Disclaimer: I've yet to beat this game. So far, it's all the Papers Please gameplay I've been missing in my life. Art wise, it's solid. Music wise, also solid. Story wise, not so solid. They do a great job of setting the scene and easing you into the job. Where it falls off is that much like Papers Please this game has characters who ask for favors. Unlike Papers Please your choices have little effect in the long run. If you say to yourself "wow, this guy is a jerk. There's no way I'm letting his friend in. I'll take a warning please" only to find said friend as a choice that they shouldn't even be in later on. The game devs appear to have made their content based on these special characters but didn't include a plot without them. I'll update this when I'm done but as of now i give it a 7/10. it gets a thumbs up but only marginally.
This is quite an interesting take on the style of game that has gotten somewhat popular since Papers, Please. I've played the forerunner, and the several other similar games such as No Umbrellas Allowed (presently my favorite). However there's one thing that most of these games, is a little limp on, even the ones that intend to follow the tone of their trailblazer, being just sheer speed and cruelty of the complexity. For example, I note that Papers, Please has a steadily increasing complexity that, while it is indeed stressful trying to keep up with, the progression of stays relatively slow, only really piling on one or two rules or changes to your workflow and you're never quite comfortable. This game, started out similarly. Easy, simple to follow mechanics that built up in complexity most every day... and then it just hit me over the head with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brick. Twice. It let me get comfortable. In some cases giving me as many as 3 days without any significant criteria or mechanics changes, and then suddenly the next day afterwards, *most* of the information that I am checking for has changed, and on top of that there's a new mechanic AND the most recent time, the visual design of the documents im inspecting changed also! Im stressed the hell out! Im floundering! The changes can come sudden, hard, and fast. Im writing this while taking a break to chill out after absolutely biffing a day due to drastically altered work assignments and OH BOY. This game's great. It's fitting the footsteps of the games of similar type that have come before with new ideas, a beautiful new coat of paint, and yet another uniquely horrifying dystopia to explore. The devs have done a brilliant job at using the mechanics to make the player feel the same kind of bursts of overwhelmed panic that the pressure of having your entire workflow changed on a dime without warning or preparation. But WOW am I tense after playing this for like an hour or two. It's brilliant, but it's rough, and taxing. That's not even to consider how supremely depressing the theming of the game is in the current economic landscape... 10/10 no notes, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep.
Honestly just a play on todays sick society and where we are heading. Without spoiling too much, I love the way this game highlights todays morbid but truthful tactics on job searching, work/life balance, and living in a society where privacy feels like a rare commodity. You just have to play it, it doesn't get boring and has good playability. Love the style, the music, and graphics.
