For reference, I have a lot of experience in this genre on the more try hard spectrum. (Melee, PM/P+, Rivals of Aether 2, etc) This game is not for the faint of heart for people who aren't willing to come to terms with it being very different from ones they may enjoy. This game is grimy, mean, and really really cool. The main mechanic of being able to dash cancel out of every hit into another button instantly gives this game a high APM without being too hard to understand. With no shield or ledges, this makes sure that neutral is played with feints, dash dances, and taking advantage of the movement dashing gives you. The combos are ridiculous, but to combat this you have a burst once per stock. This is definitely my favorite platform fighter released in a long while, though it has some issues which are planned to be addressed in the future. Online works for me, but for many others, is unstable/unreliable. They push fixes for this often and listen to feedback. Workshop support and more characters are planned for the future, along with ranked. If you're looking for a really interesting cheap game in the genre, this is a great option whether you want to play for a short period with friends or get more involved with getting better at the game. Again, as much as this game works for me and my try hard self, I can't recommend it to those who don't see themselves as good at the genre unless you only plan on playing with friends. ________________________ August 26th 2026 Update A little over a year has passed since this game's release, and I am still playing it just about daily. Most of what I said in the review stands true, and we're finally on the horizon to seeing Workshop being added. Online is peer to peer so issues now are typically individual based. Game is great fun especially if you're more versed in faster input controls and expressive combos, so be sure to check it out if it sounds appealing. In regards to the player base, I can safely say that you can occasionally find matches while sitting in queue *if* you are in North America. I know other regions are hurting for players more but otherwise, joining the discord (link is in-game) and getting in touch with the community and the looking-for-games channel is reliable. While you're there you can learn basic tech from people gladly willing to show you the ropes. Great fun game, things are looking up for it even more in the future.
the matches are truly quick and few for this game, but that does come at a cost: no air dodge, no blocking, and no grabs or ledgegrabs. your only options on defense are air dash, dodge roll, teching, and DI. And my personal favourite: PARRY. I might be addicted to the dopamine hit of getting a parry and seeing your opponent get frozen in place not being able to do anything while you just charge a smash and they know they are absolutely cooked. The last, if all goes wrong defensive option is burst, but you only get one per life and if your burst gets read, you're stuck in the animation left to your opponent's mercy. The main demographic i would recommend this game to is if you have experience in platform fighters or fighting games in general. This game is strictly NOT the greatest idea to get as your first platform fighter, and the reason is simple. The skill floor is high and the ceiling is even higher. Fortunately for me I hit diamond in brawlhalla and street fighter 6, so as soon as I got a hang of the controls, the game felt amazingly good and fast paced, The movement is SO GOOD, like, there's wavedashing, wavehopping, air dashing, and you can get a quick cancel airdash after literally ANY hit to continue your combos and i've never had a game that gets you in the flow as easy as AFQM. I think my only nitpick about the movement system is that after landing a move, you're forced into a walking state which gives you access to your forward tilt, but many times your dash attack is the better option and it gets awkward trying to get forward dash after a lot of moves. Otherwise, it's hella smooth. Neutral, because blocking doesnt exist, is literally just FOOTSIES. Like, hit and dont get hit, punish or get punished and die. Or just be a god and parry everything, but unless you're Daigo, that's not happening. And that feels refreshing as hell, cus you will ALWAYS get a combo off of any hit, except for some projectiles, and you buy fighting games to push buttons and not block, right? Solid 10/10 experience. Unfortunately, devs are somewhat notorious for delaying updates but I can look past it because at the end of the day, we're all human.
