First time leaving a review on Steam. I wanted to join the conversation after seeing some negative reviews. I'm a die-hard hockey fan. I follow it daily, have played every NHL game, and have thousands of hours in NHL video games. So I should be cracked at this game, right? Wrong. And guess what? That’s okay. This game is a hockey roguelite, not an NHL sim. I actually have two friends who don’t play NHL games at all, and they’re better than me at this game. I think the main reason is that I bring “EA NHL” habits into this game, and that playstyle doesn’t exactly work here. Yes, you can score point shots. Yes, you can deke backhand-forehand cheese. But it’s not as consistent as using the powerups the way they’re intended. I think this is why I’m seeing players frustrated and they simply need to adapt to a new style of hockey game. I wanted to get that out of the way because the negative reviews I’ve read regarding “bad defense AI” feel like they’re coming from the same EA NHL crowd who have had those complaints for years while playing EA NHL titles. My response to these people is simple: get good. You have insane powerups at your disposal, so use them. (Example: the Honk powerup on a defender, this is a strong powerup and a great alternative to playing traditional defense.) My second point is difficulty. I hope the devs never cave and make this game easier, because I promise there is nothing more boring than an easy hockey game. Where’s the risk or excitement? I enjoy the challenge and the constant threat of an opponent being able to beat me in any challenge or game. There are times when an opponent already has two goals and is on a breakaway, and I’m fully clenched, thinking my run is about to be over. That is exactly what you want from this style of game. Anyway, to wrap up this yap of a review: this is the best hockey game on Steam, and it isn’t even close. If you’re a hockey fan, this game is a must-buy, plain and simple. The devs have tons of inside jokes and references to past and present players, and they very clearly know and follow the sport. What they have here is an amazing early access game. **End of Review** **Start of Critique** Now, onto my actual critique. I found myself enjoying the 2.0 version a lot more than the standard game, and what’s kept me coming back is the Trios team. The game plays extremely well in a three-man roster format, and I ended up preferring it. When I go back to a five-man roster, it almost feels crowded. Some experimenting with team sizes could go a long way, especially with the number of hidden/unreleased teams. There’s tons of potential for unique runs and variety here, and it would be cool to see everything from one- to five-man rosters. An idea for a one-man roster could be a Gretzky themed team: one player versus five. I also think the game could benefit from more run variety, like having the ability to refresh a boss or include some sort of refresh/replace mechanic so runs feel fully unique. For example, if someone is tired of the Golf or Soccer level, a refresh or swap button could give them an ice hockey boss instead, with increased difficulty after more than one swap, or something similar. (The ice hockey boss can be pulled from the existing pool of teams available to players, like Trios Squad, Speed Squad or Defence Squad). I’ve been playing a ton of Megabonk recently and thinking about which aspects of that game make every run feel fresh (refresh, skip, ban, increase chance). Bringing systems like these into this game could set up interesting “builds” or themed runs. I think there’s real potential for hockey sticks or equipment to act as pathways similar to weapons, with the existing powerups already functioning like tomes (in comparison to Megabonk). On the topic of equipment powerups, I think It would be cool if you had sticks that did things better than others (Wristshots, Snapshots, Slapshots, Dekes, etc.) Something I do love in hockey games is the feeling of a well aimed, well timed wristshot, and the flex of the stick when holding down for a wristshot. I feel that wristshots are missing from the game and would add variety in goal scoring. All of the above ideas and themes could also be applied to skates: to improve skating edgework, gloves: to grant new dekes, etc. All of this wrapped up in a deep amount of unlockables that players can earn thru challenges to aquire new equipment. Sky is the limit imo.

I find this game insanely frustrating. The core gameplay is great. Making plays can be very satisfying. My only issue is the goal-tending. The opponent's goalies will consistently make god-like saves, blocking up to 30 shots without getting scored on. No matter what I try: 2-0 with passing, save; breakaway with a deke, save; one timer from the slot, save. Meanwhile my goalie gets scored on from the centre line. It's so frustratingly un-fun.

I bought this game after seeing it on LTT. The game is pretty fun and it reminds me of NHL '94. Can't wait for the full game release.

This game is honestly incredible even at its current stage in development, As of now unless you want to max out/unlock everything and achievement hunt the game only contains about 8-12 hours of gameplay though that will soon change with their full overhaul to the roguelite system and progression. All in all it's one of my favorite hockey games, especially with the nhl series games not being on pc, 8/10 Really fun arcade hockey game
