June 2025
Sunlight is a philosophical and abstract walking simulator that caught my interest partly because of the phrase: 'powerful 3D audio experience' and also because apparently, a tree is planted for every copy of the game sold, which of course is absolutely fantastic. But aside from that, the experience was rather disappointing, and unfortunately, there's no other way to put it. The game isn't outright terrible, and I don't want to tear it apart, but once again I found myself struggling with whether to give it a thumbs-up or down. In the end, even that decision took longer than the game itself. The idea itself is good but the implementation just didn’t convince me. The only thing that is flawless and truly well done is the choral singing, both in terms of performance and recording, exactly how it should be. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to the spoken voices heard in the game. Quite Often acoustic clarity is lacking, and the way all these voices shift from right to left and back again feels excessive and poorly structured. It would have been better to keep one or two voices at a time in mono, while carefully panning the rest left and right in a way that maintains both balance and clarity instead of tonal clutter. The mere 40 minutes wouldn’t bother me, especially if a tree is being planted for it, but it didn’t give me anything or evoke any feelings in me and I’m usually very open to things like this. Even the sound of the footsteps in this environment, as well as the wind, felt too thin and inauthentic. At certain points, you can hear people moving in the room during the recording or making mouth noises, which honestly just made me wonder - why? What does that have to do with anything? I’m in a virtual world, meant to be walking through some sort of forest, yet the sound design feels like a theater stage, with no real connection. I noticed a few other things as well, but let's leave it at that. Anyone fascinated by out-of-body experiences and altered states of consciousness might give it a go, but don’t expect too much. Better yet, expect even less - as little as possible. And have I mentioned that a tree will be planted for it?

Just what the label says. A short relaxing philosophical stroll in the forest.

A slow but short walk through panpsychism. Not really a game, more of a gently guided experience. I walked around a lot at the end, seeing what was left. Worth a couple of bucks and a little over half an hour of your time, if you're in an introspective mood.

This is a very niche game (YES, IT'S STILL A GAME). But if you enjoy games that feel like interactive movies, it's pretty alright. I think it lacks some immersion - I would have varied the gameplay a little, but it very much fits the point. Though, the ending was predictable. 7/10 for me
