 90s shooter. But No , if you don't like RNG shenanigans and spending a lot more time perfecting your skills and learning different characters/mechanics. Paranautical Activity is also super cheap during sales so you can grab it if you want and see for yourself. Good luck ! P.S. Ghost Will Haunt Your Dreams !

If you want a reasonably fast pace, just jump around shooter, then this is a great game. A lot of the negative reviews seem to be looking at it in comparison with other games, but in which case - why play anything thats not Triple A? Its a great, little, cheap and simple game. I jump in largely just for some stress relief and for something fun to burn some time on. Simple.
