A solid 7/10 for us! It's rather short, so I'd wait for a sale. We completed it in just about two hours. We may go back and swap places, but it'll have to be later down the line so we forget the puzzles. I may not have bought the game if I had known it was this short, but I won't force a refund even though I could. Doesn't seem fair. This game is more for amateur or intermediate puzzle solvers I think. The puzzles were mostly pretty easy. The only thing that would be holding you back is how good you are at communicating with your partner. I liked the variety in different puzzles and how unique they felt. The only one we had to brute force was the TV antennas part.

Amazing short co-op puzzle games. The art style is top-notch, and the puzzles are very intuitive, unique, and challenging without being too frustrating. It took my friend and me about 6 hours to complete 100% of the achievements.

Play as one of two investigators: Detective Old Dog (actual government name) - a man with a wildly varying array of accents, or Ally - a woman who becomes more and more Scottish as time goes on, which is an understandable stress response. The game is fairly short (it took us about two hours) and the story lacks some... polish, let's put it that way. But the puzzles are fun and engaging without being frustratingly difficult. I've played my fair share of coop puzzle games and had quite a fun time with this one. It's an inexpensive way to have a good time solving riddles with a friend, so if you're into that you can't go wrong with this game.

Unboxing the Cryptic Killer, developed and published by Eleven Puzzles, is a distinctive cooperative puzzle game that draws players into a tense and atmospheric mystery. Released in 2023, it has quickly gained recognition for its innovative gameplay and engaging narrative that centers around two detectives trapped in a deadly game orchestrated by a cunning antagonist known as the Cryptic Killer. The core of the experience lies in its emphasis on teamwork and communication, requiring two players to collaborate closely as they solve intricate puzzles to progress through the story. The gameplay is built around a split-screen setup where each player holds a different piece of the puzzle. Neither player can see the entire picture, which means they must exchange detailed descriptions and insights to decipher codes, patterns, and clues. This mechanic not only fosters a deep sense of partnership but also heightens tension and immersion, as players rely on each other’s observations to move forward. The puzzles are thoughtfully designed to be challenging without feeling overwhelming, blending logical deduction with creative problem-solving. This balance ensures that the experience remains accessible to a wide range of players while still offering satisfying moments of discovery and achievement. Visually, Unboxing the Cryptic Killer adopts a noir-inspired aesthetic, with hand-drawn environments that evoke the moody atmosphere of classic detective stories. The art style complements the narrative’s dark themes and adds a layer of visual intrigue that enhances the overall mood. Additionally, the inclusion of an in-game notebook feature allows players to jot down clues and thoughts, which is essential for keeping track of complex information and aiding in collaborative reasoning. These design choices contribute to a cohesive experience where gameplay and storytelling reinforce one another. Despite its strengths, the game is not without its flaws. Some players have reported technical issues, particularly crashes in later levels, which can interrupt the flow of the experience. The game’s relatively short length—comprising only five levels—may also leave some players wanting more, especially given how engaging the core mechanics are. Another limitation is the lack of local couch co-op support, meaning both players must own the game to play together, which could be a barrier for some households. Minor audio problems, such as issues with Bluetooth headphones, have also been noted, though these do not detract significantly from the overall experience. In conclusion, Unboxing the Cryptic Killer offers a fresh take on cooperative puzzle games by placing communication and collaboration at the forefront of its design. Its compelling story, atmospheric presentation, and clever puzzle construction make it a standout choice for players who enjoy working together to unravel mysteries. While it has room for improvement in terms of technical polish and content depth, the game succeeds in delivering a memorable and engaging experience. Fans of cooperative puzzle-solving and narrative-driven adventures will find much to appreciate here, and with the sequel already announced, the future looks promising for this intriguing franchise.
