I... I don't know how to convey this but... I must say this game is absolutely great. The story is cautivating, the sounds, music and specially the V.A. I don't regret buying this game, even though critics are saying that the English translation of this game is a little bit scuffed, for me personally, I felt they did a pretty good job translating although some parts at the end (endings and conclusions) may need some improvements and also some dialogues don't appear in the dialogue box but it's understandable just so the text makes sense, afterall, english and chinese are different in all ways, they don't even come from the same indo family tree (Coming from someone who speaks Chinese as mother tongue), nevertheless, the translation is PRETTY darn good. Now, getting deeper into the story part, it is a pretty good story, nothing more to say, although the endings weren't what I would've wanted, they've left a good taste in my mouth, and I'm not asking for more. I'm quite saddened at the fact that this visual novel is basically unknown outside China, the world must know and give it its proper recognition. And to basically sum everything up. This is ABSOLUTE PEAK. And that's basically it, if anyone's reading this and haven't bought or haven't played it yet, you guys should, this game won't disappoint you.

"Be warned, this VN may not be suitable for certain viewers/players." This Visual Novel The Hungry Lamb: Travelling in the Late Ming Dynasty came out better than I'd expect.. it has definitely opened my eyes a little more as it shows quite some relation with actual history. While I had followed the VN for a while but didn't purchase during it's launch because I was occupied with other game, so I had completely forgotten what this game's description was about and dived straight in a few months later.. while I expect the story can get dark BUT I never knew it was THAT traumatizing. Oh well, anyway.. Storytelling was amazing, intriguing and it's dark enough to haunt me for a few days. It involves murder, cannibalism and even suicide.. definitely not recommended for the faint of hearts. Experience a world in a long period of time where food and water are so scarce that vast majority of people are struggling with literally nothing, powerless, eventually hunger drives them insane, desperately would do anything to survive even the most unimaginable ones. Artworks are absolutely stunning, often times they are so detailed that may cause some discomfort as well. There is something worth to mention as some viewers would get an ick when seeing the part where an underage girl is being disciplined or misunderstood there'd be some romance development in this.. while I won't really write any in detail here because there's already bunch of other players pointing that out so I'd suggest to either avoid playing this VN or at least skip that one specific part if it's making you truly uncomfortable. I believe there is no romance throughout the whole game because there's nothing indicating the Main Character "Liang" and the little girl "Sui" is interested in each other here unless it says otherwise in sequel (if any). VN completion fell quite short, there are 2 different Real Endings and it can be completed fairly quick if you're fast reader. One of the True Endings have certainly crushed me for days too. The VN is fully voiced except MC and narratives. Great background music, certainly matches each scenarios very well. I find the English Translation were okay, there are very few minor error but it's understandable and much better than the previous VN title they have released. Overall it's a brilliant VN to experience, in a way it made me realize that I am in fact quite blessed despite I personally still have a lot of disadvantages in some aspects. Thank you ZerocreationGame. Absolutely worth try playing at least if you're mentally prepared / interested in rather dark Visual Novel. . . . EDIT: New JP voice update is such a great addition! Audio quality wise is amazing and much better quality.. though I'd prefer original Chinese's dub because it fits the setting more. However with the addition, game could be more enjoyable for audience when there are option to choose from. After re-playing the game in most of the scenes, I can say the JP dub are so good throughout the whole story and it's even better in one of the True Endings ( where Man Sui have grown to be an adult, voice sounded matured which fits to her character very well, while in Chinese dub there's *barely any difference. No bad feelings either way, I still like Hanser's and she's doing great job!) . P/S: Do not hover on the spoiler part if you do not wish to know about it just yet....... while it's not major but it might not be fun for some.

Somewhat spoilery for the first 'twist'. I really don't understand many of the criticisms in the negative reviews of this game. In regards to "pedo" claims about some content about the game, I just want people to actually think critically for once. Does the game at any point endorse the disgusting actions of the protagonist? No, it in fact actively goes out of it's way to show how he has become without morals at the start of the story, in how he describes humans and his victims as 'sheep'. Does the game fetishise/glorify the spank scenes, or the peeing scenes? No, the prose is very plain/dry, and there is zero visual imagery in regards to them. Does the game gratuitiously use these scenes? No, I think kids needing to pee and disrupting a trip is a pretty normal and universal human experience. Do I think, given the circumstances, that it's 100% reasonable that the protagonist and his co-conspirator as looters and murderers and human traffickers would keep watch over them as they went to pee in order to not allow them to escape? Yes. What's even funnier is the people who think the game is romanticising an adult and a child. I'm sorry, but if you thought this, I think that says more about you if anything, because the game literally has zero mention of the protagonist at any point being either sexually or romantically interested in the child. The rape threat, while gross, was something that he said to scare her because she nearly killed him (which is also entirely in character). The most amount of intimacy that we see is the protagonist being a father figure to her in the true ending. Onto the actual review. This visual novel was nothing short of a masterpiece. I have never seen something so raw in terms of portraying human desperation and brutality. The feelings that the game makes you feel is something so often detached from our everyday lives. We're thankful that we live in a society where we are free to enjoy entertainment like this without worries about famine, plagues, public chaos and disorder, sadistic officials, etc. I can only imagine what it must have actually been like during those times. I also like that the game never actually allows the protagonist to be absolved of his crimes. He accepts that doing virtuous actions will not clean his past, but that doing them in of itself is a moral good that he must so, unlike many other forms of media which blatantly try to have their crimes forgiven.

I'm really glad I stumbled upon this game randomly whilst browsing the store page because it was honestly really incredible. I can see why this game is so highly rated for sure. The story is simply fantastic. The setting of ancient China is not one you see very often for visual novel games and here it is pulled off extremely well. It does a good job expressing the struggles and hard choices that people went through during times of famine, and the game is not afraid to show off the darker sides of that time period. One of the best ways this game does this is through the characters. From the down-trotted, to the well-off, to the self-serving, and so on, this game does an amazing jobs at using characters to represent all the various different people and groups of that time period. Liang (the protagonist) in particular does an amazing job at showing the struggle many people have in hard times of the balance between looking out for yourself and doing the right thing. The characters are not just there to serve as symbolism though. This game does a really good job through it's excellent dialogue and scenes at making you care about the characters and makes some of the scenes honestly kind of emotional. The art is extremely well done, can be quite unique at times, and fits the setting of the game very well. However, I would be amiss in not also pointing out the soundtrack. The songs are honestly really good and also fit the setting of the game quite well. Aside from a few minor errors, the translation quality is also surprisingly good, and the few errors there are, are very minimal and still get across what they're trying to convey regardless. Overall, a unique and very well written visual novel, that I definitely won't forget anytime soon, 9/10.

Grim and beautiful I've already read both previous works of Zerocreation Games studio and even made a fan Russian translation patch for one of them (Zanghua/Lay a Beauty to Rest, to be precise). Both of those works were very interesting and rather well crafted, but still there were some flaws here and there, such as some repetitive moments in Zanghua, or questionable game design choices in Er Fen Zhi Yi. However, this time, even if I can't say that this game is 100% perfect, it's a pretty solid step forward. The story is very well written, it's engaging, touching, intriguing and sometimes rather unpredictable. It has some very dark and uncanny, even outright nightmarish moments, but at the same time some very heartwarming ones. The characters are very lively and memorable, even some minor ones. The theme of prevailing hunger and how valuable and ought to be cherished food is can be sensed very deeply. The voice over is overall pretty good (hearing different Chinese dialects was very interesting), however, there are some minor flaws, like, for example, Cui'er and Man Sui's little brother sometimes didn't sound like little kids (especially the latter). Fortunately, it wasn't very frequent. The soundtrack, unfortunately, kinda lacks diversity, but still does pretty good job at setting up the mood. And the ending song is great. Regarding some controversial themes, I'd like to give my respect to the developers for not giving in to the censorship, not trying to smooth over the edges, etc. If it's 17th century, then it should be reproduced as such, and not through some kind of modern lens. I'd especially like to point this to some reviewers here. I'd also like to give a small advice to the devs for the future: you should make a small in-game encyclopedia, especially in a game like this. Because a lot of non-Chinese people don't even know what Ming dynasty is, much less would they be able to recognize there real historical figures like Li Zicheng or real historical events like Wanggongchang Explosion. So a set of small explanations for every such moment would be very appreciated. 加油!
