A Total War Saga: THRONES OF BRITANNIA Thrones of Britannia is a work of art. Your journey will return you to England's ancestral past, into the Anglo-Saxon age. To the Danelaw, the fyrd, to Alfred of Wessex. If you're a fan of The Last Kingdom, this will be the game you want. There are a lot of strategy "experts" on here, as well as a lot of longtime Total War fans, that will tell you to avoid this game. But that depends on who you are. I'm not a Total War "expert" myself, not even close. But I *was* an undergraduate History major who spent a lot of credit hours on the Middle Ages, and quite a few on England in particular. In my time so far with Thrones, the game gets it right. And as an artist, I find it interesting, too; this game breaks with the standard Total War model and instead uses Viking Age imagery with a kind of stained glass look. It's authentic, moody, and a little creepy and unsettling, and that's how I've always imagined this time period, sitting as it did between recorded history and the foggy realms of half-legend. I've always liked the typical Total War "realistic" portraits more, I think - they add more realism and immersion - but Thrones certainly evokes a mood. Even the camera, which a lot of people have complained about, adds to the mood. People are used to zooming all the way out and seeing the whole island of Britain. But here, you zoom all the way out and only see a few counties. That's not because the designers didn't know how to make a camera. I imagine the game does it on purpose, to give you a scale of the land you rule, to really allow you to see it as a Viking Age ruler would have, and not as a modern viewer does with all our atlases and maps and globes. Thrones isn't afraid to break away from the family and be its own creation, or to try to sink you a little deeper into the world you seek to rule. And if you really can't stand it, there's mods that "fix" it for you (though whether they're properly updated is up to the modders themselves).
Total War: Thrones of Britannia is easily my favorite game in the Total War franchise. I know it isn't everyone's top pick, but it absolutely clicked with me. The setting is what makes it so special. If you're interested in the history of the English kingdoms, the Vikings, and the Scandinavian world, this game does an outstanding job of bringing that era to life. Every campaign feels immersive, and I found myself genuinely invested in the factions and the history behind them. The modding community deserves a lot of credit as well. There are some fantastic mods that add even more depth, replayability, and historical flavor, making an already great game even better. I've put countless hours into Thrones of Britannia, and I still find myself coming back to it. For anyone who enjoys early medieval history, especially the struggles between the Anglo-Saxons and the Norse, I can't recommend it enough. It's a hidden gem in the Total War series.
It is not the most popular and beloved Total War game. It is an underdog whose value is bitten by a trend. However, truly: it is more pretty and entertaining than it is usually told. I have noticed that most of the negative reviews are written by players who played it less than 10 hours, and positive - by those who played even hundreds. People find something to enjoy this game. Yes, it resembles the old good first Shogun or even more Medieval Total War - Vikings Invasion. But it was a GOOD Shogun. Its map is relatively cosy and small like Japan or Brittish Isles. Its graphics is stylish like the old Welsh chessboard and its pieces. It is simpler than Shogun 2. Nevertheless, it is nice to have such a "simple" small Total War game for a funny price. Just enjoy and relax it in endless skirmishes with vikings or against them :)
I really like this game. I enjoy the smaller scope and the lack of unit variety doesn't bother me at all in this setting. The sieges are some of the best in all of Total War. I enjoy that I can Ultimate Victory the campaign in a weekend, and I don't have to sit through 300 factions at the end of every turn. Obviously this game is not as dense as other TW titles that have much larger scopes, but for me it's a nice relaxed weekend killer where I can establish Scottish dominance while watching The Last Kingdom. Good stuff.
Never understood the hate this game got. For me it's my first Total War game and my favourite of the bunch I've played. The artstyle, soundtrack, battles, world map, unit design are all *chefs kiss*. The world map is smaller than previous TW's but it works perfectly here. The game is more simplified and not overly complex unlike other TW games. If you're into the Viking era you'll love this.
