Titanium Court on Steam

A critically-acclaimed surreal masterpiece. This is how AP Thomson would describe Titanium Court if not for the curse he bears as punishment for his hubris. Instead he can only use the crudest of terms and so he describes Titanium Court as "a clever ploy to trick gamers into reading my book." Yuck!

This is the single best use of Midsummer Night's Dream I've seen outside of a theater. The writing is sharp. The humor is absurd. The overall vibe is mischievous and delightful. And I cannot tell anyone what's in this game without sounding like SNL's Stefon describing New York City's hottest club. I absolutely love it. 10/10. Play this game!
TL;DR: Love '17776'? Love 'Field of Dreams'? You will love Titanium Court. Part of the magic (and even thesis) of the game is that the work that goes into analyzing media seemingly depletes the joy that your experience of the medium first brought you; even saying this much could be deadly to a player's internalization of everything going on due to our 'mortal' penchant for reading the sign as the signified. It's so much easier to take in something like this review than it is to take the time in experiencing the medium itself. Continue at your own peril. What about if the work is self aware; that the consumable knows it's being consumed? One day, the player started playing. One day, the player will stop playing. The game (specifically, certain characters as vehicles for this sentiment) continually wrestles with the knowledge that its existence hinges on keeping the player interested. At the same time, the player's interest is what drives the force that leads to the culmination of the game. 'Discovery leads to depletion'. The act of playing is a kind of burning of a candle. We enjoy what the experience brings us (light, odor, warmth) while we interact with it. We knowingly light a candle in spite of the fact that it will, one day, reach a point that it has expended itself. Players, as humans, ARE that candle! What we do while we burn brings about the order, the fuel, that allows the fire to keep going. The act of our burning is entropic at the same time that it is orderly. What does this have to do with sports? We use the same word to describe baseball and the theatre (A Midsummer Night's Dream contributes much of the backdrop of the game's main conflict, including some titular wordplay in 'Titanium Court') as we do this piece of software: 'play'. Play has distinct beginning and endings, but we still love to experience play even if we know that our experience will end. That love does something that displaces our fear of things ending, no matter how undeniable the ending is. In truth, we love THAT certain things end. We love when our team wins. We love when our team's destruction finally stops in a loss. Our joy comes from the medium, literally that which is in-between. Our grief (the end of love?) does not come from limitation, as the court itself represents boundary, rules, code. We could not play without the court, the stage, the programming. Does it matter what the bookends are, so long as the lines are drawn? If we keep playing with the stage as metaphor, the inscription of lines is core to an actor's action in the same way that lines of code are. The game also pays considerable attention to the sacred, literally set-apart, nature of space(s). Like stars, diamonds of pixels take the role of constructor and separator in the game's delightfully stripped down 'four-color-as-well-as-nothingness' 8-bit (4-bit?) design. Each dot of Titanium Court is singularly significant and deliberately chosen or omitted in contrast to the games industry's seemingly infinite march closer to graphical reality. This is further heightened by the abilities of machines to create, iterate, and deploy themselves and their works towards the same asymptote. If the world is characterized by the eternal march of countless squares, sacredness comes from limitation and respect for things which have been left as void, empty. Signs can only be signs if they stand out, and TC's usage of pixels and color is OUTSTANDING (get it? :) ). Leaving the court means the game has stopped, at least for the player. Even then, the nothingness outside of the court is what gives the somethingness of the court its identity (even if that identity is found through a jump in time to be a wholly unrecognizable titanic clockwork skull-monastery; memento mori, indeed). You, as the player, transgress that division. The court is entered, and the stage and field are taken. You are something transcendent, even profane. You have no lines. ...But you still abide by the rules and limits of the game's creator, AP Thomson. Willingly! Enthusiastically! Striving-ly or comfortably! There is undoubtedly so much more that Thomson crafted and considered within the game, even (especially?) when he, still bound by the space of the game, bends his respectfully spartan audio-visual interface to its absolute limit with a song about Pacific Salmon. What are doing with your life? What does it mean for you to be successful? Will you recognize yourself when you look backwards and forwards? Wanna play?
A bafflingly insane game that manages to surpass and subvert my expectations with every single button press. This game manages to be unbelievably insane while telling a fantastic story with twists and turns that never feel unfair or out-of-nowhere. I had a run that was going very poorly and upon limping my way to the boss fight, the game paused itself and the "host" of the game walked onto the screen and gave me an offer. He told me that he would give me a free pass, skipping the fight but calling it a win in exchange for me sitting and watching a musical performance by the developer, performing a song about how pacific salmon have a big orgy and die. I chose yes. The game then took away my fast-forward and skip buttons and I had to sit and watch a 6 minute musical performance where the developer came onto the screen, gave a 2 minute preamble, and then played a song on the acoustic guitar about how salmon have a big orgy and die.
In the time I have spent playing Titanium Court, I am no longer certain who is playing whom. This is a game that watches you back. You start a run thinking you understand the rules, and then the rules start commenting on your choices. You lose, and losing turns out to be a thing the game expected, maybe even wanted. You unlock something new and cannot tell if it is a mechanic, a joke, or a confession. The trick Titanium Court pulls, and pulls repeatedly, is that there is no membrane between the systems and the story. Every mechanic is also a sentence. Every sentence is also a move on the board. You think you are min-maxing resources and then you realize the resource was a metaphor three turns ago and now you are in too deep to back out gracefully. I keep wanting to describe specific moments and stopping myself, because the game is constructed so that telling you anything is the same as taking something from you. Other reviewers have figured this out too. We are all standing around the same secret nodding at each other. What I will say is this. Underneath the absurdity, the match-three faerie nonsense, the cast of characters who all seem to be in on something you are not, there is a game that takes itself seriously in exactly the right places. It is funny until it is not. It is silly until it quietly is not silly at all. And then it goes back to being silly, and you are left holding the weight of whatever just happened. I do not fully understand Titanium Court. I suspect Titanium Court would be disappointed in me if I did.
