A completely vanilla beat'em up, with as many Pros as it has Cons. Get on sale and play with a friend or solo on normal difficulty. On Normal: the game is fun, not too hard, a bit dull at times, but keeps the core of the game fun. On Hard: the game is frustrating, not well designed and chore that is not fun to go through unless you are a masochist. Better beat'em up include: Streets of Rage 1,2,3 & 4, TMNT: Shredder's revenge, Mother Russia Bleeds, Castle Crashers, Shank 1&2, Gauntlet(By Arrowhead). Pros: Your combos have juggle-ability like in other good fighters You actually have a ranged weapon with limited ammo Rage mode helps with frustrating fights since you cannot take damage and get a significant damage boost The music & level design slaps There are on-rails levels to give you break from the monotonous button mashing You get to pick up ammo for your ranged weapon and a machine gun in certain sections to spice up the gameplay. Cons: There are cheap bosses. When you have no ammo and low health, the spinning bayblade attack that some bosses do is too fast and tracks? With no block option you are always loosing in some way. Other games make these kinds of moves fast but not tracking or slow but tracking. This game chose both hard options and makes it a nightmare to kill these bosses without Rage or Ammo. Bosses have infinite goons. Not a problem in itself, but their respawn speed is too fast, as soon as you kill 1 of them, the moment you hit the boss with a combo you get a spawned good with a gun to shoot or break your combo, and that is if the boss doesn't already break out of your combo with an armored attack or explosion. The result is a lot of frustrating moments, when the solution you should be able to do is kill the goons, hit the boss, rinse & repeat. The melee weapons are slow and lack damage. Normally in these games, melee weapons that you pick up have low durability and do a lot of damage. Weapons here are slow, knock-down enemies, killing your combos, have no durability, but get destoyed if you drop them 2-3 times? That is confusing and unnecessary. I'm better of not using them unless are 4-5 enemies stacked together, which I can very cheaply kill by hitting all of them with the weapon over and over and over again. Some achievements straight up mislead you. The kill 100, 500 achievements do not specify that you have to complete them in 1 run. Which makes 100% completion a chore. Hard difficulty is not balanced: In harder modes in other fighting games you increase the HP and/or numbers of enemies as well as maybe their damage. The problem with this game is that someone thought it was a good idea to increase their movement speed, decision making speed of enemies as well. Resulting in you taking so much damage so fast, that picking any character with lower speed is a death sentence to your combos and life. Survival mode is badly designed: Normally in survival mode you start off easy and slowly spawn enemies of lower tiers ramping it up every few enemies killed or perhaps in waves, making each wave increase in size and enemy tiers and/or strength. Again someone decided that having the same spawning time as the boss's goons is a good idea. Resulting in slower character being swarmed and having no way to killing a single goon, before 2-3 more spawn, walk behind you by the time you finish your 1 combo and give you backshots. You need to play higher speed characters to even survive.

The Take Over: The Graphics: The game graphics is nice and very detailed. Not much to say about it. It’s refreshing that the game avoids low-poly art, a style that’s become overused in modern games, often making them feel indistinguishable. (I am not referring to PixeArt, PixelAre will always be amazing) :) Graphics are somewhat realistic in the game and comics style between the stages which is nice touch and add a good nostalgic feel to the fans of comics in the era from 80’s and 90’s The graphics in the game just works and do what it’s supposed to do. It’s sharp, its clear and colorful. The models are detailed and this is more than enough for a beat em up game. The sound: The sound is nice and the punches are strong and you feel the energy when you start giving punches and kick. I have some small notice here and there for the sound FX, like example I am not sure about the slicing sound FX of the sword and some other minor nitpicking. However I love the sound of machineguns and pistols. The Music: Great tunes - mixture between modern synthwave and powerchord rocking tunes. Also its draw heavy inspiration from Streets Of Rage (more on than that later). It’s good, nothing super memorable or hit reward quality but is catchy and fit the atmosphere of the every level very well. The Gameplay: Here is my biggest complain. While the control and pacing of the game is great, precise and very tight the overall gameplay is not something to remember with. You have new combo mechanics. Usually in beat um games you press one and the same button and combos will be done automatically. In some way here is somewhat similar but not so. If you combine different punches and kicks you will get different combos also combined with up and down on D-Pad you will get good variety of combos. This is very nice touch and kind of unique to the game. Also you have two power meters to feel up: Special and Rage. They both have different roles one of them just blow up entire screen and the other make you faster, stronger and invincible for short period of time. Also you have ranged weapon (shotgun, pistol or revolver depend on character you play with) which use ammo. But not all is that great. Beside that there is nothing much more to the gameplay. Weapons are scarce and very few and you never feel the need to use one. Often the weapons will be just worst than just your kicks and punches. Overall not a bad gameplay but something is missing. Theme and inspiration: Here is my second big critique for the game. It’s heavily inspired if not even copied from Streets Of Rage 2. Basically this game feels like remake: 1. Main characters are almost identical (excluding the military guy) to the characters or Streets of Rage. 2. They are police officer which go vigilante to save a little girl. 3. This time the blond guy (Axel) and the lady in the red dress (Blaze) heck she even have almost the same mole as Blaze, they are couple and have a girl that is kidnapped and they go to rescue mission to save her. 4. Many levels are basically copied from Streets Of Rage 2 – First level street, the bar (almost identical) , the arena (this almost identical), the ship, the beach , the island – this all levels and themes are lifted directly from Streets Of Rage 2 and not only that, but the entire atmosphere is and feel like Streets Of Rage 2. And I cant say this is necessary a good thing. Of course SoR2 is an amazing game, be inspired by a game is one thing, but trying to copy so many stuff it’s way too obvious. Even the lead character have almost identical special moves, kicks and throws like Axel from Streets Of Rage. Verdict: The Takeover is nice throw back to the good old formula of beat em up genre. It’s nice game to just chillout and mash few buttons and listen to some nice tunes. It’s not masterpiece but it’s a decent game that if you are fan of old school brawlers – you should buy it. However I cant recommend the game on full price. Without much to unlock and not much content after beating the main story there is not much reason to return to the game again. Playing on harder or challenges is not very fun overall. 6.5/10

Okay so this game kind of kicks ass. From the get go, the core combat gamefeel is quite satisfying, as enemies make huge 'kCHUNK' noises when you hit them, and when they bash into each other or level objects. Your hits all feel pretty satisfying, and you can get some fairly extended combos without trying too hard. Some enemies will block your basic attacks but nothing that feels annoying, only meant to get you to grab or reposition occasionally. Enemies in this game have a bit more health than the average beat 'em up, but there are fewer of them to compensate. I initially wondered if this somehow made this whatever the beat 'em up equivalent to a 'euroshmup' is, but after playing for a bit longer, I don't think it's that, though the general ease of difficulty and 3D graphics could convince you otherwise. While I'm far more likely to give a positive review to a game which is too easy, rather than too difficult, it's not like the gameplay was free; stage two, for example, ends with a projectile boss that could very easily spell death if you didn't properly manage your resources or know about z-axis shenanigans--and even then, I still took a few hits from his goons shooting me from the sidelines. What convinced me to quit out and write a positive review more or less immediately was the driving stage. Mechanically, it's basically just an autoscrolling driving shmup... but the soundtrack/song that plays is a straight Initial D style eurobeat song, and it's pretty damn good, from what I could hear over the shooting and tires squealing. You can also do sick jumps off ramps... yeah. I normally don't care for autoscrollers in games, but this one hit in just the right way. While I still have a hard time getting over the in-game art-style, and while I wish the menus were more modernized and less clunky (you can't change options during a run, the control binds are a separate meta-menu, etc.), this is still a pretty fantastic feeling experience even if it's a bit light on the challenge on its default difficulty. There are difficulty levels, so this probably isn't an issue if you tweak it up... oh, and on top of all of this, the game also has comic-book style stop motion cutscenes between levels, and they're very cool, including the voice acting for all the characters, which is weirdly high quality for a game in this genre. You also get a handgun by default, so you can just straight up shoot fools trying to punch you, and in certain parts you even get a minigun temporarily. Like, what? Oh yeah, and the super move you get for charging your bar is an absolutely overpowered multi-hit screen clear that basically OHKOs anything on screen besides bosses. The only mechanical thing I would change about this game is adding a quick wake-up feature for when you're knocked down, and making there some way to use your special moves without taking health damage... the recoverable bar thing that Streets of Rage 4 does would be perfect. As is, I don't mind the trade-off, as the specials are sick as hell, but it sucks to have one built into a normal combo string that ALWAYS takes your health down, so you're always skulking around looking for food in garbage barrels. Oh yeah, and despite this game having classic nostalgic beat 'em up stuff that's usually annoying, such as motorbike enemies and rolling barrels, the barrels are super well-telegraphed and deal barely any damage, and the motorcycle enemies are very easy to deal with--the game even teaches you in one of the levels that you can just stand back and shoot them with your hand gun, then let the explosive chain reaction do clean up. This is a good game. Very refreshing to find something so playable in a genre that, despite very common fundamentals, feels like it can be a bit hit or miss in terms of the final gameplay experience. Would highly recommend this one, even more so if you're into the 3D thing (and the game makes good use of it, like using it for fun camera angles and object zoom ins--it's just not my cup of tea).

Clearly inspired by Sega's Streets of Rage series, a solid game with good visuals and fun moment to moment gameplay. Sometimes the controls don't feel as responsive as I'd like, and the music can be a bit generic. Otherwise a good game well worth the purchase if you like side-scrolling brawlers.
