Games fantastic but the management seems lost. I would not be surprised if they close servers within 6 months

Ignore my hours played--I have nearly 600 hours on this game from its time on the Tempo launcher. I started playing by paying 30$ for access to the Closed Beta, and the original 3 heroes (Vanessa, Pygmalien and Dooley). Thank God this game is on Steam, now. The Bazaar was launched under a very, very long series of genuinely terrible financial decisions. Originally a Kickstarter project, The Bazaar has become at one point an NFT collector, at another a P2W gacha-style game. Buyer beware, this game was launched on Steam as a last-ditch effort to recover from these mistakes. Now, The Bazaar is just a 40$ AA-price tag game. It has cosmetics which cannot be traded or shared, and simply reskin your items/hero for some mild flexing. Despite the unbelievable financial and business related decisions of the Tempo team, the actual game is lightning in a bottle. It's an asynchronous PVPVE roguelite deckbuilder autobattler. The core of this game is peerless. There is nothing on the market, or in the world, that offers a similarly wide sandbox for strategy and skill expression. There are essentially infinite combinations of viable builds, and the pool of discovery you can make personally is unbelievable. Also, as an asynchronous game, it can be played at any speed or regularity. You can put the game down for several days and return to your same run, if you wish. I have had so many unforgettable experiences with this game that I have spent a significant amount of my time in communities specifically made for The Bazaar, to share, workshop, and brainstorm builds. There are a special few games that are worth much, much more than any price tag. I have spent nearly 400$ on Team Fortress 2, and I believe my experiences far exceeded that value. I see The Bazaar as a very similar experience. It is, unlike Team Fortress 2, only forty dollars. If you have even a passing interest in autobattlers, this is by far the best of the genre. EDIT: I didn't expect this review to get so much visibility, so I've removed some of my snarky comments.

The game went through several iterations of monetization. First it released in paid early access like Path of Exile 2. You got one free ranked ticket a day to win chests that contained both cosmetics and gems. Otherwise, you needed to pay 100 gems to keep playing ranked. Free play offered no chests or rewards. You can spend money to buy gems. Then it released in open beta as a free-to-play game where you can buy new characters with gems. They removed the free ranked ticket a day and introduced a battle pass with daily and weekly missions to progress through it. The battle pass had a free track and a paid track. There was also a subscription model that, when active, earns you double chests in ranked play, double pass XP, and exclusive cosmetics. Free play still offered no chests or rewards, but can contribute towards daily and weekly XP missions. Then it released in 1.0 as a free-to-play game. They course corrected and gave back the free ranked ticket a day, and the battle pass is single track that all players have access to. The subscription remained to earn double chests in ranked play and double battle pass XP. Free play still offered no chests or rewards, but can contribute towards daily and weekly XP missions. And now we're here on Steam release where the game is a paid product. You can no longer buy new characters with gems and must buy them with real money. Ranked play no longer requires tickets and chests can now be earned with free play. The game terminated subscriptions but all players now earn double chests. At its core, the game is fun. It's clear that whomever worked on this game busted their asses off to make it with its visual design, sound effects, character design, lore building, voice acting, and numerous balance passes. It was also clear that, with the open beta and 1.0 iterations, the game was never going to get a penny from players that played the game enough to accrue the gems needed to purchase the new characters. So a decision was made to make The Bazaar a paid product. The base game is now $40 that comes with the original 3 characters, Vanessa, Pygmalien, and Dooley. Mak and Stelle are considered DLC characters that cost $20 each. Reviewing this product as it is now, I'd say it's worth the money, especially when it goes on sale. You can sink in hundreds of hours to create wild builds, commit to ranked play, and collect all the cosmetics. If the argument was that they're trying to take the money and run, they would've done that already and never bothered to release it on Steam. If the game shut down in the next couple of months, it wouldn't take away the hours of fun I had playing it since October 2024, but also I'd just get back to my ever-increasing backlog of other games. IDGAF what the developers says or does on their socials or communities. My "relationship" with this game and any other game I play is transactional: I pay because I think it's fun, and when I'm done, I move on.

This is one of the only times I wish that I was able to give a game a neutral rating instead of a do/don't recommend. On one hand the gameplay itself is amazing, I have 600 hours or so on the launcher prior to steam and its an extremely unique and fun auto-battler (closest to something like backpack battles or super auto pets). It has an insane amount of polish and the art team for the game is phenomenal. You can play run after run after run and have a different build every time and have insane amounts of fun doing it with 800 different items spread across 5 heroes. On the other hand, the games management and financial decisions are extremely shady and seemingly not in the best interest of the consumer. From originally being a F2P game filled with NFTs with a player to player marketplace (both have now been abandoned thankfully) to now being the price of a AAA yearly CoD game if you buy all the playable heroes, this game has been flip-flopping all over the place in terms of their monetisation. I have bought many things with real money that became free to use later, likewise I have bought many things with in-game free currency that later became paid expansions. Please form your own opinions about this game, buy it and play a run or two and refund it if its not for you or the monetisation you see is not something you want to support. Watch some of the youtubers and streamers talk about the game and watch them play it. Ignore the probably hundred of clown reacts alot of the positive reviews are going to get, the monetisation is poor but the game itself is amazing and I cannot blame anyone for giving it a positive or negative review as both are extremely valid. TL:DR - The raw gameplay itself is amazing, unique and very replayable. The monetisation and pricing around it and the in-game content is very strange, predatory and changes constantly with time, take this as a precaution when buying things. Overall I DO recommend the game purely because the actual game is amazing, though I would rate it neutrally if I could due to the poor monetisation practices

WARNING: While the gameplay is top notch there are some considerations when playing this game, namely the communication and community support. Any neutral statement, constructive criticism, or disagreement with the developer's actions will be met with a ban in any of the public forums (Discord, Reddit, Steam). They have a track record of making sweeping changes to core functionality with little to no notice. It seems to me that they select the least consumer friendly option first and then are forced to backtrack due to the overwhelming responses they get from their players. They have broken promises made early in development and have dramatically changed portions of the game that people have already paid for. Balance is neither a goal nor a strength of the game and there will often be weeks or months long periods where broken items will dominate the meta. That being said, I bought in as a founder in early access and have been playing regularly since. I have put hundreds of hours into the game and have been "legend" at every time that was possible. The game has great visual polish, an addicting gameplay loop, infinite replayability and honestly it's just a lot of fun. If you can hold your nose and put up with all of the nonsense that comes from the game developer, the actual product is excellent.
