Yesterday starts off a bit weird and disjointed, but once it gains momentum it becomes surprisingly engaging. The game delivers a few standout moments that echo the charm of Broken Sword, especially in its mix of dark humor and those exotic, cult-tinged locations that keep you curious. It’s undeniably uneven, though. The pacing wobbles, and it never quite reaches the level of a classic or a genre-defining work. Still, despite its irregularities, it remains a genuinely enjoyable experience from start to finish. So enjoyable, in fact, that I’ll probably end up playing the sequel. Score: 7/10

Yesterday is a striking departure for Pendulo Studios, a developer best known for its colorful, comedic adventures. Instead of playful humor and lighthearted mystery, this title embraces a far darker and more unsettling tone, creating a point-and-click thriller steeped in cult conspiracies, violence, moral ambiguity, and psychological tension. Published by Focus Entertainment, the game unfolds as a compact but intense narrative centered on identity, trauma, and the human capacity for cruelty. From the first moments, Yesterday positions itself as a story meant to disturb rather than comfort, and that willingness to fully commit to its bleak aesthetic is what makes it such a memorable entry in the adventure genre. The premise begins deceptively small: a series of murders in New York involving homeless victims. Their corpses bear strange markings, and police interest seems minimal, prompting a group of idealistic volunteers to investigate on their own. What appears at first like a grounded social thriller spirals rapidly into something deeper and more dangerous. The protagonist, John Yesterday, becomes a central mystery in his own right—an amnesiac with a fractured identity and a past that refuses to stay buried. As the story progresses, fragments of his memory surface, revealing an unsettling web of cult rituals, shadowy organizations, and personal betrayals. The pacing often shifts between present-day detective work and Yesterday’s fragmented backstory, creating a narrative rhythm that keeps the player slightly off balance, mirroring the protagonist’s own disorientation. This structure encourages curiosity while immersing players in a psychological fog that never fully lifts until the final scenes. Yesterday’s atmosphere depends heavily on its visual and tonal direction. Pendulo’s signature comic-inspired art style remains, but the palette is darker, richer, and more dramatic. Stylized character models stand against meticulously illustrated backdrops—subway tunnels, abandoned buildings, dimly lit apartments—each rendered with a sense of decay and urban menace. The game often frames scenes like panels of a graphic novel, using cuts, angles, and stylized transitions to enhance tension. This visual storytelling works hand-in-hand with a subdued, ominous soundtrack that reinforces the impression of a world teetering between reality and nightmare. Together, these elements give Yesterday a unique identity: it feels like an adult graphic thriller adapted into interactive form rather than a traditional puzzle adventure. Mechanically, the game stays close to classic point-and-click conventions while attempting to reduce common frustrations. Hotspot highlighting helps eliminate aimless pixel hunting, making scenes easier to parse and reducing downtime between puzzles. The puzzles themselves vary in quality. Many are logical and intuitive, encouraging players to think carefully about inventory items, environmental cues, and dialogue clues. Others, however, slip into more arbitrary design—requiring combinations or sequences that feel forced, resulting in occasional trial-and-error stretches. The game avoids unwinnable states and offers a relatively smooth flow overall, but players who value perfectly elegant puzzle design may find some interactions lacking the refinement or coherence of genre standouts. Narratively, Yesterday is dense for its length. At roughly four to six hours depending on puzzle speed, it functions more like a compact thriller novella than a sprawling multi-chapter adventure. This brevity works both for and against it. On one hand, the story maintains urgency, avoiding filler, and driving players relentlessly toward its conclusion. On the other, some characters and motivations could benefit from more depth and development. Secondary cast members often serve more as narrative devices than fully realized personalities. The story’s heavier themes—ritual violence, social decay, fanaticism, guilt—are compelling but occasionally feel rushed, as if Pendulo tried to fit a much larger psychological drama into a tightly constrained timeframe. Despite these limitations, the game’s narrative ambition is admirable. Yesterday does not shy away from uncomfortable subjects or from portraying human cruelty in stark terms. It is unapologetically adult, not because of graphic content but because of the emotional and thematic territory it navigates. Choices players make can lead to different endings, some offering closure, others emphasizing the darker undercurrents of the plot. While the replay value is limited due to the short runtime, these branching conclusions give the experience a sense of moral weight and personal involvement that extends beyond the final credits. Ultimately, Yesterday is an unusual but compelling entry in the modern point-and-click genre—a game that embraces psychological darkness, moral complexity, and narrative experimentation. Its stylish presentation, moody atmosphere, and memorable central mystery help elevate it despite uneven puzzles, brisk pacing, and occasionally thin character work. Players who appreciate graphic-novel aesthetics, mature storytelling, and compact thrillers will find a lot to absorb here. It may not be flawless, but it leaves an impression—sharp, uneasy, and intriguingly ambiguous, much like its protagonist. Rating: 8/10

Yesterday is a great and fun mystery game that I first played a long time ago on mobile not long after it was released. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys or is interested in the genre.

Review by [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/43642699-The-Adventure-Library/lists/] The Adventure Library - all about point and click adventures Strange supernatural story about a sadistic multi-millionaire and his immortal victim. Quite short, but with a few decent puzzles, a funny martial arts teacher in a Himalayan monastery, good visuals and a hint for a sequel at the end. Guess I should play Yesterday Origins now. Conclusion: The only nude scene is censored in the Steam version.

Yesterday is absurd. I feel like I just played someones masterpiece and barely anyone knows what these people achieved. Don't get me wrong, it's still super janky and awkward at times, but this stuff is better than it has any right to be. First however, to keep in theme with the game... ========== FLASHBACK I only vaguely remember how I got to know Pendulo Studios: I was looking at cheap games online and had always had an interest in adventure games. The game Vertigo caught my attention, because of the link with the film, and I looked up the developer on Wikipedia: a Spanish studio called Pendulo Studios. Charmed by their story of humble beginnings and passion for the medium, I made it a goal to try and play all their games (especially since the earlier ones frequently went on sale for less than 1 euro). I started out with their breakout hit Runaway and was convinced I understood their style: janky, weird and absurd stories without any depth but with a lot of heart. Next I started with the sequel to Runaway, but it felt very similar and I noticed how my energy started to wane. The goal of playing all games by this studio quickly moved to my pile of canceled personal projects. But during my initial plan I had been a bit enthusiastic: I had also cheaply bought one of their later games... Yesterday. As I have recently been going through an extra intense adventure games phase, I decided to give it a go... ========== This game has the same jank and weirdness as their previous games. The dialogs are often ridiculous and some scenes don't make sense... But this game also does so many incredibly smart and innovative things I can barely wrap my head around it: - Super engaging non-linear storytelling - Incredible use of comic book style imagery during gameplay segments - Fixes so many annoyances of adventure games: hotspots, hints, quickly fading the character to the target location instead of having them walk all the way... - An incredibly complex story that actually kind of makes sense and is well constructed - Puzzles with realistic solutions. One time I didn't believe a solution would work in real life, looked it up online and was even proven wrong! - Packed with memorable scenes and beautiful environments - Extremely high pace with zero filler Runaway I liked because of the weirdness and the jank. Yesterday I admire despite the weirdness and the jank.
