April 2026
River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~, developed by Arc System Works and published by H2 Interactive Co., Ltd., is a deliberately chaotic blend of sports competition and side-scrolling brawler action that fully embraces the eccentric spirit of the long-running Kunio-kun series. Rather than treating sports as structured contests governed by rules and precision, the game turns every event into a playground for disruption, where punching opponents, throwing objects, and sabotaging rivals are just as important as actually completing the objective. It’s a design that feels intentionally unruly, prioritizing unpredictability and humor over balance or realism. The game is built around a set of unconventional sporting events, including obstacle races, cross-country runs, climbing challenges, and all-out brawls. While each event has its own basic objective, the way you achieve victory is far from straightforward. Success often comes from exploiting the game’s combat mechanics—knocking opponents down, using environmental hazards to your advantage, or simply slowing everyone else down long enough to secure a win. This creates a unique dynamic where traditional racing or athletic skill takes a backseat to opportunistic aggression. The scoring system reinforces this, rewarding not only performance in the event but also combat effectiveness, which can lead to surprising outcomes where the most disruptive player comes out on top. Moment-to-moment gameplay is energetic and often unpredictable. Matches are filled with sudden reversals, unexpected hits, and chaotic interactions that keep things lively, especially in multiplayer sessions. There’s a certain appeal in the sheer absurdity of it all—watching competitors scramble through obstacles while simultaneously engaging in fights gives the game a personality that stands apart from more conventional sports titles. At the same time, the simplicity of the controls means that much of the action revolves around a limited set of moves, which can begin to feel repetitive after extended play. Visually, the game leans heavily into its retro roots while incorporating modern elements. Character sprites retain their classic pixel-art style, full of exaggerated expressions and animations, while the environments are rendered in a more contemporary 3D format. This combination creates a distinctive look that bridges old and new, reinforcing the game’s nostalgic appeal without feeling entirely outdated. The overall presentation is colorful and expressive, with a tone that matches the game’s chaotic and comedic nature. The soundtrack, featuring energetic and upbeat tracks, complements the action well and adds to the sense of playful intensity. The inclusion of a story mode adds a layer of context to the events, though it is more about personality than narrative depth. The storyline revolves around rival schools and exaggerated competitions, filled with over-the-top characters and dramatic confrontations that are clearly meant to be humorous rather than serious. While the writing helps give the game some structure, it doesn’t significantly enhance the gameplay, and certain translation quirks can occasionally make dialogue feel awkward or unclear. Customization and progression systems provide some additional motivation to keep playing. Players can create characters, unlock teams, and experiment with different abilities, adding a light layer of personalization to the experience. However, these systems are relatively shallow and don’t drastically change how the game plays. Most of the enjoyment still comes from the core events themselves, and once you’ve experienced the available modes, there is limited new content to discover. The game’s biggest challenge is its longevity. While the concept is entertaining, it doesn’t evolve much over time. The small number of event types and the repetitive nature of the mechanics mean that the experience can start to feel familiar fairly quickly. Multiplayer helps extend its lifespan, as the unpredictability of human opponents adds variety, but this depends heavily on having others to play with. Without that social element, the game’s appeal can diminish more rapidly. Ultimately, River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~ is a game that thrives on its personality and willingness to break the rules of traditional sports games. It offers a chaotic, often hilarious experience that captures the essence of the Kunio-kun series, even if it lacks the depth and refinement to sustain long-term engagement. For players who enjoy retro-inspired games and don’t mind a bit of disorder in their competition, it provides a fun and memorable diversion, particularly in short sessions or with friends. River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~ is a chaotic, retro-style sports brawler that revives Kunio-kun's legacy. This game really shines as a "party brawler," supporting up to 4 players locally or online. Whether you're running the obstacle course or playing battle royale, the ability to punch, kick, and use weapons against your opponents during sports makes for hilarious, high-energy competition with friends. The "Edit Mode", which allows you to create your own characters and teams, with over 25 teams and 100+ characters to unlock, is really good, kinda reminds of Worms. There is a surprising amount of single-player progression and nostalgic fanservice for longtime followers of the franchise. The only thing that I didn't like in this game is its prebuilt/predefined controls—you can't change control keys to your liking, which honestly makes the game really uncomfortable to play at times. And the game doesn't even warn or tell you which keys are for what. I am sure everyone who started this game for the first time had to smash their keyboards just to proceed to the main menu. However in general, as a big of River City Girls fan I recommend this game, it still has its charm.
