Enterprise Networking: The Video Game. If that sounds appealing to you, then this game *is* probably for you. That said... I feel like the game is currently in a weird limbo spot where you are basically expected to already know some aspects from the real world (like DHCP, DNS, and the basic names of the different components), but other aspects are completely fantasy (hardware addresses use integers rather than MAC addresses, network addresses are just strings routed on prefixes rather than IP addresses with CIDR). I can see *why* those simplifications were made, but it's never really explained what's real and what's made up, nor are the real-world concepts really *taught* by the tutorial.

I am a real life network engineer (Cisco CCNP + Aruba ACP) A friend of mine suggested for me to try this game out to see how realistic it actually is compared to the real world and here are my thoughts on it as a whole (NOTE- these points below are purely my personal opinion based on real life experience): What the game is great at doing, at a glance - If you aren't actually tech savvy, but perhaps you may someday desire to know what it's like to work a real IT job, this game does a great job at replicating the actual mentality behind what kind of job pressure/stressful situations you have to deal with on a day by day basis, being that if you fail at your position then the game is over, your job is over, and perhaps even your career is over. It also does well in making you think about how you would approach different troubleshooting scenarios in a critical way, which actually translates surprisingly very well to the real world. It can also do well at teaching the language of network troubleshooting, without actually being fully technical or in-depth. What this game is not - This game is not a fully realistic representation of the real world, the same logic applied within at this stage of it's development CANNOT be applied in a real world scenario, and is definitely NOT resume worthy in any way. If you are serious about going into an actual IT career, this game may teach you mental preparedness but it will definitely not educate you properly on real world best practices and terminology. What isn't completely accurate - I've found that there are limitations (which may actually be intentional) to how you can configure your topology. For instance, you can't have multiple default routes on a router, and you can't route traffic from one device to multiple ports on the router in this game whereas in the real world these limitations don't exist, nor does the device prevent you from inputting those configurations regardless if they would actually work or not. In my mind, a bigger challenge here would be to add more functionality to routers/firewalls that would allow for easier mistakes to happen, but maybe as a 'challenge' mode. Additionally, I'd be interested to see if switch loops could occur in this game as well, so that the player would have to consider spanning-tree. My biggest criticism of this game - Some of the general network builds feel very cookie cutter in a way that you feel forced to build everything one way or another without room or flexibility to experiment with different topology configurations, and the topology that you are forced to work with seems somewhat unrealistic when it comes to real world best practices. All and all, I would love to see some better refinement with regards to the network devices/components, such as having fully managed switches or L3 switches (switches that are capable of performing router functions), possibly even VPN tunnels with the firewalls, or inter-vlan routing on an L3 switch. Overall opinion - It's a game that has the potential to introduce people who may not be tech savvy, or people who are interested in pursuing an IT career to the kind of situations and activities they might end up dealing with in a real life job. With some refinement, it could become an even better example of the real thing and could even become educational in a way that could teach people about networking or IT without actually having in-depth tech knowledge. If this sort of thing is what you are interested in, then I would recommend giving this game a try. Also, this game has a great soundtrack as well.

in less than a full week of owning this game, i have already put a full work week of my free time into it and convinced a few others to try it. help. this is like all the fun and pressures of network engineering without the direct attitude of end users. bro literally gamified packet tracer and I am thoroughly impressed at how addictive it is. +: Really well designed language for network administration, gets the core fundamentals you would need for something akin to a basic packet tracer lab without getting too bogged down in the details. Very nicely set up tutorial too. Decently difficult, but with options that let you play it without the time pressures, if you plan to approach it like a masochistic zen garden. the physics sim is equal parts frustrating and amusing, net positive. i am scared to turn on collisions while moving objects, i have a hard enough time keeping it looking nice as is. - [with redeeming factors]: little messed up to make sftp access rely on a secretariat proposition that you may or may not get, when you could end up with some malware to clean out that requires it. should be a default command imo, generally feels a *little* clunky, but it is also early access, and given that, it's pretty damn good. might need to mess with some settings but i feel like clicking and dragging across the screen multiple times to get all the way across a floor shouldn't be the most efficient way across. Kinda adds to the difficulty, kinda feels a little annoying when WASD could just scoot a little better. (Update: Man dude i could afford to read settings for once in my life. apparently there's already settings for this.) The documentation does leave a little to be desired. I think the guides so far have been helpful in bridging that gap, but I am a little torn on this; as someone who works IT, having to navigate an environment with documentation that misses certain nuances - and searching other people's solutions to do so - feels a lot more realistic than having said nuances explained. While I feel like it could be better set up, I don't know that I would *want* it to be. It seems to be just good enough to operate. shop interface does feel a little clunky, but it honestly kind of adds to the pressures. I just think the shopping cart could be a bit less "form" based and a bit more "objects in a list" based - seems weird to have to place two purchase orders really quick to get different color cables of the same length in the same shipment - but it doesn't necessarily take away from the game for me. bear in mind i'm not *too* far in, so i'm wondering if some of this stuff is simply unlocked later? ~ : cable hooks. pls. plsssss. cable spools for custom length cables [up to a max length defined by the channel medium] (Update: i never looked at lab mode lmao, they already have this. keeping the rest of the feedback though) maybe with a semi difficult - or at least somewhat time consuming - minigame involving terming the cable correct on both sides. Most importantly, *with the ability to do it wrong*. imagine the pressures of having to frantically cut off the crimped RJ45 end on an already-almost-too-short cable and trying to pin out another connector while SLA is failing on a different floor. better explanation in docs on how connecting machines directly to others works/the limitations on it. i might just need to experiment but i feel like a little more info could be given for that up front, given the versatility that seems to exist with them. maybe a sadistic ask, but cable damage. ever yank an RJ45 out of the wall? feels reasonable to break a cable if it comes out in a way it's not supposed to. i highly recommend. i'm having to convince myself to not play it so i can do other things. it's damn good.
