Stay Close is an indie survival horror experience that places atmosphere, uncertainty, and cooperation at the center of its design, resulting in a game that feels as unsettling as it is uneven. Developed and published by Blind Bird, the game drops players into a strange, abandoned town where normal rules seem to have broken down and danger feels omnipresent but rarely fully explained. Whether played solo or alongside another player in co-op, Stay Close emphasizes exploration and psychological tension rather than overt action, inviting players to slowly unravel its mysteries while constantly feeling exposed and vulnerable. The core premise revolves around being trapped in an anomalous environment alongside a companion, with survival hinging on staying alert, making careful decisions, and paying close attention to your surroundings. The town itself is designed to feel uncanny and hostile, with empty streets, dim lighting, and environmental cues that suggest something has gone terribly wrong. Rather than guiding the player with explicit objectives, the game encourages wandering, observation, and experimentation, creating a sense of unease rooted in not knowing what lies ahead or how safe any given area truly is. Gameplay leans heavily into exploration-driven survival rather than complex systems. There is little emphasis on traditional combat, and instead the tension comes from navigating unfamiliar spaces, avoiding threats, and managing limited information. This stripped-down approach works in favor of immersion, as players are rarely distracted by menus or stat management. However, it also means the experience can feel thin or repetitive over time, especially for players expecting deeper mechanics or more structured progression. Much of the challenge comes from interpreting environmental clues and reacting to unexpected situations rather than mastering refined gameplay systems. The cooperative element is one of Stay Close’s most distinctive features and often its strongest asset. Playing with another person heightens the sense of vulnerability and emotional investment, as communication and coordination become essential to survival. Sharing discoveries, reacting to sudden scares, or simply navigating the oppressive environment together can lead to memorable moments that solo play struggles to replicate. That said, the effectiveness of co-op is partly dependent on having an available partner, and with a smaller active player base, accessing this mode can sometimes be more difficult than intended. Visually, the game conveys its horror through mood rather than graphical fidelity. The environments are bleak and intentionally sparse, using fog, darkness, and emptiness to create tension. While this aesthetic supports the atmosphere, it also exposes the game’s technical roughness. Animations, controls, and visual clarity can feel dated or unpolished, occasionally breaking immersion. These issues are not always game-breaking, but they contribute to a sense that the title could have benefited from additional refinement and iteration. Narrative elements are intentionally fragmented, delivered through environmental storytelling rather than direct exposition. Clues are scattered and subtle, leaving players to piece together events and form their own interpretations of what happened in the town. This ambiguity will appeal to players who enjoy open-ended storytelling and theory crafting, but others may find the lack of clear resolution unsatisfying. The story feels more like a backdrop for exploration than a driving force, reinforcing the idea that atmosphere takes priority over narrative clarity. Overall, Stay Close is a game defined by its ambition and mood rather than its polish. It succeeds in creating a consistently eerie environment and offers moments of genuine tension, particularly in cooperative play. At the same time, its mechanical simplicity, technical shortcomings, and vague narrative structure limit its broader appeal. For players drawn to slow-burn horror, open exploration, and shared survival experiences, it can be a memorable journey. For those seeking tightly designed systems or a clear, story-driven arc, it may feel incomplete, reflecting the mixed but passionate response it has received from its community. Rating: 6/10

Fantastic fun! I can't believe how long it's taken me to write this review. I played this years ago with a friend and it was an absolute blast! Atmosphere, different types of enemies with different mechanics, riddles, and each area of the map were curated wonderfully. It made for great content farming and I highly recommend for my creators out there!
