When I wake up, I think of this game. When I go to bed, I think of this game. When I daydream, I think of this game. When I focus, I think of this game. When I look in the mirror, I see the game. The walls in my room are made of the game. Every particle of my brain matter is made of it. In short: the game is a strikingly original and vivid experience. If you were put in a mental asylum in 1800s Britain, you would almost certainly resonate with this game. And when that happens, it will become your very own undulating essence.

it seems no one else in reviews mentions this at all: If you unlock the locked content of this game using the guide below you get access to the full original american McGee's Alice(2000) through this game so you are basically getting 2 games in 1. Despite its age, the original is a very good game with a great atmosphere and soundtrack. Its worth buying Madness Returns just to get access to the original game imo. Have not played Madnesss Returns yet but it is probably also good Guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3014521889

Great game, EA has killed off this series though and truly mishandled it. Worth playing but it's a shame it's in the hands of such a crappy company.

{{PLEASE READ BELOW ABOUT PC VERSION ISSUES}} ***To get this running really well with the frame rate, you need to go to the game’s files. Navigate to the folder as follows. Either: Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config Or SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/Config/DefaultEngine.ini From here, access the AliceEngine.inl, where there will be a page of the game code. Scroll down to the “MaxSmoothedFrameRate” line where there should be a “31.” Change this to a “60.” FPS is now at 60 when accessing the game. This change alone makes the game feel essentially “Deck Verified,” if you’re one in the camp. ***Chapter 1 has a major potential soft-lock if you access the “Cranking Up and Pressing Down” SECOND. You must go through this area FIRST before the other side to avoid a bug where an unkillable/despawned Teapot enemy is, preventing progress. ***Chapter 5 may have an instance or two of a bugged Doll Girl, invisible, which is still hittable but not killable. Exit out the game completely, then return to it and the checkpoint should fix itself to where the enemy properly spawns and can be killed. These are only the primary couple issues that I ran into. Anything else incredibly minor may just require a simple checkpoint reset. Since its release, this game has not really received any updates whatsoever to fix the bugs at play, so purchase at your potential risk of having to deal with a few irksome hairs. If you get the 60FPS unlocked, the game runs beautifully, the best performance of all versions available for it. The increased frames help a lot especially with combat sequences. The biggest issue with the game itself is the pacing. The runtime itself is not bad, actually quite decent for an action platformer, but the levels are too long, at feature length a piece (except the final, only a boss fight) potentially clocking in up to two hours each. Either this game needed to be half its length or it needed twice as many levels to break it up. The environments and the art style are all a treat, but you better enjoy them enough to endure the sluggish pacing getting through each of them. All the core mechanics featured are basically introduced within the first chapter; the platforming and combat scenarios, while solid, don’t have too much variety, apart from a few of the bigger badder enemy types. Each level is aesthetically different in setting, but the things you do to progress through them don’t really change up too much, including the plethora of collectibles per level; albeit, it is still entertaining thanks to the richly macabre style and novelty of the fact that this is a very deranged Alice interpretation. The story hits a reveal you wouldn’t expect for an Alice romp and is just one of the things that make this version stand out. It’s unfortunate that this release didn’t include the original Alice game from 2000, but that’s why you should get either the PS3 or Xbox 360 (which is compatible on Xbox One/Series) copy, where the original game is available as a free DLC download. It’s reportedly possible to obtain the original on PC via an additional game code hack, which I tried, but the original game wouldn’t open up. The option for playing it appeared on the main menu for Madness Returns, but just closed out the game. There’s likely more to the process but is likely tedious for most. Overall, not without flaws, ESPECIALLY this version, but if you get it working right, this is an entertaining blast from the past and is the smoothest way to play, bugs aside.

A gem in the hands of the devil (EA) I will start off by saying that I LOVE this game! Now onward to talk about EA and some of their laziness, after EA came back running to steam and brought back this game they half-assed it and forgot to include "American McGee's Alice" game that is included as a bonus which you will need to follow a guide in the community hub to be able to play, there are also guides for getting 60fps since its capped at 30fps and other settings as well as getting access to extra outfits that needed to be included but EA forgot. Another thing is that the Xbox version has achievements but were never added to the PC version for some reason, although its nothing crazy that stops the game from being played it would be nice to have them on here. Besides EA being EA, the game is amazing and whether you buy it during the sale for $1 or at full price for $10. I'm surprised I didn't play this game earlier, I would look at it and have this small itch for it, but years later finally decided to give it a go and enjoyed it from start to finish, so if you feel like playing it even a bit then give it a go. The game does a good job to get the player sucked into the wonderland, with some dark but beautiful atmosphere, bundled with a great soundtrack which really adds on while your killing your way through wonderland. One big tip for American Mcgee's Alice is to make sure you save often as dying will take you back to the start of the level you are in and the auto save wasn't working for me, but you shouldn't have this issue with Alice: Madness Returns. It's really sad that EA owns the Alice game rights as they cancelled the 3rd game in the Alice series (Alice Asylum) and not selling it and just plan on sitting on it and told american mcgee that he will never be able to touch the alice games in his life as "they have no desire to see the Alice franchise continued by american mcgee or anyone else" and after he quit game development. He even tried getting the Alice TV show going but ended up getting cancelled as well. Such as sad story, the more you hear about the EA the more you hate them. Now it's time for some tea..
