The Longing for me wasn't a game; it’s an existential partner that sat quietly with me as I worked, procrastinated, and questioned what it all meant The shade became my silent coworker, a pixelated companion who never judged my productivity or the number of times I alt-tabbed to check emails or minimize it on a meeting call. Like a Tamagotchi for introverts, it needed just enough attention to remind me it was there but never demanded more than I could give. we explored caves, read books, and even stared at walls in contemplative silence. And now, after some hours, I say goodbye to my loyal, brooding little friend. So long, my work companion. May your shadowy vigil continue in the deep halls of my eternal hall of memory.

This game is not for everyone. Your only goal is to wake the king after 400 real-time days. It's a really slow, deliberate and unique experience that gives you a lot of time to think and practice your patience if you are able to engage with it on it's own terms. Your character, the shade, walks very, very slowly. They have lots of time after all. So, what do you want to do? You could just sit and wait for the days to pass of course, but where's the fun in that? Why not explore the vast underground tunnels of a fallen kingdom? Very slowly uncover ancient mysteries, find secret places or interesting items to create a cozy home for yourself? Are there other people in these halls? Can time pass at different speeds? Maybe you can find a different or faster way to "win" the game? Is "winning" even the goal? You are alone and you have all the time in the world. What will you do with it? Can you bear it passing so painfully slowly? And in the end, was it worth it? Is this a metaphor for life itself? The game offers a very interesting and deeply thought-provoking experience over a long time. Ingame-time also passes while you are not actively playing. So you can engage as much or as little as you want with it, while still slowly progressing towards the end. In todays fast-paced everyday life, it's a welcome offering, to just slow down, take in the sights and spend some quiet time with just your thoughts and feelings. And those of the shade, of course.

The Longing it´s def one of the most surreal experiences I have had over many years of gaming. Not in the sense that the game it´s fill with odd things, but because it´s a game which you play by waiting mostly. It´s a completely unique way to approach a gaming experience that I have no idea how the devs came up with and also masterfully excecute it when there are no precedents of it. You start on the day the king creates you, a shadow, just a small and slow humanoid dark thing that looks weak and fragile. Your only reason to be it´s to wake up the king from his slumber of 400 days... that occur in REAL TIME. From that moment you are completely free, you can wake up the king from the go, you can explore, but most importantly, you can wait. The game is always running, this character lives under the same time rules as you do in real life. You could play one day and not return in two months and the shade would have just stay there, for 60 days, sleeping on the cold floor of the massive cave he and the king inhabit, dreaming. The character is, and exists, just as you do, bound in time. You cannot pause the game, you cannot return to an old save, you cannot change the date of your computer to a later day or it will notice and punish you. Completionist now are probably thinking better to avoid it then, but don´t worry, you have plenty of time in those 400 days to achieve anything in the game. As you explore the cave and found new things you start to interact with the main puzzle or challenge of the game, waiting. Drops of water that fall from stalactite will make a pond, mosh will grow, mushroom will repproduce, and all of it can be used to either progress your path or just create decorations for your own small piece of the cave. But you gotta wait for it. The game becomes quite frankly meditating, with a soundtrack that hits you on specific moments with what I can only describe as "cave dweller wave", the sense of imprisioment it´s there and yet our character doesn´t seem to be weighted by it in a way more fitting to horror games even when there´s certainly some horror themes presented but from the perspective of the shade, they are just things that are because they are meant to be. The shade can remember places and you can go from one to other, you could spend 15 minutes playing just watching this critter walk from one place of the cave to the other and just dwell on the atmosphere and ambient of the game. It´s the equivalent in gaming to video experiences like Wavelength (1967, from Michael Snow) or Sleep (1964, Andy Warhol), except that unlike those filmed experiences, this one does have a real narrative, it has a point, it´s actually saying something rather than just experience with a new format without really adding art into it (which it may have being the intention of those movies, but gaming it´s a far more active entertainment). I have being completely mesmerized by this game experience and I really think a lot of people would if they give it the chance, it may not be for everyone, but if it clicks for you, it really clicks, and you are provided with one of the more unique games I played in the last decade for sure. A rate it 34 out of 34 coal rocks and 3 crudly painted spiders.

i sometimes wish i could wipe my memory. just forget certain things, like books or tv shows or games, just so i can experience them for the first time again. never have i ever wanted that more than now, after finishing this game. this game gave me comfort only a few could. building the shade a home and decorating it while it rained outside my window on a friday night. this game was such a fun experience. i hope that in a few years i shall forget it enough to replay it, and be immersed anew.
