Overall, it's a nice game, and it looks very pretty. But at the time of writing, it's also quite short. + pros : • Very pretty • The Quizz mode makes it very fun to learn all the words in the game. • The Quizz mode has a timer, so you can challenge yourself by speedrunning the quizz. - cons : • Very short. At the time of writing, the game only counts 145 words . Hopefully the devs expand on that. Having about 1000 words would be really good, but multiplying the current word count by 7 is a tall order. Maybe allowing modding to allow the japanese learning community to expand on the game would work ?

It's a cute game but I had been hoping that there are plans to expand the game, since as it is right now, does not feel like a complete experience. It's a very small sandbox, which, while beautiful, will still feel very 狭い after a short time. If you're already learning Japanese, it's a cute game to help you cement a few hundred words in total, and a very easy 100% completion if you're someone that likes doing that. tl;dr - nice game to augment pre-existing efforts when learning the language, but I wish it was bigger.

As someone who has studied Japanese for 8 years, it is quite an interesting game to learn Japanese with. - It has great graphics and a standard pronounciation (which is good). - The Flip card technique is also a good tool to learn words. - The game contains a lot of basic words that you could hear everyday in Japan. - The only thing that I am missing is a more in-depth Kanji explanation. One of the first things that made it easier for me to read Japanese was to understand what the kanji mean in a word. Like an easy one 火山 (Kazan - Mountain) is made from Fire 火 and Mountain 山. From there you can learn 氷山 (Hyouzan - Iceberg). Mostly I am looking forward how they can expand on the concept and make it even better.

After 10 hours of playing I have "mastered" all photographable words. What does this actually mean? Within the context of the game, I can identify them correctly, usually immediately, on the first try. The "Find" mini game seems really effective at building this skill. Out of this context / In the wild (such as listening to media), I could probably recognize most of them but not all - I'd need more studying for that. Personally, I limited myself to about 10 new words per session, a bit more if some were English loan words or something I already knew. I think rushing to photograph all the words is a mistake. Also, while I can recognize the words in context easily, this doesn't mean I can recall all of them from memory unprompted. If I keep doing the Find game I probably could eventually, but I think the game would benefit from a mini-game that requires you to recall the objects without reading or hearing the words (like showing your picture and asking you to type in the correct word) to help study them. Besides the photo words, there is more to do. The game has a bunch of adjectives, verbs and other words you can study through a mini game. I haven't spent too much time with that yet but I probably will now that I'm mostly good with the nouns. There are some basic written lessons. I would recommend learning Katakana/Hiragana before playing. The game has character charts, but no real tools or lessons to actually practice or learn. I learned them from Tofugu in a day, and then spent some time converting words and phrases into Romaji on various websites until I could reliably (albeit slowly) read. The signs and various writing in the world also seems like good reading practice. I've also become able to recognize at least a few of the simpler kanji without any dedicated practice. The game runs well for me, the graphics/music/sounds are all charming so you can enjoy your time learning. What could be improved? Nothing major but I'd like to see: A way to practice characters. A way to practice recalling words totally on your own without reading or hearing them. A way to search words in your book (and their associated verbs, etc). A way to tag words so you can more easily practice custom groups? Ie. Food Items, Personal Belongings. More duplicate objects to minimize running across the entire map. Maybe different FOV camera lenses? A tiny gripe is waiting for certain objects like a plane to fly overhead, and waiting for the weather or time of day to change. Long story short, if you take it slow and put in proper effort, you can probably learn a decent number of words this way - but try to come with at least a basic level of character reading skill if you want to make the most of it. Could you learn everything here for free using an Anki deck? Sure, I guess, but this is definitely more enjoyable and will probably help keep you motivated when used alongside your other resources. I'd love to see DLC with a different locations and new words to learn eventually, but I still have work to do in the base game until then.
