It's a beautiful short story depicting various circumstances and experiences of physical and mental illness from multiple perspectives (patient, doctor, family, and friend). I wouldn't be surprised if the author was a primary caregiver for a close someone who wasn't able to take care of themselves. It's not written as crass or artless edutainment, but there's genuinely good advice in there, especially about the power and limitation of love when it comes to the day-to-day wear and grind of looking after someone. The main point of contention people may have with the story is its structural critiques about how society treats people with physical and mental illnesses. It's pretty toothless and mostly used to exonerate the familial abuse and ableism from the various people you learn about. A core idea the author keeps revisiting is that most people inherently want to do good, and that when we fail to do that for the most marginalised in society, it's a failure of community support, education, and economic resources. It's not something I entirely disagree with, but I think the game is too forgiving of people who choose to do horrid things even if their situation isn't conducive to a positive outcome. At the same time, a big reason why I enjoyed the game was the story's unwavering faith that even the most prejudiced among us can learn to be good. Every bad decision made by anyone in the story was a step away from being a good decision that could've been if their situation was just a little more different. Again, not a perspective I 100% agree with, but it's also not a vapid saccharine story, and I appreciated its affirmation of a shared humanity that can be found anywhere as long as we look and work to make the world a place for it. Also a really personal and humanistic portrayal of people suffering from physical and mental illness. Earlier I wrote that I wouldn't be surprised if the author was a primary caregiver for someone, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they also drew from personal experience as a patient as well.

A game that is definitely worthwhile to broaden your wisdom about discrimination and morality. The translation and writing is absolutely world-class. All the characters are really likable (I personally think I'd be Chinryu). Though the progression was slow to my taste, I was strangely more than willing to keep reading. And to top it all off, the art was so delicious i could tangibly lick it.

This is a beautiful and emotional story where the game's premise (a condition called Aerodema) serves as an excellent metaphor for problems in healthcare in the world today, especially when it comes to mental health and care for the elderly. The music and art are beautiful, and the story is well-paced and the sensitive subject matter is appropriately handled.

Hira Hira Hihiru is one of the best and most beautiful works to ever come out of anime/manga/visual novels. It is one of a small handful of works that would be deserving of a masterpiece label (and when I mean few, I mean exactly that), alongside classics like Ie Naki Ko and Lone Wolf and Cub. It is in many ways a profoundly humane and, at the same time, a genuinely intellectually demanding work. The premise itself is somewhat fantastical, a disease called "Aerodema" that temporarily puts one into a death state which subsequently brings the patient afflicted back to life. Hira Hira Hihiru approaches this premise with immense sensitivity and, to its credit, uncompromising realism. I wouldn't be surprised if the author has had experience working in a hospital environment before, his depictions of what it is like working with difficult patients is extraordinarily accurate. Hira Hira Hihiru follows two loosely connected stories in early 20th century Japan, illuminating two perspectives of a social and economic system which is unable to provide for those who with the disease. Through this, it touches on some genuinely profound and pressing social concerns. The first story follows Chigusa Masamitsu who has been tasked to travel the Japanese country side observing and reporting on the inadequate living and caring facilities for patients afflicted with the terrible disease. Appalled by what he sees Masamitsu alongside his companion, a professional photographer seek to document in forensic detail the shortcomings of a system which is ultimately designed to fail it's patients, one is left with no other conclusion by the end that these patients needs will never ever be met in a society dominated by class divisions and social inequality, families forking out of pocket to assist their loved ones when they are simply not able to afford it. Masamitsu undertakes a fight to educate the public on disease and to combat ignorance, religious superstition and prejudice in the process. The other story, follows a young man Tenma Takeo, whose whole life gets turned upside when someone close to him is afflicted by the disease, it subsequently goes into vivid detail the daily mundane slog and all the trials and tribulations of having to deal with sickly people. Ultimately disaster strikes and the family is ultimately torn apart by the stresses. Whilst the setting is early 20th century Japan, the theme itself is a very contemporary one, there is no shortage of such stories to this very day. Families being torn apart and fending for themselves unable to handle the social pressures in the face of disasters like the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing crisis in aged care and disability care etc... Whilst it isn't without its shortcomings, Hira Hira Hihiru is I feel a valuable contribution to the fight for a better public policy to healthcare, and such is a work that is commendable on a number of levels.
