As someone who is self proclaimed "Tired of death games" I am very shocked to be giving a glowing review, and yet here I am having played 30+ hours in one weekend. The protagonist is reactionary and vibrant. Fellow cast members are both hopeful and desperate in equal measure. Creating an actual atmosphere of tension and grief when someone falls, thanks in large part to the writing. Which allows for the time to actually develop relationships. I highly recommend this game even if you, like myself are tired of this type of story.

Yes, the game is good. Its characters actually have depth to them and the premise is unique. If you're into games like Ace Attorney, you'll love this. However, unless you're someone like me and like showcasing the achievements / want to play the last part to chapter 3 early when it comes out, I don't know if I would recommend buying the Steam version. The game is free already (https://vgperson.com/games/yourturntodie.htm) and (as of 2025) the mainline story content between the free version and the Steam version are identical. The primary reason for the Steam version is to give people who paid early access to chapter 3 part 2, which was meant to come out this year but has been pushed back a bit (https://x.com/nannkizum/status/2002994002820501885). So as of now, the only reason to buy the Steam version is to access the side stories... which are a bit of a mixed bag. The side stories are around 20 minutes and give a bit of background to some of the characters. Currently there's only side stories for 5 of the characters, Sara, Alice, Kai, Anzu, and Kurumada. The length of these are already slightly disappointing, I was expecting for them to be at least an hour long. The side game, Your Time To Shine, while not offering as much of a story, adds a lot to the relationships of the characters while being 2 hours long for each character (just Kai and Mishima right now). As for the quality of these side stories... they're not all that great. The dummies' stories are tremendously boring. Anzu and Kurumada's stories can be summed up in a sentence or two and don't add much to their characters. Anzu's story focuses more on the side character in the story rather than herself I feel like, and Kurumada's, while having a bit more going on, doesn't add much to his character as well. The relationships and characters in dummies' side stories don't have any correlation to the relationships / characters in the mainline story (Kanna's sister being mentioned at her expense in Anzu's doesn't count, they don't even interact with each other and nothing of value is added by her being mentioned). This is a pretty big missed opportunity, I already think the dummies' characters in the mainline story are lacking a lot and this could have been a great way to give them more character. The side stories for the humans are better, though still pretty short. I don't want to spoil it, but the relationships between characters are heavily expanded upon in these stories and are actually enjoyable to read. They also give background to some of the actions/motives in the mainline story, something which the dummies' stories do not. So all in all, it's like an hour extra of good content with 40 minutes (and really kind of less than that actually) of subpar content. Not that great of a deal for $13 (and a little bit more when its not on sale). You can watch all of the side stories on YouTube and would probably get the same amount of enjoyment since there's not much variation for your choices (besides in Sara's). I'm marking this down as recommended because the game is very good, but I would hold off on buying it until chapter 3 part 2 comes out. The side stories are also apparently meant to come to the free version as well at some point, so when that happens the content value of the Steam version will decrease actually.

Although technically incomplete currently, Your Turn to Die is, bar none, the best the death game visual novel genre has to offer. Inspired by titles like Danganronpa--I've seen Nankidai's social media, he literally owns merchandise--but blasting them out of the water, YTTD's story is a tense and masterfully written mystery/thriller. Most notably, the cast is not a bunch of bit players. They feel like real, breathing people with their own motivations, flaws, and values, and do things like "take meaningful actions even when the protagonist isn't looking at them" and "think about the dead long after they're gone." All of them are shockingly likeable. This game is also funny just as often as it is sincere, and Sara Chidouin is possibly my favorite protagonist of a death game ever, especially given that there are few female protagonists in the genre (and even fewer protagonists with as much believable wit, complexity, and independence as our "samurai woman" Sara). Note that there are definitely horror aspects, including a few jumpscares. Most are telegraphed. Also, the character designs and art are... an acquired taste (genuinely it grows on you, but at first it really is a shock) and the minigames are not really meaningful but always mercifully brief. As someone with a LOT of experience in this particular genre, even though we're still waiting for the final half of the final chapter, it's already a legitimate masterwork.
