Data Realms have created an advanced and refreshing 2D game/physics engine. However, like Cortex Command, this game is but a shallow tech demo. It sports cutting edge and impressive 2D physics that make the mouth water. What it lacks is the very quality (or should I say quantity) that would categorize this as a game: gameplay and content.

TL;DR worth it?: for fans of cortex command and anyone who wants to make levels/guns yeah sure! but for more casual gamers who just want a game experince im not sure, you may wish to hold off for more content(or get it now, and enjoy the content as it comes) i have extremely mixed feelings on this game, but in the end i think its a good game and absolutly worth a look if the idea of creating levels, guns, and actors appeals to you. theres not much i can really say that reviews like nameless's havent said (i partialy agree with his criticism of the game, not so much of the dev stuff) , but i beleive in the potential for this game. as of right now, you only get about an 8 hour main game and a handful of minigames, thats not very much i will agree. but the fact that the tools people would need to make any of these levels are available to everyone means that once content creators get into it there will be many more levels to play. but of course, the potential for content down the line does not excuse how little is in the base game because what if, gaben forbid, it fails to take off or get a solid group of creators? not to mention people like me who cant code/draw and can only make the most rudimentary use of the editor getting to the end of the current content and going "thats all?" and suddenly the wind is taken from my sails. but, like i said, i believe in the potential here as the base itself is very solid and super fun, as the time i had on primoid can attest to. once the devs finish up the "todo" planets in the system and add some more big planets(as they have mentioned they plan to) and the community gains steam the game will be in a much better state.

The good, the bad, the ugly. First of all this is not a Cortex Command like game. Nor it's Cortex Comand sucessor. This game has Cortex Command like engine and physics. The biggest difference is environments are not destructable. You can only destruct actors, robots, vechicles and limited objects placed in the environment. This game was definitely designed with multiplayer in mind and probably(likely) console release. So.. This is metroidvania-like game where you explore asteroids a size of a little planet. Or a little planets that float in asteroid-like manner. E.g. Planetoids. Planes are not diggable or destructable, but sometimes you can dig through the pile of objects/blocks or open doors. You still can mess with Cortex Command like wierd physics and destruction along the way. Most of obstacles build around that. There are new and different things compared to Cortex Command: [*]You have and control only one body at a time. There are no AI controlled bodies you can switch between. [*]There is reincarnation theme instead. You can place sealed containers with bodies around the map to inhabit nearest after your death. [*]There are no credits in this game. It has 5 types or resources instead. You loose most of your resources once you leave the body and they would scatter around it in blocks. [*]You have two atomiser devices build in into your right and left hand. Right hand has one to collect resources out of objects/dead bodies. Left hand has one to build things with blueprints you learn from dissolving objects or in the blueprint boxes around the map. [*]After you ressurect reincarnation theme continues. You break out of sealed container and then can dissolve it to get some resources(placenta reference). You also dissolve your previous body and inherit tools/resources left from it. [*]Actors don't have jet packs, so now we left to crawl most of the time. [*]There are vehicles and robots you can mount with you actor. Also I should mention graphics and art. Graphics look up to date with better lightning and smoke effects. Art is similar to cortex command, good and solid. There are minor things that can be improved, like adding more visual effects, making flashlight light more vivid, alive. But overall well done. Those who liked Cortex Command visuals will enjoy Planetoid Pioneers even more. Main theme of the game is your character's ship crashed and rescue pod dropped you on one of planetoids, the goal is to travel around planetoid to find blueprint and materials for the ship to get out of the planet. There are also number of planetoids with different game modes like survival/racing/defence. The current state of the game: There is mostly finished engine and developing tools. It has some minor/major bugs like current problems with safe system. Save system bug is quite annoying if you want to play the game now. Because not only you can loose your character/progress, map is not saving at the moment. Meaning it will reload in original state when you load your game and you can be locked behind doors without ability to open them. The only way to get behind this doors now is to have Contributors Edition and cheat your actor behind those doors. Since it's content oriented game unlike Cortex Command, beta state is different. Game itself is on early stages, where developers experimenting/building content prototypes. There is one big almost finished planetoid with exploration content. Which is IMO quite boring in terms of gameplay. There are number of other planetoids with prototypes of other game modes/mechanics. That's basically it. Will I recommend this game for those who want to play now? No. But it has potential to be interesting and even big hit like Terraria/Starbound if developers make good, fun and interesting content for it. If you want to mess with the game and engine, there is probably around 20 hours worth of content and it's quite autistic at this point. Summary: I'll give this game thumbs up only for game engine, visuals and aestetics. For it's good potential to be good game if developers deliver fun and interesting content. Now it's a more of tech demo/prototype. Should you invest in this game, if you love Data Realms games? It's a debatable thing. On one hand developers tend to abandon their projects for years/living them in unfinished state, dropping support. That's what they've got beating from the community. On the other hand through all those years they keep on returning and improving their games. So in the end, you can if you wish to. But ti's up to you, since there are no guarantee.

I hesitated to purchase the game-only addition, and now I am considering getting hte contributer addition. This game is a LOT of fun! I have been playing coop with my son, and I'm not sure we have ever laughed so hard while playing a video game together. That alone was worth the price of admission! Me and my son love Cortex Command, as quirky and difficult a game as it is. Planetoid Pioneer shares some of those same idiosyncrasies which is what makes the game outstanding among a sea of otherwise cookie-cutter video games. While we don't have a lot of time in the game we are looking forward to spend many more hours exploring, getting in each other's way, and shooting undead skeletons and other creatures through the head! For $10 you can't go wrong - bugs and all. The developer is great and active on the Steam forums! $10? Don't be a fool! Spend it!

WARNING Do not buy this game unless you are financially independent or own your own business or have access to your mom's credit card. It is worth approx $1.99 in its current skeleton state. This product is barely in pre-production Alpha stage. WARNING Planetoid Pioneers is not a game in its current state it is not even a demo it is more of a Showcase of what can be done in the future and has very limited liability and almost no content. With that said, the game is beautiful and I have high hopes for its future if the developer and the community can unite and build a wonderful game together a game that is what Cortex Command should have been. I cannot write a negative review of this game because you are clearly warned in the intro video not to buy this game therefore I must give a positive review using forward-thinking and hoping that this game will eventually become good, I pray to God that it will one day be finished, unlike its predecessor, Cortex Command. You may wonder why does my review not contain specific information about the gameplay well the reason is there is literally so little content that I have nothing to say because there is almost nothing there. WARNING Do not buy this game unless it is two to three years from now and you're reading this review and the game is actually completed.
