I don't think I can imagine a better game for what this sets out to be. You can play it as an in-depth and demanding rpg where every decision matters, or you can change the settings and have a semi-idle crew management adventure to play while you're watching a favorite show or listening to an audiobook. Build-crafting can't really describe what goes into shaping your crew, ship, and captain in this game: you choose the game you want to play by choosing and developing these components. I really could not give this game higher praise, except to mention that the dev team has put out a patch every few days since its release -- including what would be many DLCs worth of content in any other game for free. One of my all-time favorites up there with Baldur's Gate II and Mount and Blade Warband!

I love this game. A space opera rogue-like that takes its emergent narrative seriously, it's a creative, high-value take on the genre. Moreover, this game is valued by its developers, who released their 300th free update recently. Through it all, they've maintained a commitment to building on their product without ever, ever asking for a microtransaction. It's the patches that introduce new content--you don't buy a $20 DLC, you just get a new class patched in at no added cost. ST:F comes complete with a series of unlocks to steer your play and encourage experimentation. I'm not even done with all the unlocks after 500 hours--it's that replayable.

I love to hate this game. It's the type of game you'll put hours in, only to suddenly wind up dead (if you play on hard or above, of course; though you can also customize difficulty). It's the kind of game where you'll find a great character who will suddenly become the WORST through RNG. It's the kind of game where you'll work towards a goal: Better ship, a story line, trading, and suddenly get creamed by an alien ship that if it doesn't outright kill you, leaves your bank account and ship in ruins. It's the kind of game that, even after nearly 4000 hours of playing, I'm still finding out new things, have to have about 6 tabs open to check on things I DO know, and I'll still screw things up occasionally. If you like Darkest Dungeon style combat, nearly infinite combinations for your character and officers, nearly infinite ship building ability, and every now and then want to feel like throwing your computer out a window, this is the game for you. If you want a game where understanding the mechanics can lead you down a rabbit hole of ???????????, this is your game. You want a game where it's updated for free without changing basic mechanics? Where the developers and community keep adding new ideas, new ways to play, are always willing to help out with advice or explanation? Got you, fam. Looking for a game that's a sandbox, where you can ignore every bit of story and make up your own? Where you can anger every faction and political entity to become the worst of the worst, or try to become loved by all? Maybe you want to hunt pirates, BE a pirate, or try to halt an alien invasion? You found it here. Did I mention that they're still giving FREE updates 7 years in? And GOOD updates, ones that add significantly to gameplay. All the while making and updating a Cyberpunk game? I don't know when they sleep. Anyway, yes. This is a Good Game with Good Developers that will make you, occasionally, want to tear your hair out and doubt all that is good in the world. Then again, when you finally DO get that end game ship, those perfect officers, save the galaxy... well, your next captain is waiting to start it all again. For less than $20, it's a damn steal.

A truly excellent game with bits of Darkest Dungeon and FTL along with multiple card games and good story writing. It does have a learning curve but once you understand the mechanics behind starship and character building it is a lot of fun. There are many great guides on Steam and elsewhere to get you started too. I've just completed all the achievements/unlocks and I don't usually play a game long enough for that. Same for reviews... this is the first game I've liked enough to review! It's good !!
