You can't save the whole world. It's going to be eaten by a mythological demon with the head of a fish. But as a puppet that absorbs all it touches, you can try to rescue as much of Earth's greatness as you can before the end arrives. In the beginning, you roam the Earth, capable of absorbing only the tiniest of objects.

A less polished eat 'em up than Feeding Frenzy 2, but one that I ended up finding a little more to appreciate nonetheless. The Wonderful End of the World is basically just, what if a Katamari game was made in Unity and had you controlling a standard character controller instead of a ball, and the answer is, it's still fun. This marks another game I decided to play in one session on a whim, a task made even funnier by the way there's an achievement for completely restarting the game upon completion and beating it all over again in a single sitting, but it's not like I had a bad time doing so either. In particular I'm charmed by the aesthetic of this, it feels extremely late 2000s indie in how slapdash and rough everything feels, albeit in a way that doesn't ever come across as actively frustrating. I'm also fond of how they ensured that each level had a different feel to it, both gameplay wise and in its scenery, not really hitting any points of repetition, as even the stages with similar types of scenery would be structured in a way to feel very different. Whether it was by having hidden clusters of small objects or making things really sparse to ensure that every pickup felt significant, there was a constant sense of needing some semblance of routing, especially with how the scoring works in this compared to a standard Katamari. On a typical Katamari game, the strategy tends to be running through clusters of smaller objects as quickly as possible and then learning to pivot to the bigger stuff ASAP. Wonderful End of the World flips this idea into one that feels more focused on prioritisation, as every item is worth the same number of points, meaning that being thorough with those smaller objects before you get too big to be able to have them register as pickups is vital, lest you leave yourself in a position where you can no longer get the highest rank on that given level without restarting. This especially came into play with the internet cafe level being such a tight game of optimisation to properly complete that it took me well over an hour to accomplish, making constant micro-adjustments to my pathing and inching slightly closer with each try. It's strange that it's one of the first levels in the game that has this sort of difficulty to it and that everything else is easier, but it doesn't really detract from how much fun that hour was, to the point where I wish the rest of the game would keep throwing similarly difficult challenges my way. Despite wishing that more of the game were as fun to me as that opening hour or so, this is still a perfectly good time, one that feels like a time capsule of this era of indie sensibilities, being perfectly content with putting together a rough execution of a cool idea and that being all it took for it to be a lovely time, even if it's very what you see is what you get. 6/10

Discovered this game around the time of its release, maybe 2009. It solidified in my memories, and I finally replayed it. Still a great small game. Better than We Love Katamari and cheaper. Controls are great, as well as the soundtrack.

Very fun little game, and it scratched the Katamari itch I feel every once in a while. While this wont be my favorite thing I played this year, I'm happy I played it. Be forewarned, it's locked at a resolution, and as far as I can tell, there is no way to change it. If this isn't a dealbreaker for you, try it out.
