What It Is - A side scrolling management sim - You are an adorable red panda who is running an abandoned gas station - The previous owner has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and you slowly uncover what happened - the story is fed to you piecemeal through conversations with quirky customers and strange goings-on in the middle of the night. How It Plays - The game runs on a day/night cycle. - You manually pump gas for customers, restock your store, checkout customers. - The game starts simple with pumping gas - you can incrementally unlock upgrades to earn more money, like running a car wash and a mechanic shop. - Each aspect of the business has an interactive mini game behind it, like stopping the gas pump at the right time, changing out car batteries by hitting the right buttons, power washing pixelated dirt clumps off cars etc. - You need to upgrade and decorate the gas station to level up your ‘popularity,’' ‘civilization’ level, and ‘mystery’ — each contribute to your progress and earnings. Art Style - Pixelated art style, with smooth animation - Adorable character design - Colourful and vibrant during the day - Eerie vibes at night What I like - Clear sense of progression through the skill tree and unlocks are nicely paced. - The story behind it is interesting, and much more than you typically get in a shop/management sim - Gameplay loop is satisfying, and each day goes by quickly. - It took me about 12 hours to finish, which I thought was the right amount of time to avoid things dragging on. Criticisms - Towards the end of the game, things slow down a lot - customer density caps out and so much of those manual mini games that you complete earlier on become automated, leaving you with not much to do during the day but serve customers in the shop and wait. It’s odd, because the more you progress and unlock, the less you end up interacting with the game, so it leaves a lot of downtime. - The mini games become a bit monotonous as you’re repeating them hundreds of times over. - NPC dialogue can be lengthy, and this usually happens in the middle of a busy day when you’ve got multiple other customers to attend to. The customers don’t seem to care and will wait infinitely, which is a bit odd - there really is no urgency. - The car wash is so far away from the gas station, it’s a bit of a hassle to run back and forth to keep serving customers there - this one of the first tasks I automated as soon as I could. Overall This is a cosy sim with a surprisingly dark mystery underpinning it, best enjoyed if you like management games and don’t mind a slower pace as it winds down.

This little simulator game has been a surprise delight. I didn't even know it existed until I saw friends buying it in my activity feed, and it made me curious. I dove in immediately after buying, unable to resist, and have been playing it quite a lot since. I've now got around 16 hours in, and here are some of my observations and thoughts after playing for that long. ♦ The pixel art is stunning. I love the cute character designs, as well as the world and all the decorative objects and visuals you can place in it. You can't customize the main character at all, but it's a very cute red panda design, so I have no complaints. ♦ The game is very relaxing and low stakes. There's a sense of "something is not quite right" and some mysteries that slowly unfold as you play, but the day-to-day activities feel very mellow. I never felt like I was struggling to keep up with the customers, which is good because you don't have the option to hire any additional help. ♦ I really enjoyed the lore and story, and how it slowly built up over time. There are several different "legends" you learn about, such as Bigfoot and UFOs, that will affect things around your gas station as you progress. There are a lot of quirky, fun NPCs that will visit your shop and talk to you at the register, telling you more about the town and legends. You can find and collect tape recorders that give backstory. Overall the characters and mysteries give the game a really mysterious, fun vibe. ♦ Speaking of the legends, I loved that there was a points system to these and different merchandise and decorations can effect them. There's also a "civilization" meter, and the focus you put into either civilization or legends can tip the scales in certain directions and influence your game, especially when it comes to the endings you can get. ♦ The mechanics of purchasing and stocking were very satisfying. I did sometimes get frustrated with placing shelves in the store, since space is limited and restrictive, but I loved the freedom to place things anywhere on the shelves. Inventory space is very reasonable, and it's easy to tell what you have in stock while ordering and placing items. Shelves are also themed by the type of merchandise you can place there, which was good for progression and unlocking new types of products. ♦ I only ever experienced one bug: when talking to customers at the gas pump when I didn't have enough gas to fill their order, the game locked for several seconds where I couldn't move/do anything. But after automation, this doesn't matter anyway. Other than that, the game ran flawlessly. ♦ There are a couple areas that unlock, but they feel purposeless. Most of your game will take place on one stretch of road, and inside your store. There are two areas that unlock after, but there's not actually anything to do there beyond the first day you visit. They're just there. ♦ For the most part, the pacing is done very well in this game. You build up the influx of customers steadily, and you're upgrading your equipment along the way to help automate the process. ♦ The area where this game suffers the most is in the end game pacing. My customers seem to have capped out at 18 per day, which is really not a lot. By this point, almost all the tasks are automated, so a higher number of customers would make more sense. The only real tasks left for you as the player are related to maintaining the shop inside: buying products, stocking them, and then ringing up customers (and the upgraded register makes this very quick). And it makes sense that a lot of the customers per day end up in the store to help give you something to do, but this means achieving milestones for everything else outside the store can be really tedious. Almost nobody gets gas, repairs, or car washes anymore. I want to get more Steam achievements and finish "The Last Gas Station" quest, but it's going at a snail's pace. ♦ It also takes too long to level up your legends and popularity; the achievements for each legend are for level 40, but most of mine are still in the 20s range. It feels like it's lagging behind compared to my other progress. Also, helping customers no longer seems to have much influence over the "popularity" meter. Edit: I've started completely changing up my decor and facades to get the level 40. So it's doable, but the progress feels hollow because as soon as I change my decor to get to the next category, all the progress will go away. I really wish selling items in store was doing more of the leg work, so we could get the level 40s without sacrificing progress in one legend to get the progress in another. It feels like the decor is carrying too much of the weight. I know I wrote a lot at the end there related to not enjoying some of the end game, but overall I had A LOT of fun with this game. It's grindy and repetitive but sometimes that's exactly what I need, especially since I was using this as a pallet cleanser between heavier games. It's cute, quirky, and eerie, all while still being very chill.

I think its kinda important to understand before you get The Last Gas Station who its for. Because this isn't really for people looking for a deep or particularly well balanced management game. Its a game for people who want to work towards a mystery plot, albeit only having 1 proper puzzle. However, its a fun mystery with an enjoyable conclusion and very good music for the endings. Its about 8-10 hours long getting all the endings. If you're a fan of short, weird narratives told through small bursts of information, its pretty good. Just dont expect gameplay thats super deep

The perfect blend of cozy management and 'something is definitely wrong here'-vibes! I am absolutely hooked! The pixel art is gorgeous and the gameplay loop is incredibly satisfying. It's so much fun to start from a rundown gas station, expand and modernize your equipment! During the day you serve cute animal customers and manage the gas station, road side shop, workshop and car wash. Juggling tasks like inventory management and different work activities (serving gas, tire pumping, oil refreshing, scratch removal, washing cars, stocking shelves, checking out customers, etc!) There are occasional events happening during the day and night cycle, unlocking new parts of the story; be it dialogue or a new area to explore. But don't get comfortable just yet as the mystery of the previous owner and warnings about the night keep you on edge! Is this the real life, or is this just fantasy? Who knows! Just, seriously.. don't go out at night. 🚗⛽🏪

Edit: I do wish I could customize my character!!!! Edit2: Roughly 10-12 hours of content according to the devs. At full price just a bit under an hour per dollar. I'm a big fan of Shop Keeper games, especially ones that combine Mini Games for some of the activities. (Rather than just hitting a key and there's no real interaction.) The other thing that sold me was the adorable art style, big big fan of that too! I wasn't sure at first whether to grab it or not, but I didn't notice that it was Alawar that developed it at first. I enjoyed Beholder enough that I thought I'd give this one a try, despite how it had no reviews. (At the time when I bought it.) I'm hoping there will be a good chunk of content to do and exlpore, but I'm enjoying myself all the same at the moment! The other thing that I hope for is that there will be more content added into the game, whether its paid DLC or free updates, whichever. Just a sucker for shop keeper games so always wanting more to do in them haha. I haven't had any bugs, minor or major. I'll keep this updated if there are any major issues. ⢠⠊⣉⠒⠤⢀⡀ ⡐⢁⣉⠒⢄ ⡇⢸ ⠉⠐⠢⢌⠑⢄ ⡸ ⡆ ⠢ ⠱⡀ ⡇⢸ ⣀⠗ ⠉⠉⠁ ⠙⠢⠤⡀⢃⢱ ⡇⠘⣄⢀⠔⠉ ⠈⠁⠘⡄ ⢇ ⠁ ⠘⡄ ⢸ ⢀⣀⣀⡀ ⢀⣀⣀⡀ ⢣ ⡸ ⢴⣾⡿⠿⠿⠇ ⠘⠛⠛⠛ ⠈⢄ ⠰⡁ ⢠⠒⠢⡀⠈⠒⠊ ⡠⢄ ⡘ ⠱⣀ ⢀⠜ ⠇ ⢀⠔⠁ ⡏ ⠑⠤⢄⣀⠔⠁ ⡜ ⠊⠁ ⢀⠜”
