Introduction This is a highly replayable mythological-wuxia sandbox combat-oriented RPG with extensive relationship simulation in a story generator, with base-building element. The English Translation While the developers announced that English translation is part of their plan, we are still very far away from its implementation. The language used in the game is written in Classical Chinese. The dev reported 4 million words in the game. New tutorials and in-game wiki are planned. With two more sects and three main storyline updates in the queue, I speculate that the English translation is impossible until mid-2026. The dev announced that they have started working on the translation in Apr 2025 live stream. They also planned to have monthly major updates, with five or less updates before 1.0. The Game Story The player is the Chosen One who can eliminate the world's evil. The game's background is in the fantasy realm of China, around 1000 AD. The world's inhabitants are tormented by a demonic presence named Xiang Xu. When the NPCs or the player experienced a prolonged depression, they would be possessed by Xiang Xu. Possession by Xiang Xu is a death sentence. The player, named Taiwu, is the only one in the world who can exorcise possessed individuals, making him a savior. Only one Taiwu can exist in the world at a given time. All major sects made a pact with Taiwu to teach their moves. In return, Taiwu will travel the world to eliminate Xiang Xu. Learning one move months in-game time and is impossible to learn all the moves in one lifetime. Fortunately, Taiwu also owns the hilt of a broken legendary sword called Fuyu, which allows Taiwu to transfer all his knowledge and experience into the sword. The following person who inherits the sword will be the next Taiwu, picking up all the knowledge from the previous Taiwu. The Game Mechanics The reversed designs contributes to its steep learning curve. The developers attempt to be innovative by reversing many game mechanics familiar to RPG players. For example, in a typical RPG, the depletion of an HP bar usually means death or defeat. The HP bar in this game is better understood as injury markers, which implies death or defeat when full. The game attempts to gatekeep the progression , resulting in uneven pacing and waste of time. Obtaining better quality items, powerful moves, or high social status NPCs are locked behind defeating dungeon bosses. Defeating the dungeon bosses will progress the state of the world, making Xiang Xu more rampant. However, defeating regular enemies becomes a nuisance when the player becomes powerful in the endgame. The frequent enemies spawn on the world map make combat a mind-numbing chore. Multiple major game mechanics are also locked behind the game progression, such as the reincarnation system, the kung fu competition, the establishment of the Silk Road, the emergence of the heavenly books, etc. The unintuitive book reading is one of the major criticisms of this game. To learn a move, the player must master the theoretical and practical aspects of the move. The theoretical element can be mastered by reading the relevant book. Each book will come with a summary, five chapters, and varying conditions. The entire book-reading gameplay, including the hunting and reading all the book chapters, is boring. This is not a stream-friendly game . The interactions between NPCs, with or without the player's interference, made the world lively. However, the interactions are only presented in texts, which requires the players to fill in the gap with their imagination. The dungeon crawling aspect is just hex-tiles map, with confusing markings, reducing its appeal (planned for overhaul in the future). The Combat The combat is always in 1v1, 2D side-scrolling format . Pausing in the middle of the combat is allowed for precision control. All other NPCs in the party act as supportive characters. The player may learn the combat moves from the 15 sects in the world, each with unique 40+ moves. Every move comes in two opposites; for example, Shaolin's long fist deals external injury when learned from reading a positively written book, whereas the same Shaolin long fist deals internal injury when learned from a negatively written book. Combined with the different game mechanics, such as five types of poison and 14 types of weapons, the players can dream up infinite builds. All bosses and enemies have their own fighting styles, making boss fights a real challenge. A single-boss fight is usually a showcase of all the experiences accumulated over several lifetimes; winning it is deeply satisfying. However, battles with regular enemies are frequent and mind-numbing, which are usually skipped with the auto-combat feature. The Developers and the Mixed Reviews The developers are notorious for refusing to accept and listen to the community’s feedback. The community has pushed for the release of the main storyline for years, but the developers refused. Instead, they chose to revamp the minor systems related to the sects in the game world since mid-2019. To the community's dismay, the developers decided to go into close beta in mid-2020, only releasing sporadic news in between until they re-release the revamped version in late-2022. The community felt cheated as the game was riddled with game-breaking bugs and was severely under-developed, resulting in a mixed review. The developers’ stubbornness turned out to be one of their greatest strengths. While the community constantly doubted the developers, they stayed true to their visions and continuously updated the game. Hopefully, their dedication will prove the doubters wrong and recover from the undeserving mixed review. The Story Generator This game has a lively world, a perfect game for master storytellers. Hundreds of NPCs are spawned during the creation of the game world, each with its unique name, personality, likes and dislikes, social roles, belongings, knowledge, etc. These NPCs may grow up, fall in love, get married, have children, and die of old age on the other side of the world without the player's intervention. The NPCs may develop a crush, get rejected, harbor resentment, exact revenge, lose their belongings, be harmed in natural disasters, or get injured or poisoned. They may not even have the chance to meet with Taiwu in person before death, only to be discovered decades later when Taiwu passes by their tombs. The Relationship Simulator While the game system only allows monogamous matrimony (re-marry is possible after the death of spouse), it is possible to build a harem with lovers and concubines. Rape, incest/inbreeding, extra-marital affairs, family trees, genetics, LGBT, fertility, physical attractiveness, the birth of twins and triplets, and birth defect are all possible in this game, allowing complex storytelling. The behaviors of the NPCs are tied to their morality. Evil-aligned NPCs are more likely to engage in obscene acts. Leaving your spouse behind to travel the world (traveling across the map takes months, and training takes years), it is not uncommon to find your spouse has given birth to several children upon your return. Jealousy and rivalry between romantic interests may even lead to duel or murder. Conclusion If the Chinese gaming community were to describe this game in one word, it would be “ hardcore ”. You will probably spend around 100+ hours before reaching the final boss. The current game also has a lot of game breaking bugs, with even more game breaking bugs introduced in each major update. If game breaking bugs is a deal breaker, potential buyers may withhold until 1.0 release. This game is a masterpiece, but it is not a game for everyone and definitely not a game for casual players. The main storyline is still a work in progress.
