Well made and worth the price. ---Notes--- To start off with Airmen, you have access to two modes. Sandbox and Expedition. In sandbox you use the designer to create a range of vessels from Airships to submarines to play with. You can take these out into the sandbox world for free and test them out. The designer is simple to use and understand the requirements and limitations of vessels that you create. The only gripe i have is the part limit. The part limit (as of now) is 700. It may seem like alot but when blinded by the beauty of your creation, it can catch you off guard. However, there is an array of pieces to work with that helps you manage the part count. In the expedition mode, you have 3 choices. You can be the captain of a vessel of your creation, use a default one, or download a vessel from the workshop. Then you can set it to be open crew or close crew. you may also join another crew and share in the spoils or take part in a sub-mode called Siege. In Siege you crew a fortress or a ship against waves of enemies and in this mode, your ships dont have a cost. Expedition also plays out similar to Sea Of Thieves in the manner that you grind for resources instead of gold and use said resources for researching more parts and for the parts themselves when building vessels. The cost for everything isnt too expensive. Anyone can get everything even through casual play. There are several means of collecting resources. You can gather them traditionally with tools, complete a range of contracts from deliveries to bounties ,or take part in events that appear on the map. The main gripe i have about the game is the low playercount, everything else about this game is fantastic. I appreciate everyone who reads this review and it may seem like my nose is brown but i truly do enjoy playing this game and look towards the future development.
As a refugee from World's Adrift (which is being cancelled), I highly recommend this game. While graphics are not as stunning, the gameplay for an airship building and fighting is top shelf. While I'll miss WA, this game definitely fills the void, and the developer seems very active and interested in keeping it going. A larger map would be the only thing I would like to see as it grows.
Robocraft meets Guns of Icarus ...With both concepts expanded and improved upon. Or at least the foundations are there for it. Before I go further, consider this a first impressions review. I bought the game, installed it, played it briefly, and rested on it a day. I Like [*]The airship construction. Rather unrestricted. Requires some thought as opposed to slapping together pieces. [*]The fact that you aren't limited to just airships (hint, hint). [*]The team-based combat, including boarding enemy vessels. [*]The physics are nice. Predictable and smooth movement. [*]The individual component design is nice, although "samey" (for now). [*]Components such as weapons seem meticulously balanced for in-game application. Not left to merely "works on paper" balancing. [*]Very few bugs, many quickly identified and fixed within hours (pretty awesome). [*]The community. Albeit small (and I didn't interact with anyone), I didn't see the salt-laden a**holes that tend to flock towards these games. Pretty relaxed environment. Hoping it stays that way. I Didn't Like [*]The game world. Pretty bland. [*]The overall performance seemed identical regardless of graphics settings until entering fairly basic presets/custom setups. That seemed wonky. [*]The GUI is a bit ugly. It gets the job done, but it could use some improvement. [*]There isn't a whole lot to do. This may be result of such a small community of regulars. It could be that there just isn't much to do. I wanted to refund this purchase. But I'm not going to. The foundation set for Airmen has a lot of potential and the developer seems to be actively working on getting it there. So I'm sticking around for it. Edit: After 165 hours of gameplay, I can safely say I am glad I did not refund this game. There have been several updates since I started, and the developer seems rather determined. Over the past few updates, with the inclusion of new components, weapons, unique AI entities, enemy installations, and new/updated landmarks to explore, "stuff to do" has been a focal point. Looking forward to what comes next.
The Stages of playing Airmen: 1) Think its impossible to biuld a ship 2) see other peoples cool ship and want to make one 3) Realize biulding ships is really easy 4) make an oversized blimp 5) Get boarded by rinzler and realize the blimp has to go 6) Make a really fast ship 7) get blown out of the sky by Swarmbot 8) Finally Biuld a decent ship 9) Rinzler bards you again 10) realize boarding charges ore for the boarders not for you 11) spend alot of time trying to unlock hats 12) Rinzler boards the Unboardable ship with a bayonet spyglass 13) Biuld the most absurd ship ever 14) Rinzler boards that too 15) Someone biulds a TF2 heavy in airmen and your life is then complete 10/10 Get this game Bronze updates all the time
