What I expected: - A version of the original game with a new coat of paint, better controller support, compatibility, etc. What I got: - Exactly what was in the above category - Fish - A brand spanking new campaign with new enemy types, enemy formations, weapons and more - Fish - New player ship types - Fish - Endless mode - Fish - A game that, all in all, proves that people can still pour their heart and soul into things to make something wonderful - Fish - Fish - More Fish

it's so weird to boot up Platypus in 2025 and have it ask if I want to play in 4k, lol For those who don't know, this is a remake of Anthony Flack's claymation shmup from 2002, by the same man behind the original game (and there's a long and fascinating history behind that game's wild development process, aftermath, and out-of-nowhere revival - lots of interesting podcasts, interviews, and articles out there on the net about it). It's one of those games that got played by a looooot of people despite not being particularly well-known then or now - the short of thing that consistently made it to the front page of those 2000's $5 online casual gaming stores that are today but a relic of a bygone era. Reclayed is a very good remake that truly understands the assignment of what a remaster should aim to do - aside from running like a dream on modern systems, it features a ton of new content (new enemies/weapons, bonus level, harder difficulties, new gamemodes). But in addition to being very faithful to the first game to begin with, it also additionally features an effectively unaltered recreation of the original in the new engine, complete with squished aspect ratio and low-rez pixel claymation. Speaking of the claymation, the game looks great and definitely unlike anything else you've played before. Everything is made of real hand-animated claymation, and is painstakingly replicated from the first game. It's a fantastic artstyle. Difficulty is good. There are multiple settings, from Easy (which is quite easy and can be played with a child) to "Nasty" (which is utterly brutal and designed for hardcore shmup veterans) and everything in-between. It has a great sense of variety and challenge - you'll never feel bored by the next wave being repetitive, and the game is fair but unforgiving. It expects you to replay and memorise it a lot, just like the original did - a single run of all the levels will take you only about two hours at most, but there's hours of content here. There's even some endless modes where you can see how far you can get on a certain level with a single life. It also has some pretty in-depth official mod support, and pretty much anything can be added or changed. There's absolutely no reason a 2002 shmup as obscure as this needed to get such a careful and loving remaster (and the more you learn about the original, the more it defies all odds that this remake even exists to begin with) but they really knocked it out of the park. It's just a blast, whether you grew up on the first game or have never touched it. It's well worth the asking price, and if I asked the child I was when I first played the original to dream up what I'd want a remake of it to have, I still think it'd be only half as cool as what Claymatic have actually managed here. I wish other games got remastered with a fraction of the care shown here, and I'd recommend this title happily to pretty much anyone who plays video games. (also the soundtrack absolutely BOPS like you wouldn't believe)

I played the original Platypus as a kid, and seeing it remastered as Platypus Replayed feels like rediscovering an old toy box. The claymation style is still as quirky and charming as ever, and the updated visuals and smoother controls make it feel fresh without losing its unique soul. All of the ships and figures were handmade with clay. This game has an amazing atmosphere and in this dead era it is really hard to see a game with a soul. It’s simple, colorful, and just as fun as I remember. My memories resurfaced. I salute the nostalgia! :)
