A super well-made short vn from minori. The subtitle they were only two, on the planet already tells u the true core of this game. No mind games, no heavy sorrow or hate, and there arent any rough plot twists either. its just two broken hearts n a warm, beautiful love tale. the story stays simple, but its soft and pure feelings hit really close to home. Good night, Sion.

eden is a visually striking and emotionally charged visual novel developed by minori and published by MangaGamer and Sunflower Ocean. Originally released in Japan in 2009 and later localized for English audiences, the game presents a poignant story set in a dystopian future where Earth faces imminent decline. At the center of the narrative are Sion, a genetically engineered human referred to as a “felix,” and Ryo, a soldier tasked with her protection. Their relationship unfolds amidst the desolate and melancholic backdrop of a dying planet, exploring themes of love, purpose, and the fragility of human existence. Unlike traditional visual novels that offer branching paths and player choices, eden functions as a kinetic novel, delivering a singular, uninterrupted narrative. This format allows the story to unfold with cinematic precision, emphasizing atmosphere, pacing, and emotional resonance. The game’s deliberate pacing ensures that moments of character introspection and world-building are fully realized, allowing players to immerse themselves in the narrative without distraction. While this slower rhythm may challenge those accustomed to more interactive experiences, it deepens the connection to the characters and the gravity of their circumstances. Visually, eden stands out with its widescreen, cinematic presentation, which departs from standard sprite-based character visuals. The backgrounds are richly detailed, capturing the desolate beauty of a world in decline and reinforcing the somber mood of the story. Characters are designed with distinct and expressive features, and careful use of lighting and color further enhances the atmosphere. Each frame contributes to the overall tone, creating a sense of continuity and immersion that supports the narrative’s emotional weight. The soundtrack, composed by Tenmon and Eiichiro Yanagi, is an integral part of eden’s storytelling. Music is seamlessly woven into the experience, adapting to the emotional beats of the plot and subtly guiding the player’s reactions. Tracks range from gentle and reflective to dramatic and stirring, complementing both tender character moments and tense story developments. The opening theme, "Little Explorer" performed by Hitomi Harada, effectively sets the mood for the game, capturing its themes of discovery, melancholy, and human connection. Character development is central to the experience, with the evolving relationship between Sion and Ryo serving as the emotional core. Sion is portrayed as highly intelligent and emotionally complex, struggling with questions of identity and her place in the world. Ryo, initially a reserved and duty-focused soldier, grows through his interactions with Sion, gradually opening up and gaining insight into human emotion and connection. Their dynamic is portrayed with subtlety, blending moments of tenderness, humor, and introspection to create a believable and moving relationship. Although relatively concise, with a typical playtime of around five hours, eden leaves a profound impact. The absence of multiple endings or branching choices allows the story to maintain a focused and cohesive narrative, ensuring that every moment contributes to the emotional journey. The themes of love, mortality, and personal growth resonate deeply, inviting reflection long after the game concludes. In summary, eden is a masterfully crafted visual novel that combines cinematic visuals, a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, and complex character interactions to create a deeply affecting experience. Its exploration of love, purpose, and human emotion within a dystopian setting makes it a standout title for fans of narrative-driven games. By prioritizing story and atmosphere over interactivity, eden offers an introspective and immersive journey that lingers in the mind, demonstrating the powerful storytelling potential of the visual novel medium. About the DLC: Make sure you play the Plus + Mosaic version — otherwise you're stuck with the censored one. If you somehow did what I did, just copy your save files from the base version to the Plus + Mosaic folder and you can view all the extra contents. Saves you from replaying the whole thing, especially since the Ctrl skip doesn't skip all the dialogue anyway. Now for the game itself: 7.8/10 They really should’ve integrated the Plus + Mosaic content more smoothly into the game — it feels kinda tacked on. The middle part honestly drags. The pacing is slow, and it seems like a bunch of side characters were thrown in just to inflate the heroine count. But the final part is where the game actually shines. Oyasumi, Sion.

Yes, just yes. Even newer ones cannot really reach the wealth of emotions and experiences of this novel. P.S. make the first playthrough WITHOUT "PLUS+ Mosaic" DLC.
