Whether you're a fan of the Turbo Kid movie or not, if you're looking for a retro-style metroidvania to play, you're in for a real treat here. This game essentially blends together the Mad Max concept with a BMX-riding Mega Man/Samus to create a humorous (but also dark) and well-paced action adventure. While it isn't necessary to have seen the movie (the story is self-contained but takes place after the events of the movie), it does include some direct references which provide some context to Turbo Kid's backstory. All you really need to know is that the movie and game takes place in an alternate, retro/sci-fi, post-apocalyptic 1997. Outerminds nailed the tone here and incorporated all of the essential pieces of the movie into some clever mechanics and gameplay elements; most notably, his BMX bike. The bike is a fun and satisfying means of traversal that definitely sets Turbo Kid apart from other metroidvanias. Even though fast travel warp points can be discovered across the game's sprawling map, using the bike makes traveling to them and backtracking to find secrets and power-ups much less tedious. Since you get a speed boost by performing tricks, it felt rewarding to improve my bike skills during my play-through. There are even a few time and trick trials that can be found throughout the world that feel a bit like something out of Excitebike or Trials HD! The combat is not overly complicated or deep and feels like a mix between Mega Man and Metroid/Axiom Verge, but with a machete for melee capabilities (my favorite thing about the machete was being able to deflect most projectiles with a well-timed swing). After finding additional weapons for your Turbo Blaster, selecting them is handled like Axiom Verge (by a radial menu using the right stick). The different weapons are fun to use and useful for various situations, and I never got tired of witnessing the grotesquely gratifying explosion of blood and guts whenever I'd blast a wasteland raider with a fully charged shot. You can also slot in passive bonuses as you find Cartridges throughout the wasteland which can allow you to mix and match depending on your play-style, which I enjoyed experimenting with. While the game has a few sections on the difficult side, Outerminds were very generous with the amount of save points sprinkled throughout the map (which also fully heal Turbo Kid whenever they're used), so as long as you save whenever you come across one, dying never feels very punishing. The game is meaty but not too long, and there are only a handful of boss fights, but they were extremely well designed and satisfying. There's a lot to discover in the world and exploration is suitably rewarded. The pixel-art throughout the game's various biomes is colorful and varied; it's obvious that great care was put into the game's visual language. Everything was always interesting to look at, and the post-apocalyptic world and characters of Turbo Kid was fully realized here. The atmosphere and mood of each area really sucked me into the game, and everything looked great on both my 77inch OLED TV and on my Steam Deck. I will say that I noticed some minor hitching/stuttering occasionally, but it was never anything that felt detrimental to my enjoyment of the experience. I can't get through this review without mentioning the incredible soundtrack by Le Matos (who also created the Turbo Kid movie soundtrack). It really ties the entire package together by replicating the vibe from the movie - and most importantly - it's a treat to listen to. I also got a kick out of finding all of the collectible "Cassette Tapes" which allow you to listen to the music tracks from the movie while you play. To conclude: this is the movie/videogame tie-in that I never knew I wanted. You can really tell that a lot of care and attention to detail went into this game to make it as "Turbo Kid" as possible without sacrificing great gameplay like so many other movie adaptation/tie-ins usually fall victim to. It seems like there was almost no marketing budget for this when it launched, which is a shame, because it deserves more recognition for being the great retro metroidvania (retroidvania?) adventure that it turned out to be.

A game... unseen. A hidden gem that needs more attention from everyone! Note: It is a metroidvania game! From just playing not even a full hour, I can already tell this is a really great game that wasn't rushed in development or pushed out earlier than intended from some CEO higher up. Funny thing is.. I wanted to look up PewDiePie's old game Legend of the Brofist from like 2014/2015 and since that game was a hit back then, I was curious what Outerminds Inc. has done since and then I saw this game, looked at it, read about it and wishlisted it! A few weeks passed and I bought it! Now that I finally have the game and have played ⅔ of the beginning, just getting to know the character and the early story of the game. I have to say that I love the artstyle, loooove it! The feeling when you play and the execution of the animations and how you interact with the environment is eyecatching, makes you smile. Gameplay wise... the background is painted and so is the foreground but they are alive thanks to the great animations, which brings the whole world to life in a really nice way. Game also offers some really nice and refreshing mechanics and here is where you can tell that they put a good amount of effort into the game. The animations within the game are brutal in the way that they are gorey but they are so satisfying, even when you die. Just the animation when you save the game is really nice. I can't lie when I say that I'm looking forward to see what this game has to tell and how the story unfolds. You most definitely can tell from the gameplay and in several of the mechanics of the game that they had alot of fun in the process of making this game and it has alot of thought put into it! I do recommend the game and if you're a casual gamer reading this then you should check it out, give it a chance. If you like the metroidvania genre of games then this is a must buy. End of story.

Excellent in all departments. Really sharp controls and metroidvania design. The BMX bike is a very cool addition. The movie is free to watch on tubi or plex, and it's also fun. Great pixel art. Plenty of secrets. Overall just great stuff.

one of the best games of its kind I have ever played. The crazy thing, this game tells more about turbo kid then all other content on the series combined. Find all the rooms, it will tell you just how much hart and soul went into this game. I say again "A rare gem in a sea of fools treasure" glad I found it.
