Every time I revisit this game, the graphics and lore blow me away. Not only does the hippo give me Vin Diesel vibes from Fast and Furious, the mechanics are straight up better than any racing game out there. 10/10

I downloaded Wild Animal Racing as a joke. That was the last joke I ever told. The moment I launched the game, I was greeted by what can only be described as a cursed hallucination of a giraffe with dead eyes and a hunger for victory. I picked the elephant because he looked like he knew pain, and I needed a guide. The race began and suddenly I was in Egypt, then Paris, then the Arctic—was I traveling through time? Was the rhino behind me or was he inside me spiritually? The controls are like driving a shopping cart down a mountain during an earthquake but somehow that only adds to the transcendence. The music is what I imagine plays in the waiting room of a dentist in purgatory. I threw a rocket at a lion and he spun so fast the laws of physics asked for a break. The giraffe overtook me at the last second and I swear he whispered “your soul is mine” before crossing the finish line. I cried. I laughed. I became something more than human. At one point my computer crashed and rebooted to find Wild Animal Racing still running, uninvited, in the background, like it wanted me to keep playing. My dog no longer trusts me. My spouse left a note that simply said “you’ve changed.” I have. I have seen the polygonal gates of madness and driven a hippo through them at 40km/h. This isn’t a game. This is a rite of passage. Buy it. Gift it. Let it consume you like it consumed me.

Mario Kart might have better controls and tracks, but none of that matters when Mario Kart doesn't accurately simulate fever dreams like this does. So why give Nintendo fifty dollars for an eleven year old game when you can spend four dollars on a nine year old work of art? Imagine what you could do with fourty-six dollars. You could buy food with that.

At first, I didn't think this game would be anything other than slop. I was quickly proven wrong, with a soundtrack that truly captivates your ears, riveting gameplay that kept me on my toes throughout my playtime, amazing and unique tracks. As well as a true sense of progression throughout the game. Truly deserving of 10/10.
