There are games you enjoy, games you really like, and then there are the ones that permanently rent space in your brain. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is one of those games for me. This is my second full playthrough. The first was on the Nintendo Switch years ago, and this second run was on the Steam Deck. Usually replaying a long RPG years later is dangerous because nostalgia can lie straight to your face. You remember a masterpiece, then replay it and realize half the game was carrying your emotional support memories. That did not happen here. If anything, I liked Ys VIII even more the second time. And honestly, this is one of my favorite RPGs ever made. I put it up there with some of my personal favorites: Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Lost Odyssey, and Final Fantasy III. That’s not praise I throw around lightly. My RPG backlog looks like a digital graveyard full of “I’ll finish this someday” lies. The story starts out fairly simple. You’re shipwrecked on a mysterious island and spend the first half of the game rescuing castaways, building up your little village, and exploring the island piece by piece. Somehow the gameplay loop becomes insanely addictive. Every time I spotted a stranded survivor in the distance my brain activated like I was conducting military rescue operations instead of jogging through the woods as anime Indiana Jones. What surprised me most is how much deeper the story becomes later on. The game slowly shifts from survival adventure into something far more emotional and ambitious. Dana’s storyline completely carries the second half of the game, and by the end it’s dealing with themes way bigger than you’d expect from a game that initially has you gathering materials and beating up oversized crabs on a beach. The writing also deserves credit for not collapsing under its own ambition. A lot of JRPGs eventually disappear into fifteen layers of confusing lore and characters screaming the power of friendship while a moon explodes in the background. Ys VIII actually keeps its emotional core intact all the way through. The cast is also extremely likable. Dana is fantastic and easily became one of my favorite RPG characters. Adol continues his legendary career of being the unluckiest tourist alive. This man cannot board transportation without accidentally discovering ancient ruins, cursed civilizations, or extinction-level events. At this point insurance companies should refuse to cover him. Combat is another huge reason the game works so well. I’m glad this went with fast-paced action combat instead of turn-based combat because the gameplay feels great almost the entire way through. Dodging at the last second, chaining abilities together, switching characters mid-fight — it all stays fun even deep into the game. Boss fights especially are excellent. Some of these things show up looking like they pay rent in a volcano and immediately decide your afternoon is over. Then there’s the soundtrack. Absolute insanity. This soundtrack is loaded with tracks that get stuck in your head for days. Exploration themes perfectly capture the feeling of adventure, while the battle music sounds like the composers were legally prohibited from calming down for even five seconds. There were multiple times I stayed in an area longer than necessary because the music was too good to leave. The Steam version was also a massive upgrade over the Switch version. The visual improvements were immediately noticeable: higher quality textures, enhanced lighting and shadows with HBAO+, better draw distances, cleaner UI elements, faster loading times, and support for high frame rates and higher resolutions. On the Steam Deck, the game ran at a smooth 60 FPS almost the entire time and felt fantastic to play handheld. I do have a couple complaints though. The map can occasionally be confusing, especially later in the game when areas become more vertical and interconnected. There were definitely moments where I spent ten straight minutes running in circles because apparently my greatest enemy wasn’t ancient monsters — it was basic navigation. Also, with the enhanced visual settings enabled, I noticed a slight line/artifact on Adol and Laxia’s faces during certain scenes. It’s minor, but once you see it, your brain occasionally locks onto it like it just discovered the Zapruder film. However, there is a mod to fix this. My other minor complaint is that Adol is still a silent protagonist, and the game has this weird habit where fully voiced cutscenes will suddenly transition into text-only dialogue halfway through. It’s not a huge deal, but it can feel a little awkward when characters go from dramatic voice acting to everyone silently staring at each other while you read a paragraph box. Still, those complaints barely matter in the bigger picture. Ys VIII is one of the rare RPGs that nails almost everything: exploration, combat, music, pacing, characters, and emotional payoff. It starts as a fun adventure game and gradually turns into something surprisingly memorable and emotional without losing what made it fun in the first place. This second playthrough completely confirmed what I already suspected the first time around: This game is special.

It's not like this old classic needs yet another positive review, but well, here goes anyway! Ys VIII is just a lovely game through and through -- the world, the art direction, combat, story, characters and so on. Still well worth playing and has aged extremely well. As other reviews have already mentioned, it does start off pretty slowly in the first chapter or two, but the game really opens up and gets going after that. Any negatives? Well, to be honest I wasn't a big fan of the base defense missions, but that's just a minor gripe.

Huge into JRPG's yet never dove into this series. Didn't know where to start. Saw the 50% deal again on Steam and wanted a chill action JRPG to sink my teeth into. Combat is super fun, music is super memorable, story is very cliche at times but great. Overall the game is very relaxing to play. Runs great on the Steam Deck too. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana has been a great introduction to this series for me. Glad I dove in!

First of all I'd like to apologize to myself that I've been neglecting this masterpiece for a whole 5 years since this is my first game I bought on Steam in January 2020. I could've let myself experience this peak years earlier but I didn't so I'm sorry, me. Right. So I think it's safe to say that this definitely is one of the best JRPG I've ever played in my life. I'm young and really haven't played much to begin with but I don't think this game will be easily forgotten in me in years to come. I'm not new to Falcom, I've played all Trails, played Nayuta, Tokyo Xanadu, and also YS I & II actually. So whole vibe with Falcom is really just feels at home for me. And this game is... Wow man. Just, wow. What an incredible, well crafted, unforgettable game this was. As you can see in synopsis already you're on a ship about to go to your next journey, but then welp next second the ship wrecked and you're stranded in this cursed island. You gotta explore the island, looking for other survivors, and unraveling the mysteries of what is actually happening in this cursed island. Well you'll save the world while at it but eh JRPG enjoyers saving worlds everyday anyway. Now that sounds... Well okay, I guess? Not really something new or exciting. I mean, you're not in your journey with the boys to escort you to your wedding, or you're not in your journey to explore the world while trying to find the meaning of life of your short 10 years lifespan, or not like on journey to find your step brother that has become this Prophet-like figure to avenge your dead brother and sister, etc. But I kid you not this gonna be one of the most unforgettable memories in you after you finished this game. They made it so solid and refined that everything is just felt so compact and meaningful.. The exploration is fun and quite addictive, especially if you just can't stand that 99.97% of map explored. But it doesn't feel like burden, you're just running through the beach, the forest, the swamp, the ruins, the grass fields, fighting these monsters. And oh my god the combat is so much fun and engaging and so satisfying I'm telling you. It can be challenging as hell if you want, or if you kinda not used in action it's fine set it to Easy and you still can enjoy the game, really. Other thing have to be mentioned is definitely about the NPCs. They are so well written, each one of them I'm telling you you're gonna miss them after you finish the game. They are so unique, so charming, with actual character depth, and you can feel you're bonding with each and every one of them. And obviously the story. Oh. My. God. I can't tell you enough how good the story is. Like, sure you're stranded in this cursed island, then what? Well, thing is, whole thing is definitely DEEPER than what you think. They got... This they got that, all kinds of things kinda put into this making it a mess but it's actually not, they make the game can flow naturally and the story is told in a way that everything is just makes sense. I won't tell you much, but if I can borrow my friend words here, he said it's like Kimi no Na Wa (Your Name) if it's told with more depth and given more time to make the characters grow on you. Now take that whatever you will. Cause you’ll love Dana anyway at the end man, what a well written character. Next is maybe graphic, well nothing much can be say about this. I mean it's just that kinda basic anime 3D style with prepared poses and stuff so nothing too crazy about this but oh man it'll grow on you I swear. There's also couple of characters portrait and some scene in this unique hand drawn style, I personally like it and I think it's neat. Then there's music. Dude. If you're new to Falcom, you're in for a treat, bro. God this is one of the days when Falcom Music was really on their peak I kid you not. Beautiful music, memorable tune, when it rocks it rocks, when it makes you cry you bawling your eyes out drying that tears. Again, one of the best JRPG that just sitting around in the corner of my library that I have finally finished. If you haven't heard of this game, or maybe not in too deep to Ys series yet, or maybe really just randomly stumble upon this game and accidentally read my review until this far, really, just buy the game it's cheap anyway especially on sale, then just, jump into the game, go stranded in the island and save the world, I promise, you will not regret this journey. DANA FOREVER!

Falcom manages to combine a satisfying gameplay loop, breathtaking soundtrack, and beautiful story into a true masterpiece. I enjoyed every second slogging through nightmare difficulty on this wonderful adventure, one of the best RPG's I have played. 10/10
