If you are interested in this game, please be aware that it deals with themes of child abuse and strongly implied child sexual abuse/exploitation. Also, while there are no spiders in this game, anyone who is scared of/grossed out by centipedes and insects might not want to play this game. If you're a fan of games like American McGee's Alice/Alice: Madness Returns, Sorry We're Closed, and/or anything by Harvester Games, but also wanted the thrill of killing demons to rock music like in Doom, this is the game for you. Silly Polly Beast follows the titular character as she must face her personal demons (both physical and metaphorical) in a strange, surreal world that darkly reflects her own. In between shooting and hitting demons in the face, players are left to wonder how much of the game is real and how much is inside Polly's head, and if the Abyss is something that should be escaped from or embraced. It's a short game, but it has a gripping story, stylish graphics, a kickass soundtrack (please put it on Spotify!), and some really awesome boss fights that make it worth it. My only two criticisms are the weapon select and the New Game+ mode. While the game has four weapons (a demonic revolver, a shotgun, an assault rifle, and a stake gun), Polly can only carry two at a time, and she CANNOT swap the revolver out no matter what. The revolver is the weakest weapon and also the most cumbersome to reload (you need to be either near certain barrels that let you reload, or successfully kill an enemy). It would've been nice if you were able to have all four weapons with you at all times, and for the revolver to be easier to reload. As for New Game+ mode...it's not actually NG+. It's just replaying the game from scratch, but with a different camera angle. There's currently no NG+ that lets you keep the costumes and upgrades from a previous playthrough, which is disappointing. Hopefully that will be resolved at a later point. Aside from that, this game felt tailor made for me and I enjoyed playing it immensely. If the warnings and criticisms I gave above aren't an issue for you, I cannot recommend this game enough. Major kudos to Andrei Chernyshov for making a solo developer game THIS good, and I'm excited to see what he makes next.

There's a few points I want to make before my actual review: 1. I want more people to love this masterpiece and there's a lot of complaints about not being able to try the third person from the start, there is a (sort of) secret way to do this that people may have missed: In the phone on the main menu, go to Settings and click the button with 5 question marks (?????) five times to unlock 3rd person (Called NG+ on this game). I personally recommend you trying the cinematic normal camera for the first playthrough; this game leaves you wanting more and to experience it again with third person is incredible. Props to the dev for doing this on what is already a successful game! 2. I saw someone complain about "5 hours of gameplay for $20". Is this where we're at? I can get a Jimmy Johns sandwich for $15 that lasts about 10 minutes. This developer has put together something that has more heart in this one game than anything EA has touched in a decade. People used to spend more than this on a movie ticket that lasted 1 1/2 hours. The main story may take about 5 hours but if you're a completionist or even just want to replay and try the different camera/get more of the story from a perspective after finishing the game, you add tons of replayability & time. Clowns like this are the type to spend the money on ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ avocado toast or coffee then complain about an Indie Dev selling the game for the efforts they've put in. So if that's you, then throw this in your wishlist, put on your clown nose and then wait for a sale. But I assure you this game is totally worth the full price. 3. It is a phenomenal game albeit very difficult. There is nothing locked behind the hard mode for the achievements so definitely feel free to try easy mode up front. I do wish it came with a 'cheat mode' unlock for infinite ammo in NG+ (Would make this perfect and more accessible for those who struggle or prefer a 'story mode'!!), maybe the Dev will see this! It has a deep rooted darkness and sadness to its atmosphere, akin to Shin Ten games but with a touch of Alice Madness Returns. I love the characters, the story grabs you and urges you to press forward for redemption but leaves many choices up to you. If you like this I highly recommend Withering Rooms too and if you're already a fan of Withering Rooms then there's only one reason you wouldn't buy this and that is if you are missing a chunk of your prefrontal cortex. Please give this game a chance, I would love to see what the Dev can cook up next and honestly wish I had more of this gem to continue absorbing.

This is my favorite game of the year. Such a nice variation on most of the games that i have played in a long time. Good story, good atmosphere, good characters, good gameplay, good level design and fun bosses. The only downside is not much replayability after the first play through other than achievements you missed. 9/10 Even though i 100% the game i will probably play it again soon for a third time just for the atmosphere and gameplay.

What's mind-blowing about this game is that it was made by one person, programming, art, et al. The gameplay is good, the story is both motivating and intriguing but even beyond that it's really the presentation and mood here that shines the most. It's Parasite Eve x Signalis and perhaps a little more action-y than both of those titles. This game was made with talent and love and it's clear in every facet of the whole product. Can't wait to see what Andrei does next! 8/10, some balance issues and extreme difficulty hold it back from perfection! : )
