Weapon of Choice DX is a retro-inspired side-scrolling shooter developed and published by Mommy’s Best Games that transforms classic arcade run-and-gun action into a frantic and wildly imaginative science-fiction experience. Drawing clear inspiration from legendary action titles of the past while adding its own strange identity, the game combines explosive combat, bizarre alien enemies, branching level design, and a colorful hand-drawn art style into a chaotic but highly entertaining package. Rather than simply recreating the feel of old-school shooters, Weapon of Choice DX embraces absurdity and nonstop momentum to create an experience that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly unpredictable. The story takes place during a catastrophic alien invasion where humanity faces extinction at the hands of grotesque mutated creatures spreading across the planet. In response, a team of heavily armed operatives is deployed to stop the invasion using advanced weapons and experimental technology. The narrative itself is intentionally exaggerated and campy, functioning mainly as a backdrop for the intense action and strange science-fiction imagery. The game never takes itself too seriously, embracing over-the-top scenarios and bizarre enemy designs that fit perfectly with its arcade-inspired personality. One of the game’s strongest features is its large roster of playable characters. Instead of limiting players to a single protagonist, the game gradually introduces new operatives during missions, each equipped with unique weapons, attacks, and movement abilities. Some characters rely on rapid-fire plasma weaponry while others focus on explosive attacks or unusual experimental devices. Every new character dramatically changes the flow of combat, encouraging players to experiment with different playstyles and strategies throughout the campaign. This system also adds replayability because players can revisit levels using different characters to discover alternate approaches and hidden routes. The combat is fast, chaotic, and constantly demanding. Enemies attack aggressively from multiple directions while the screen fills with projectiles, explosions, and swarms of grotesque alien creatures. Surviving requires quick reactions, constant movement, and careful positioning. Despite the overwhelming intensity of certain encounters, the controls remain responsive and approachable, allowing players to focus entirely on dodging attacks and unleashing massive amounts of firepower. Boss battles in particular stand out because of their massive scale and bizarre creature designs, often pushing the screen into complete chaos while forcing players to adapt quickly under pressure. A particularly creative gameplay mechanic is the “Death Brushing” system. Instead of dying instantly when an enemy attack connects, the game briefly slows time and gives players a final chance to avoid death. This mechanic creates dramatic close calls and helps make the gameplay feel more forgiving without completely removing challenge. It allows players to recover from split-second mistakes while maintaining the high-speed pacing that defines the experience. The system works especially well during chaotic firefights where the sheer number of enemies could otherwise become overwhelming. The level design is another major strength because it constantly introduces new surprises and environmental variations. Many stages feature branching pathways, hidden areas, and alternate routes that reward exploration and repeated playthroughs. Some hidden paths even lead to entirely different sections or encounters, giving the campaign a sense of unpredictability rarely seen in traditional run-and-gun shooters. The game consistently introduces new enemy combinations, hazards, and strange visual concepts that prevent the action from feeling repetitive despite the straightforward core gameplay loop. Visually, Weapon of Choice DX embraces a colorful and intentionally chaotic hand-drawn art style filled with grotesque biological creatures, exaggerated animations, and surreal environments. The alien designs are particularly memorable because of how bizarre and creative they become, blending body horror with cartoon-like absurdity. Environments are packed with strange details and mutated landscapes that make the world feel unstable and dangerous. While the visual presentation can occasionally become overwhelming during intense firefights, the sheer creativity behind the art direction gives the game a strong personality that separates it from more generic retro shooters. The soundtrack complements the gameplay perfectly with energetic music tracks that constantly reinforce the game’s fast pace and arcade atmosphere. Loud action-oriented themes accompany most stages, helping maintain adrenaline during heavy combat sequences. Sound effects are equally satisfying, with explosive weapons and alien attacks delivering strong audio feedback that enhances the chaos unfolding on screen. What truly makes Weapon of Choice DX memorable is how willing it is to embrace weirdness. Nearly every stage introduces some strange gameplay twist, unusual enemy, or bizarre visual idea that keeps players curious about what will appear next. The game constantly experiments with new concepts rather than relying solely on nostalgia, giving it an unpredictable quality that helps it stand out among many retro-inspired indie shooters. However, the game is not without flaws. The frantic visual style can sometimes make it difficult to clearly distinguish enemy attacks from environmental details, especially during larger battles where the screen becomes crowded with effects and movement. Certain sections also feature sudden difficulty spikes that may frustrate players unfamiliar with old-school arcade shooters. While the branching routes and multiple characters provide replayability, the overall campaign remains relatively short compared to larger action titles. Despite these shortcomings, Weapon of Choice DX succeeds remarkably well as a chaotic and highly creative arcade shooter. It captures the excitement and nonstop intensity of classic run-and-gun games while adding enough original mechanics and bizarre ideas to feel unique rather than purely nostalgic. The combination of varied playable characters, branching level design, and absurd alien warfare creates an experience that remains energetic and entertaining from beginning to end. For fans of retro side-scrolling shooters, arcade action games, and strange science-fiction worlds, Weapon of Choice DX offers a wildly entertaining adventure packed with explosive combat and nonstop creativity. Its colorful visual style, replayable level structure, and relentless pacing make it an excellent tribute to old-school action games while still feeling original enough to stand on its own. Beneath its chaotic presentation lies a fast and polished shooter that fully embraces both the fun and madness of classic arcade gaming. Rating: 7/10

This thing reeks of XBLA all over from the graphics to the gameplay, for better and worse. It has the intentionally ugly prog rock cover art tween animations popular at the time as well as weird spongy analog stick controls on a 2D shooter, but it also has what I can only describe as a pioneering spirit. The core gameplay is pretty basic run n' gun fare with one stick moving and one stick aiming and firing, it works well but isn't going to rock anyone's world and the enemies you face are pretty standard as well outside of the nasty visual flair. The game is broken up into a series of levels that you play through in 4 different routes of varying difficulty and length, a cue the game seems to be taking from Contra Hard Corps. The number one draw of the game and what I think is its biggest success is the roster of playable characters: each one has a unique weapon with a unique alternate fire and a unique double jump, with a few even having extra moves performed with the alternate fire button and the d-pad. Whenever you take a hit you go down and have to deploy a different character to attempt a rescue, if you can pick up a downed character and carry them to the end of the stage you get them back. This seemingly tiny wrinkle in gameplay absolutely carries the experience, as it creates great moments of tension where you have to stop and consider which operative to use. Do I send my best guy first or save him for the boss? If two characters get downed who do I keep? Do I send a lackluster character first as a sacrificial lamb to tank a hit at the start of a hard fight or save them for the one segment later in the route where their weapon or ability comes in clutch? Playing through the game on the hardest difficulty I often found myself having to consider these things at the start of every level and every single time I made a mistake. By the end I had sharpened my play and strategy so much I found myself not even being forced to use my favored operatives and had beaten whole routes using only scapegoats I had initially pegged as suboptimal. If I had one serious complaint it would be the length. While the level design in the game isn't particularly amazing it seems like the kind of design made for the sake of speed and quantity, except the quantity isn't there. As mentioned there's only 4 routes in the game, two are full-sized with 2 stages and bosses and a final boss each, but one only has 2 stages and 2 bosses and another is a joke route with only 1 stage and 2 bosses, with the stage being shared with the other short route. One or two more areas would go a long way into making the game feel more complete and potentially allow for using some of the underutilized single-stage enemies in more advanced setups. All-in-all the game has a nice amount of depth for what it is and doesn't quite feel like anything else I've played in the genre, if you like run 'n gun games and can stomach some amount of late-00's indie game crust then it's worth checking out.
