persona 5 doesn't even come close to how good persona 4 is. the only problem is maybe the gameplay gets repetitive at times, but even then its not that big of a deal for me. great story, but what makes this game stand out for me are the characters, their personalities, and their dialogue. its SO GOOD. also, you can tell that this game was made with passion and the devs really enjoyed making this game, thats how I felt anyways.

One of the best RPGs of all time. If you’re new to the Persona series, I recommend you start with Persona 5 Royale. The stylishness of that game, along with its epic themes and improvements to gameplay mechanics makes it better for newcomers. But, if you’ve played P5R and loved it, don’t be put off by this game’s dated PS2 graphics. The story is very different in style and tone, but in many ways even better than P5R. The turn based combat also remains excellent.

Before this game, I played the following Atlus games: Catherine Classic, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Persona 3 Reload. Notice how visually stunning and fancy all these games are? But despite the artistic excellence of all these games, I can dare say with confidence that Persona 4 Golden is the greatest of all Atlus games I played, primarily due to its excellence in writing. I had always been obsessed with writing in creative works, and this game provided me with a conclusive proof that writing is indeed the most important element in any form of creative work involving storytelling. You can invest all your resources into stunning visuals, but it would take only a few years, or even a few months until your 'stunning' visuals are outmatched by another brand-new work in the market. However, an excellent writing can easily make your work into a timeless classic, that can still compete in the market down the road against generations of new works. Persona 4 Golden is the first game that proved to me that this principle can apply to not only literature but also video games, which typically have far shorter lifespan in the market. Persona 4 Golden's main theme is rigorous pursuit of truth in rejection of willful ignorance, convenient lies, and self-centered fantasies, all of which are metaphorically represented by the fog surrounding the protagonist and his village. This theme manifests not only in the main storyline, but also in the side stories of characters who are not directly involved with the protagonist's investigation activity. Every one of them faces a situation where they are either stuck in or tempted to accept false narratives that either they themselves created or other people forced onto them. Our main cast, the Investigation Team members, also go through this process a bit more extensively and experience identity crisis where they are forced to question their own senses of identity. The protagonist is also no exception. Although he is more or less a typical blank sheet character designed for player immersion, he is repeatedly presented with big choices he has to make, whether to resort to willful ignorance, or to keep pursuing truth despite discomfort. Given how post-truth politics flourishes in this modern day and age and constantly wrecks every sense of long-term stability for the sake of short-term gratification, Persona 4 Golden's lesson can't be more relevant to us. What's more, interestingly, this game's true final boss explicitly states that his actions were motivated and legitimized by the vast majority of humanity that prefers willful ignorance to verifiable truth, which makes this whole game into a cautionary tale against mob rule. It's academically interesting how a Japanese video game translated the sophisticated theories of ancient Greek philosophers into a child-friendly argument for the need of constant vigilance against democracy decaying into mob rule, which is exactly the reason why prominent ancient Greek philosophers openly opposed the very idea of democracy during their time despite its merits. In that sense, the true final boss's underlings can also be interpreted as the perfect examples of how willful ignorance and compromised integrity can make you evil, whether you meant it or not. Seriously, it's unbelievable how this game was created two decades ago in Japan and points its finger with bone-chilling accuracy at the sociocultural problems rampaging our modern day society both worldwide and in USA. Truly a timeless classic that cannot be ever more relevant to us now, Persona 4 Golden also highlights how unwavering pursuit of truth enables you to build stronger connection with your neighbors and friends. This is done by juxtaposing how the protagonist's Investigation Team shares ironclad friendship and how those who chose to indulge in willful ignorance and compromised integrity are always walking on eggshells, and sometimes destroy the genuine connections they were lucky to have with their own hands. This message is even more clear when you consider how even the Investigation Team's friendship gets challenged if the protagonist chooses willful ignorance over uncomfortable truth when given the choice. The more you look into this game's narrative structure, the more lessons you find on how rigorous pursuit of truth leads to robust connections, lasting fulfillment, and genuine happiness. The fact that this is done in simple vocabularies typical of Shonen manga is arguably the epitome of the literary adage: "Show, don't tell." Who would have imagined that Shonen manga vocabs are all it would take to teach the lessons on truth that countless philosophers wrote books about over centuries? The more you know of this game, the more impressive it gets. I'm fully convinced after a playthrough that this game, Persona 4 Golden, is indeed one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Atlus games. I have not played Persona 5 yet, so this might be too early to make a conclusive statement, but I did hear repeatedly from others that Persona 4 is the greatest of the Persona franchise despite its outdated graphics. Now I know why. I have no objection to that evaluation. At the very least, this game's writing was way better than that of Metaphor: ReFantazio, which is the latest Atlus game in the market; it was visually impressive, but the story had very noticeable plot holes here and there and sometimes did not make sense at all by my standard. However, although Persona 4 Golden also has some plot holes, their influence on the storyline is very limited and well-controlled. So the damage is very minimal and negligible, whereas the plot errors in Metaphor: ReFantazio were practically not controlled at all. I heard that a remake is scheduled for release for this game. The title is Persona 4 Revival. Now that I know the greatness of Persona 4, I am very excited to see how the remake will turn out. The only problems with Persona 4 Golden were its outdated graphics, and inconvenient UI. I hope the remake will improve those aspects of the game just like they did in Persona 3 Reload. However, I do also have concerns about the remake, because of how relevant Persona 4 Golden's main theme and moral lessons are to modern-day post-truth politics. I'm seriously hoping for the developers to do their best to preserve the original storyline, not compromising it in the fear of consequences, just like the protagonist and his Investigation Team did in the game. It'd be indescribably tragic if this masterpiece's lessons were diluted beyond recognition because the developers made a choice that the in-game villains did and refused to honor the lessons embodied by the protagonist and his friends. As you see me being equal parts concerned and excited about the upcoming remake, Persona 4 Golden is a very inspiring piece of art that provokes a lot of thoughts. If its outdated graphics is the only thing that holds you back from purchasing, then I can confidently tell you to forget it and just try. You will be rewarded with matchless storytelling. I am obsessed with all kinds of narrative writing and therefore read quite a lot of stories of many different genres on regular basis, whether it is in the form of books or video games, but I have not experienced this level of storytelling in any time that I can remember, and this game was created in 2012, while Persona 4 was released in 2008. If that does not convince you, I don't know what can. I recommend this game with full confidence AND conviction to anyone doubting this game's greatness.

With Persona 3 having the strongest story, and Persona 5 being a technical triumphant among JRPGs, Persona 4 might be the game among the three that has the most heart. For me, it's hard not to love the residents of Inaba. Between jumping into the TV and beating down shadows and fusing personas, getting to kick it with your basketball buddies or chill with the local shrines fox feels so weird that it's enthralling. It's a slice of life drama that breaks into fights for the lives of your friends, and I wouldn't have it any other way
