July 2025
The first thing I want to say is that Noctuary is one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. The plot is excellent, the themes interesting, the characters quite likeable, and the 2D art beautiful. The game is ~80% a visual novel, with the ratio of ARPG combat to dialog increasing somewhat over the course of the game. The beginning is mostly slow and quotidian, but I wouldn’t say that means something should have been cut; it’s important for establishing the characters and setting. I think I liked each chapter more than the last, though. The one thing I have mixed feelings about, really, is the translation. It’s serviceable—really, better than I expected—but a lot of lines are phrased unnaturally and a handful are just mistranslated. I can read Chinese, so I was checking that pretty often (mostly out of curiosity), but I did play it all in English. I don’t think the translation quality would affect someone’s understanding of the plot or characters, though, so I definitely would still recommend the game to someone who can’t read Chinese. As a final note, I want to say that on a somewhat abstract level, Noctuary reminds me of the Trails in the Sky duology, which are my favorite games (actually explaining this would involve spoilers for both). So if you like that and have any interest in an ARPG/VN hybrid, this might be for you.

This is a visual novel/action game hybrid. The main story shouldn't actually take that long, but the side quests reveal additional lore about the characters and grant you new powerups so I recommend doing them. You also need to do most of the sidequests to see all the endings. Pros: - Artistic direction is absolutely stunning, all character designs are beautiful, CG's are well-drawn, action environments are satisfactory - Setting and premise of the story are quite creative - A good variety of 8 endings that don't drag themselves out. Branch points are obvious and quickly lead to an ending. - Music is satisfactory, with Mildia's theme being a standout and particularly good to me. - Happy to support a Chinese game and especially one that has Cantonese dubbing. It's greatly appreciated <3. Cons: - Combat is pretty clunky, but bearable. I recommend frequently adjusting which Blessings you have equipped to handle that specific fight. For example, don't equip a Blessing that's only effective against regular mobs for a boss fight, and don't equip a Blessing that buffs you when you switch with your partner, if you're fighting alone. There's also an easy mode toggle in the settings that will greatly reduce the difficulty of combat if you're having too much trouble, but I was able to clear in the Normal mode. - English names of the characters are somewhat clunky and don't translate the Chinese names' elegance. I didn't play in English so I don't know how the story translation was. - Some plot moments could have had some extra care put into them to be more emotionally impactful, for example the death of Wishia was objectively quite sad, but honestly besides a small CG it wasn't too impactful and was essentially forgotten the rest of the game. Overall I'd give this a 8/10. Pretty worth the time to at least get one of the endings, though getting the true end will essentially require a 100%, which took me about 40 hours. I'm slow though. I just saw this game on Steam when it was on sale, and bought it because of the positive reviews. The reviews were right, this game is so good! The worldbuilding is great, the characters are very unique and full of life, even most of the side quests are good. Everything in this game are also relevant to the story, so you'll really need to work towards completion. I also just noticed that this game has the visual novel tag. It was fun making different decisions and working towards different endings. The endings are also very different from each other so it was nice to see all of them. Despite being a visual novel, I think it's more of a JRPG (or CRPG since it's Chinese), and I really liked the battle system here. It's quite different and it was hard for me to get used to, but I enjoyed it especially once I got used to it. There are some misspelled words and a bit of incorrect grammar in the translation, but the structure is still good and understandable.

There’s a charming idealism to the JRPG-like story in how every pretty much every character is fundamentally unselfish and even so there’s still conflict comes from a difference in ideals. Even so it’s not light hearted; there’s a feeling of desperation and a society and people desperately struggling to survive (it might have hit harder if the translation wasn’t a bit wonky though). The ARPG gameplay doesn’t have enough depth in itself to be the main course but it’s a fun side dish with most gameplay segments being short 5 minute chunks in between the story. There’s a decent variety of scenarios and some flashy boss fights. It works really well in service to the story. Also has a really good sountrack, especially the battle music.

Somehow I stumbled across this game (just browsing Steam) a few months ago and parts looked appealing so I put it on my wishlist and bought it when on sale, despite not knowing anything about it.. and I'm glad I did, as I now love it. It's primarily a visual novel (more than 80% of my playtime), and an action game a distant second, so if you're not interested in reading a story, it'll be a turn-off. There also seem to be a number of text errors in English (spelling, grammar, or using the wrong names), although really, it's only a small percentage of text; like 99% of lines may be fine and 1% have errors, but when you're doing ~25 hours of reading, that can still add up to a hundred mistakes. (I've played a total of 34 hours, but some were in offline mode.) With that out of the way, I mainly love Noctuary's characters and story/writing, as well as art and music. The action gameplay, while somewhat basic, was still fairly engaging and had some challenging moments where changing your build was worth considering. There's also plenty of silly humour, and I laughed so hard when I saw some references I didn't expect (mainly one reference to a certain Capcom series)...
