Joyous repossession to some jazzy beats with a delightfully whimsical aesthetic. Run circles around slow but erratic guards and their myopic sniffer dogs to clean out art galleries as fast as possible. Mouse controls might not be universally appealing. Running around gets hectic, so some dexterity with the mouse is required if a gamepad is unavailable. A thumb stick allows for better control of movement and positioning, whereas a mouse makes it easier to aim gadget throws. There is a convenient setting to enable keyboard movement to pair with a mouse, which is probably the best of both worlds. The guards don't have fixed patrol routes and can start turning around unexpectedly, but their movement is ponderous, so there's enough time to react. The game encourages manipulating them with distractions instead of waiting for openings. Nevertheless, the ways to distract are very limited, and getting unlucky with a guard stuck shimmying against a wall in an undesirable spot is not uncommon. On the other hand, it is also possible to get very lucky with guard routes which will trivialise a section. Although there is no quick restart button, restarting doesn't take too long, and levels are very short. The three characters plunder the same venue at different times of day: one in the morning, one right after closing time, one at night. There is no real choice of character; rather their levels are three closely related campaigns. At first glance, they don't seem mechanically distinct from each other; although this is true to a large extent, in practice their differences do add up. Each character possesses the bread-and-butter skill of making noise on the spot to attract attention, but they differ slightly in movement, available gadget, objectives, and level layouts. One of them is after the main exhibition, so planning an efficient route around all the numerous items is essential if trying to beat the par times. In some levels a disposable, throwable gadget is provided - a noise maker, an instant teleporter, smoke bomb, or glue. There's a tiny bit of strategy to using glue because sticking guards does not hinder their vision, and being spotted causes this character to panic and become unable to steal anything until breaking line of sight. Running in a state of panic will cause the hat to drop, and it has to be retrieved in order to finish a level. There is an optional prestige objective - to steal an item from a glass display, which makes noise when broken and causes snitching visitors nearby to fetch a guard to investigate. The second character goes in without any gadget to target the alarmed lockboxes after all the visitors have left, some passages have been closed, and only the guards remain. Keys have to be stolen by hanging around a guard for a bit (bumping into them from behind is completely safe). This character is the only one who can stand behind guards or trail them closely without raising suspicion. A wide-range alarm goes off after a safe is opened, so plan for a hiding spot to quickly nip to when the guards come scrambling. The third character retrieves the remaining few masterpieces at night. This character is unable to run but is equipped with a bouncy ball for distracting guards. However, the gadget isn't disposable and has to be retrieved before heading for the exit. There are no par times for night levels, but there is a prestige objective of completing the heist completely unseen by the guards (being heard is allowed). Beating all par times unlocks "pro" times, and beating all of those unlocks "dev" times, which are tighter still. There are achievements for beating the original par times, but the two latter challenges are completely optional. Most venues have multiple floors, and the game saves the time upon arrival at a floor. The great thing is, it allows restarting from the current floor (unless quitting to hub area), and failed attempts do not count towards total time spent in the level. Bugs were very few and insignificant. The game seems to hang on blank congratulatory screens after beating dev times. In one level it is possible to break a glass display through a wall, but it is hardly an advantage. The hub gallery appears a little patchy - some paintings remain blank canvasses even after doing everything, but they aren't meant to be looked at anyway. The menus could be retouched a little to better indicate the currently selected item because it can be difficult to tell. On that note, a toggle for black and white line drawing graphics can be found in the settings, and it is pretty neat.
