Shame a game like this with so many aspects of exploration in space and on planets doesn't get remakes or sequels. Though to be fair, there are quite a lot of top down space games with some of the features this has (minus the planetary stuff).

My childhood favorite, still holds up pretty well! Especially the text adventures :) Not really, but sort of a spiritual successor to this is Starsector, which i also cant recommend enough

I've played this a lot. Many times. So many times... I always think about playing it again before leaving a review, but I never do. It's because if I do, I won't play other things. And I have a lot of things to play. It's an older title, and it certainly shows its age. But you know what? It's an amazing game. I long for a true sequel to the Space Rangers series.

Space Rangers is something I played a long time ago, but second game was more to my liking due to a number of reasons... including presence of missile weapons ^^'. Space Rangers HD: A War Apart is definitive edition for Space Rangers 2 which includes whole new main storyline and a bunch of improvements. So, in its core game is turn based space rpg - you play as space ranger with ultimate goal of ending sentient robotic lifeforms aggression against Coalition of 5 races, which include humans. Additional primary goal is ending pirates organisation, or joining them. Game has several possible endings, though because of the age they are not as varied as modern rpgs that have multiple endings. Space Rangers does not take itself seriously and has humorous remarks, quests and names everywhere, though you'd have to be knowledgeable of russian\cis specific old memes and stuff to appreciate lots of them. Actually it might be possible to name all activities to do in game - trading, questing, text adventures, planet exploration (you just leave probes there), fighting pirates\dominators (robotic enemies)\civilians\military, robbing other ships, exploring black holes, real time arcade spaceship fights in black holes\hyperjumps, defending\conquering space systems for pirates\coalition and doing robot combat. As mentioned before - mostly it'd be turn based rpg, exceptions are arcade ship battles that'd give you different types of projectiles depending on what weapons you have on your ship (so best weapons for turn based fights are almost never best suited for arcade), and robot battles on planets. Planet battles are reason for "strategy" tag - you have a map with bunch of factories that produce one of 4 resources every few seconds and a small number of robot producing bases, capture of which usually means victory over its owner, as mostly every participant only has 1. At base factory you construct robot models from parts to better suit your needs, goal is always to capture or destroy all enemy robot factories and robots. There is also option to control chosen robot in 3rd person. Plot was already touched on before, so won't spoil more - it's simple but decent, ofc side-quests and especially text adventures are no slouch either mostly. Audio also pretty good for when it was released, by modern standards - not so much. Same with graphics, as they did not have much distinct style age would probably hit them hardest among other aspects.
