Would recommend to anyone who enjoys trains or sandbox type world building. A shining example that shows something doesn't need to be complex or hyper-detailed to be good. The only limit to what you can create is your own imagination, and there is truly something for just about everyone in this game. Whether you want to build the model railroad layout of your dreams, a small loop just to run trains around, a small diorama of a particular location, or recreate an entire subdivision of your favorite IRL railroad...you can do it all. While the game's main style is a bit more "cartoon-ish," you can still make more "realistic" items/worlds if you take your time and explore/experiment with different techniques for building your world. Not interested too much in trains? No problem! You can still build just about whatever you want: whether it be a replica of Times Square in NYC, a pirate ship battle on the high seas, or anything and everything in between. Modding is easy, and the Steam Workshop has THOUSANDS of items ready to download, all for free. Everything from buildings and scenery objects, to locomotives and rail cars of all kinds, and don't forget about the maps and layouts that all the other players have created. To me this is the biggest advantage Rolling Line has over other train simulator games: all the downloadable content is completely free, so you only have to pay for the base game and you can expand your library of available items at any time with no hassle. The developer is active with the community and genuinely cares about the game and it's players, with many of the in-game competition themes and certain in-game content being directly voted on or influenced by the playerbase. While I don't personally play VR, I've been told by others that the VR version of this game is fun and/or interesting. Overall, this is a fun sandbox/simulator with near limitless potential. Whether your interest is is trains or world building, you're bound to find something that interests you.

This is seriously one of the most well made video games out there! It’s so incredibly fun and has endless possibilities for building whatever you imagine. While it may appear as a model train game, it’s really open to making whatever worlds you can think of. That’s what it really is: A worldbuilding game. Build whole cities, wild west towns, bridges across giant ravines, a highway across an open plain, a gigantic steel mill or a tiny mining site. Link it all together with the automation circuits and make an adventure map! Add in industries to deliver cargo to and from! Build a massive train yard and spend hours switching freight around! I can not say it enough: There is no end to what you can do in this game. The community is amazing too. There are literally thousands of player-made custom trains, props, and other doohickies on the workshop for you to mess with if the in-game items aren’t to your satisfaction. The people are all quite friendly, and you can always get help and advice from the discord members. The game’s solo developer, Franks, is also seriously one of the best game devs out there. He keeps this game regularly updated with new content and bug fixes, all in amazing quality. He communicates with the community so well and tells us about everything that is going on behind the scenes. He just released a major new map AHEAD of schedule! I could never manage to praise this guy and the amazing game he has created highly enough. I personally guarantee a positive experience with this game, especially including its development and community.

although the basegame is lacking in some props and types of trains, it overwhelmingly makes up with the massive modding scene, its fit to model any era and pretty much any country, I highly recommend this game, its simplistic yet charming graphics make it a original, and unique take on the sandbox genre.

Pretty good! The learning curve into making layouts is steep, but not as steep as something like blender. It's like trying to get into carpentry. The community creations are awesome and add a quality of life to this game. Also trains, don't forget about the trains.

Rolling Line, like a growing number of games these days, understands the futility of endlessly chasing photorealistic graphics, and opts for a simpler art style to be more whimsical and improve performance. But while so many games that take this path end up with something nowhere near being a simulator, Rolling Line still accurately models specific locomotives with a keen eye to various details non-railfans easily miss. Like the low-fidelity model trains of a local hobby store, they're not stunningly accurate but they get the right impression across.
