Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 276: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ (8/10) I was not expecting this one to be this good. Vampire: The Masquerade – Night Road is an interactive fiction game that does so many things right it kinda embarrassed some of the “bigger” IF games I’ve played lately. Clean UI, deep mechanics, strong writing, and a delightfully brooding tone? Honestly, I thought I’d be in and out in a few hours—nope. I got pulled all the way in. 🧛 Pros: [*] Surprisingly fresh and elegant UI. I love that it doesn’t use percentages for skills—instead, you get dots, and also numbers under the hood. It’s sleek, thematic, and more immersive than seeing “Persuasion: 68%.” Makes it feel like you’re building a character, not just min-maxing a spreadsheet. [*] Inventory and money system are better than they need to be. This game followed an RPG path of having an inventory and resources. You have cars, outfits, tools, upgrades, and cash to manage, and it’s actually satisfying to plan your loadout. One of the earliest choices is having about $1,000 and needing to choose between a gun, sword, new suit, laptop, or three differing cars. [*] In-game encyclopedia is a gift. For a beginner like me, it was super fun to read through 10-20 pages of lore, where everything was clearly explained. It’s dense, but it made the world feel alive. [*]Dark, gloomy, and atmospheric in all the right ways. The tone is spot on. It captures the feeling of being a vampire constantly teetering between hunger, politics, and personal doom. The writing has a weariness to it, like everyone’s just barely keeping it together, and you’re no exception. It’s so good at making you feel powerful and hunted at the same time. [*] A strong, meaty length with excellent pacing. It’s long. Like, “book-sized but still readable” long. But there’s no bloat. Every major section introduces something new—whether it’s a target, a city, or a moral dilemma. By the end, I genuinely felt like I’d gone on a journey. And I didn’t spot a single typo. Which is rare, even in shorter games. 🌒 Cons: [*] Romance is light-touch, at best. There are romance options, but they’re more subplot than centerpiece. If you’re hoping for slow-burn seduction, power couple politics, or deep emotional arcs... you might be left a little cold. [*] Lore dump risk is real. The in-game codex helps, but if you're completely new to Vampire: The Masquerade, the sheer volume of terminology, sects, disciplines, and backstabbing might be overwhelming. You’re kinda tossed into the deep end. [*]Lots of stats, maybe too many. You’ve got attributes, disciplines, skills, money, gear, hunger, humanity... It’s rich, but if you’re trying to plan an achievement-perfect run or even just replay to try new routes, it can feel like there are too many invisible levers behind the scenes. Very easy to miss outcomes you were sure you’d locked in. [*]Hard to parse cause and effect for achievements. Speaking of: If you're achievement hunting? Good luck. The branching narrative is great for immersion but brutal for tracking what choice led to what ending or unlock. A dream for roleplayers, a bit of a nightmare for completists. Great stuff, basically a small campaign of VTM that you can play many times with different results. It's almost single-player rpg in it's own manner, you get a pretty good character sheet and you can actually feel becoming more powerful. If you know the setting, it's a great treat, a really nice representation of the campy vibe that VTM gives. Just put some Rik Shaffer in the background and go wild.

For real, " this is the closest alternative to playing "Bloodlines 1" yet again ". Amazing game, a MUST PLAY for any V:TM fans out there! "Night Road" barely even feels like choose-your-own-adventure game, more like full-fledged RPG in a text form. You have everything - different Clans, their apropriate Disciplines, stats, skills, inventory system, relationships, clothes, cars, haven... it's incredible. Treat yourself, buy "Night Road", play "Night Road", thank me later.

If you're a fan of the World of Darkness, this game is such a great in-depth dive into it. I love that each clan actually does have changes to the way you're interacted with. I'll be hones though, I have played this game a ton, and each time I still have to look up what the cars look like lol.

Just finished and giving this a rare 10/10 score, as I experienced no bugs or errors and got my perfect ending. I played it raw - no looking things up, no guides, nothing. I went in with a blank slate and glad I did as the tension of knowing I had to deal with every choice created a lot of excitement and tension. No reloads and no going back to chose something else. I was nervous I might not get the ending I want but thankfully I got it. So, my score reflects my personal experience with the game and isn't based solely on its mechanics. I.e. its more a subjective score vs. an objective one. The game itself I went into thinking it would be ho-hum. I had just finished two play through of the original VTM Bloodlines and wanted more VTM/vampire game play. I was skeptical of how good a text only game could be but I was bored and sometimes it pays to try something different. In this case it paid off. I was up until 2:3 0am at night unable to pull myself away from the story. I like that it has a character sheet with stats, attributes, and skills that all go up based on both usage and how you spend some of the experience points your earn doing things. There is tracking of reputation with 3 factions, simple inventory, tracking of the masquerade and humanity, money, and an excellent journal you could access at any time to get help. I also appreciated that when trying to make a choice in dialogue, with skill/attribute influence you could easily jump to your stats page to see your points, then return. I did play with storyteller mode on as it said that is how VTM is played and I preferred it that way. The writing was top-notch. I wasn't expecting anything too good for a game like this, it can be hard to write a good story when there are so many choices and paths, but the writing was excellent and pulled me right in. I listened to some dark occult trance music while playing which really added to the atmosphere. I also liked the few pieces of artwork of some of the characters in the game. I played the basic game, no add-ons, and can highly recommend it. I also liked that I had freedom to chose who I fed on and was able to play as a gay vampire, who also got to do a little romance on the side - although I want to stress that was not the focus of the game by any means. Just a nice side option and a surprise I hadn't expected. Anyhow really fun well done game IMO.
