I finished the main story and really enjoyed my time with it, but I need to give a few caveats. First, if you choose to play this game in English you should do so with an open understanding that the text has not been properly localized. There are a lot of typos and grammatical errors, and in cases 4 and 5 I observed multiple instances where there was untranslated Chinese text. The latter is a non-issue for certain story beats, but it also happened for "important" story information (i.e. dialogue with red highlighted text) and during emotional narrative moments, which is a shame because it's quite a distraction from the intriguing mystery. It's going to be difficult to pitch this game in it's current state to western Ace Attorney/murder mystery fans as a result. I had a friend who helped me translate the text in these instances, but it is a lot of effort most players wouldn't bother with when expecting certain standards for a text-based mystery puzzle game. I highly encourage the dev team to focus on at least machine translating all remaining lines from case 5 since it is the final case, if that's the method they are using, until they have the resources to translate and localize the game with a paid human editor. Second, unlike Murders on the Yangzte River or Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane which were inspired by Ace Attorney but put their own spin on the genre, Trials of Innocence heavily leans in to the Ace Attorney homage. It's clearly a labor of love by fans of the Ace Attorney series, and I personally think of the indie games I have played this is the closest likeness to the AA-franchise. Underneath all the translation issues there is clearly the same humor, witty dialogue, and likeable cast members. The art has also had an insane amount of work put into it just seeing the number of assets coming out case after case. In terms of the writing the mystery was larger and more complex than I was expecting. There are a quite a few parties involved by the end of the game, and there's a sequel hook on top of that. Puzzles aren't too difficult and the few occasions where I was stumped were due in part to wording or linguistic error. I know some people would mark that as a negative, but personally I don't think gameplay is an especially important category for visual novels which are this text heavy. The most important thing is always the story, and this one is very good. I just really wish the English translation was improved so that I could recommend it whole-heartedly to my friends who I know would otherwise enjoy it. I hope the game sells well so that the studio can acquire more resources to improve it as many of the reviews have asked for, and I was greatly saddened to learn that the lead writer for this game also passed away. I would love to play a sequel if this team is able to make one (hopefully to finish Charlie's story, seriously what is the deal with his dad!? ), especially since if they can produce an initial game of this quality they can probably improve other entries in the future.

A Rough and Hidden Gem, but A Gem Nonetheless I don't usually do long reviews, but I feel that people should be aware of this hidden game. The Good This game is clearly heavily inspired off of the Ace Attorney series, and it often has the same vibe when it comes to colorful visuals, characters that range from wacky to complex, and a lot of absolute banger soundtracks in both the investigation and court sections. If you had shown me the trailers and gameplay alone, I probably would think this was a spiritual successor to the Ace Attorney series even though its made by a completely different company. This game, with some comic relief and entertaining characters, is also surprisingly mature. Without spoiling anything, this game also has some mature topics and some genuinely sad moments in the five cases that it offers. It additionally discusses philosophical topics in a legal setting as one of its key themes that got me thinking about how justice and the law should, or ought, be interpreted. In my opinion, being a big fan of Ace Attorney myself, this game is somewhat more grounded when it comes to legal concepts. I wouldn't call it realistic or a court simulator, but it is more intellectual I suppose. The Flaws Now let me talk about some of the cons. This game definitely needs some polish. In the 30+ hours it took me to play this game, I never encountered a single crash or bug. However, the polish is primarily that over that 30+ hour period, I encountered a whole lot of typos. It isn't bad enough to ruin the experience or make reading confusing, but it's certainly noticeable. After a patch or two, the typos can easily be fixed. Additionally, while this game is translated, the menu upon first start up is not English. It's a small nitpick, but it only took me about a minute to find the language setting and change the text to English while leaving the audio in its native language (personal preference). Speaking of translation, the English translation is pretty good, there were very few moments (like only a handful of times) where I had to re-read to understand what was meant. Some major scenes have full voice-acting, although its mostly audio cues and sound bites (Like Ace Attorney with its "HOLD IT" or "SILENCE!" moments). The court sections are a little different from Ace Attorney when it comes to cross-examination. Even as a fan, it took me a moment to get used to it. The tutorial is quite clear though, so I definitely got into the groove fast. Like the Ace Attorney series, there are moments where it may not be too clear and you present incorrect evidence. I wouldn't call it obtuse, although some moments in the game definitely had me scratching my head. My advice would be to save often. Preferably before presenting evidence if its not clear what the contradiction is after a few minutes of reviewing evidence. The Verdict Overall, this game is a hidden gem despite its roughness which is relatively minor in my opinion. If you're a fan of Ace Attorney, it is highly likely you would enjoy this game as well. By the end of the story, I had that feeling when you're a little sad that the story is over, like reading a good book. There are two endings to this game, but due to its philosophical themes in a legal context, they aren't necessarily a typical 'good' or 'bad' ending. Again, I won't spoil it, but the offered decisions towards the end made me think for a good few minutes before I made my final decision. TLDR: If you're an Ace Attorney fan or a fan of courtroom/investigation games in general, I strongly recommend this game. At the very least play the demo to decide if you like it or not. If you can look past the typos and handful of times I double-read the English translation, this game, its story, its soundtrack, and its themes are well-worth it.

I was so impressed with this game's story and character writing, that even though I sailed the high seas for this, I bought it on steam so I can leave a positive review. The English translation is pretty jank at many times. Despite that, Trials of Innocence is still an easy recommend for any Ace Attorney fan.
A Trial passed with flying colours
I'm updating this review having just completed Trials of Innocence. Most of my initial impressions from having completed case one still hold true - it's a solid mystery game, that managed to wrong foot me once or twice with its puzzles and problems. The translation remains an issue, and there's a few little bits and pieces where the team's limited art budget shows, but overall it's a well written mystery game, beautifully presented. But I was particularly impressed by it showing a degree of sympathy towards the true culprits and the philosophical complexity of the law. That's something other media works that focus on trials don't always manage to achieve. Ace Attorney is infamous for its breakdowns; finally getting a murderer to crack and reveal their true nature. Trials of Innocence does this too, largely as a tribute to the series it takes a lot of inspiration from, but every single 'true killer' is treated with a degree of sympathy and understanding. It's quite refreshing I feel it could've gone a bit further to develop that theme; we still have some characters presented as more solidly evil than others. It's clear who the game wants and expects you to sympathise with, and who it feels doesn't really deserve it (Especially in Case 5). Still, this was a worthy effort; showing both how the apparently unlikable can have hidden qualities, and how the seemingly upstanding can be more complicated. I can hardly fault someone for stumbling a little while trying to climb a mountain few others dare even attempt. And with that, back to my initial review! Trials of Innocence makes no attempt to hide its obvious inspiration. I'll be judging it as such. I've played a good number of similar titles: Tyrion Cuthbert, Aviary Attorney, and most recently Of The Devil. There's a balance to strike here; evoke familiar elements while putting your own spin on it. And I'd say Trials of Innocence walks that line beautifully. The writing is solid, easing you in to the mystery solving while still being quite weighty and compelling. It's not a throwaway opening case. The character art is well done, and the animation is superb (though Chapter 1 lacks a 'breakdown' moment.) The devs also took the time to enhance and add to the formula. Instead of going back and forth over a replay of statements, Cross Examination is handled by Luna reflecting on the testimony and picking what to ask for more details about. Like an actual cross examination! And the Confrontations! I'm hoping they recur in later chapters - it's an excellent addition. It takes from Danganronpa's aesthetic, but doesn't replicate the format there either - you get a back and forth with the prosecutor, with music making it feel climactic and cool. Wonderful job! I have only two negative notes, and both boil down to budget. The game doesn't quite have a full set of sound effects. Some moments and actions simply happen in silence, whereas in Ace Attorney a small audio cue is included to emphasise the moment. A little more work here for key moments, like taking damage or securing a not guilty verdict would be extremely effective. More troublesome is the translation. It's not unreadably bad by any means, but if you're more used to content translated by a large professional team, it's going to come off a little clunky. There's nothing that stops you from working out the murder. (Bar one confusing line where the defendant is referred to as 'tied up', which had me baffled for a while.) but you can expect odd phrase construction, strange word and tense usage, that kind of thing. It feels like the translation was done by a primary Chinese speaker who has an academic familiarity with English, but less skill at employing it casually or in conversation.

English script definitely needs some polish but the story is still enjoyable in it's current state if you're a fiend for courtroom games.
