What a great game I think most of us, at least once, have thought about creating a game of our own after dealing with the shortcomings of something we were playing. For all of us, though, that idea remained just a fantasy. This small indie team actually pursued that idea, and they ended up creating something that, in my opinion, is nothing short of a masterpiece, especially considering the size of the team behind it. I am about five hours into the game. I think I have unlocked most, if not all, of the basic mechanics. I can safely say that Stonemachia is probably the most frenetic souls-like I have ever played. The combat system is excellent, especially if you come from games like Lies of P or Khazan . It is built around both dodging and parrying, the inputs feel clean and the enemies are readable. That alone would already make Stonemachia a very enjoyable game, but it goes much deeper than that. You are given only a single potion, and once you use it, you have to refill it by parrying enemies. This adds a lot of dynamism to the combat system, because the only way to heal is to actually keep fighting while you are in danger. This makes already tense situations even more intense. There are also healing items scattered around some arenas, which means positioning matters too. On top of that, you have different combat stances that you can switch between instantly, and you can even COMBO!! their special abilities together. Each stance has different utilities and movement speeds, which becomes important in fights where you need to move from one point to another as quickly as possible or deal as much damage as possible to a given number of enemies. On top of that, you also have ultimate abilities that charge up when you play well, and they feel incredibly satisfying both to earn and to unleash. What I really like (and I am sure most of you will) about this combat system is that all of this depth is 100% optional. I think many players will probably stick to the most balanced stance and never really experiment with stance-switching combos. In my opinion, that is a suboptimal way to play, but it is also great design: the game lets you decide how dynamic and responsive you want the combat to be. Small gameplay hint: Moving around with jump + dash makes you way faster, especially when in the Knight (Horse) stance. And if a great combat system were not enough, the exploration is also surprisingly good. The levels are full of secrets, and some of them can only be reached through parkour or by paying close attention to your surroundings. No more random invisible-wall nonsense; finally, exploration that rewards actual effort and observation rather than blind guessing. Even better, you can usually tell when you have missed one of the bigger optional secrets, because you can see it sealed away. So, if you want to fully explore an area, or at least get close to doing so, the developers give you just enough of a hint without taking away the fun of discovery. Parkour and mindful exploration are either non-existent or extremely rare in most souls-likes I have played (which is most of the most famous ones): this makes exploration in this game feel genuinely refreshing. And if all of that still is not enough to convince you, the game also has great art direction, very cool ideas and lovely music and ambience. I bought this game just to pass the time in the evenings when I had nothing else to do. I did not expect much from it, especially since I never even cared enough to try the demo. But I am now genuinely amazed by how FUN this game is. In my opinion, it is worth every single penny of its price tag, and probably more. Even ignoring the fact that it is a small indie project, as of now I would give the game a well-earned 9/10. I will update this review once I finish the game. I honestly cannot wait to keep playing Edit after completing the game: Everything I said above remained true until the end of the game. I would only slightly lower my score from 9/10 to 8.5/10, because over time, once you spend a bit of time experimenting with all the mechanics, you start to notice that some of them are noticeably stronger than others. A few abilities can make the game much easier, to the point where you naturally feel encouraged to rely on that smaller, more effective set instead of exploring the full range of options. That said, this does not take much away from the experience. It is still a great game, and one I absolutely recommend

Genuinely one of the most visually unique and memorable games I've played in a long time. So many games have appeared with the "souls-like" and "spectacle fighter" tags lately that lack any soul and identity, then this game by a very small team appears with a vision unlike anything I've played in a very long time. The music is absolutely gorgeous, the fights are incredible both visually and choreographically, and the variety of designs amongst both the npcs and the world are just brilliant. I find myself standing in awe in every new place I discover. The way everything just oozes with style and flaunts the obvious inspirations from Italian art and biblical scripture makes this game so mesmerizing I barely have words for it, and I haven't even beaten the game yet. Also, I can't tell you any other game that's let me murder a windmill, get ganged up on by bidets AND gave me an achievement for letting a cat pet me. This game has a few rough edges and could use a bit more optimization, but considering this was made by a team of (at the time of writing this) 9 people, I am incredibly impressed by this game. I honestly cannot recommend it enough. Even playing this on my old 1060 3GB (at 720p), it's a gorgeous game. Really brings me back to my first time playing the original Dark Souls.

-Divine soundtracks -Holy gameplay -Holy skybox Best experience of the year, I hope this game will get more visibility because the few devs deserve it and for the game to get a physical vinyl OST.

I finished the game in a little over 12 hours so let’s talk about it. Stonemachia is jokingly referred to online as the sequel to Chess as you are playing as chess pieces in this game. Your main form is the Pawn and you’ll gather other pieces such as the Bishop, Knight, and Rook that all behave differently and are useful in different scenarios. I found myself sticking to the Pawn the vast majority of the game as I just got used to the speed of the attacks and healing with it. The Rook is your big damage slow swing class, the bishop is your super quick but low damage class, and the knight is….well….a drill. I never really found a good scenario for the knight in the game. This game is parry focused but dodging is completely viable in it as well as you get a nice counter attack animation with a perfect dodge. Parrying builds up a special attack that you can unleash for a good chunk of damage after you’ve parried enough in the fight. The game has a ton of different enemies with different move sets to keep it interesting throughout your entire playthrough. The bosses are extremely well designed, minus a few that I had complaints on but that’s neither here nor there. The environments and the story in this game honestly had me more perplexed than any game I’ve ever played. I mean just look at this guy what is this (insert clip of giant thing staring). I had a hard time keeping up with the story and I just kept getting distracted by wondering what type of drugs the developers were on to create some of the sceneries and enemies in this game. I hope there is a video or an excerpt at some point that can help someone like me that’s not as smart to understand the story of this game. The game has collectible cards and vinyl records to gather throughout your playthrough if you’re in to that sort of thing. I will be going back to 100% this game as soon as they add a fast travel, which they’ve stated they are working on. My biggest complaint of this game is the pretty significant screen shake anytime you hit an enemy or when they hit you. There is no option to turn it off and it makes it difficult to chain together attacks as you can’t really see what the boss is winding up to do. I’m hoping they implement an option to turn this off. Overall I’d give this game an 8.5/10. The graphics are beautiful, the enemies and bosses are interesting and well designed for the most part, the environments are super interesting and even unsettling at points, and combat is flowy and really solid, and the game runs very well on a modest system like I have myself. If you’re into soulslikes and specifically indie games, don’t miss out on this one. This might be the best new indie soulslike on the market.

A tough game to review. On the one hand, it is undeniably rough around the edges; animations are stiff and hard to read, models clip into each other constantly, there are numerous glitches and hitbox issues... But this is also a tightly paced and fully-featured soulslike from a tiny team for a fraction of the usual price, and it manages to stay fresh and interesting throughout its whole 10ish hour runtime. The variety in enemies, environments, and especially bosses is frankly astounding. The italian chess theme is a fun gimmick that manages to not overstay its welcome. The act of simply moving around the environment feels fun because of the air-dodging speed boost mechanic and the Knight class letting you zoom around insanely fast. The overly-generous parry window makes up for the clunky animations, so that's two problems that sort of cancel each other out. I didn't find much use for the various different classes; the upgrade system clearly was trying to encourage swapping between the different classes constantly but I found that just spamming the parry button in Pawn form got me through 90% of the game without much issue. Overall, it's a great way to spend 10 hours for people who have already gotten their fill of Dark Souls. And Bloodborne. And Elden Ring. And Lies of P. And Nioh. And... (continues on for however many soulslikes you've played).
