This game is great! I love the artwork and music. It's "ancient" but high-tech, so it reminds me of those old Thundarr The Barbarian or He-Man cartoons. Gameplaywise it's a lot like Kingdom Rush but in space. It's nothing earth-shatteringly innovative (of course it's over 10 years old) but definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of TD games.

Really enjoyed this Tower Defense game. I love games where there are an actual grid you can place your towers on. This one was both simple, challenging and well balanced. It had a fun story line. It had plenty of good towers and upgrade paths (including a few that aren't very economical) but not so many that you get overwhelmed or overloaded. It can require a tiny bit of pre-planning and changing your upgrades in the later levels (or simply play a few more of your favorite levels to get more gems to upgrade). One of my favorite games in years and definitely recommended.

Ancient Planet is a tower defense game developed and published by Moonlight Mouse that aims to recapture the appeal of classic strategy titles while blending it with a colorful sci-fi aesthetic. Set on an ancient world besieged by alien forces, the player takes on the role of a commander defending the last bastions of a once-great civilization. The story is lightly sketched but serves its purpose, creating a backdrop that explains the use of futuristic weaponry and relic technologies that power the defensive towers. The tone is tongue-in-cheek at times, with a narrative delivered through brief text snippets and simple comic-like panels that add a sense of personality without ever becoming intrusive. From the start, the game positions itself as a straightforward yet polished entry in the tower defense genre, focusing on mechanical clarity and incremental challenge rather than complex storytelling or innovation. Visually, Ancient Planet is clean, bright, and functional. The maps are presented in an isometric view, giving a clear sense of terrain and pathing, while the environments range from lush alien forests to barren deserts and metallic strongholds. The art design relies on a mix of colorful simplicity and clear readability, ensuring that enemies and towers stand out even during chaotic waves. There’s a certain charm in its cartoonish depiction of futuristic warfare, with enemies ranging from robotic scouts to hulking armored units that march steadily toward your base. The soundtrack complements the action with rhythmic, synth-heavy music that reinforces the science-fiction atmosphere without overwhelming the player’s concentration. The user interface is minimalistic and intuitive, giving quick access to tower construction, upgrades, and resource management without cluttering the screen, which helps maintain the focus on tactical decision-making. The gameplay in Ancient Planet is where the game’s classic roots are most apparent. It follows the traditional formula of building and upgrading towers to defend against waves of enemies, but it introduces small twists to keep the player engaged. Unlike many tower defense games that restrict tower placement to fixed nodes, Ancient Planet allows you to build freely within the designated play area, giving greater flexibility to experiment with defensive layouts. The player earns resources by defeating enemies, which can be spent on constructing new towers or upgrading existing ones mid-battle. Between missions, an overarching upgrade system lets you improve towers, unlock new technologies, and strengthen your base using the gems and currency accumulated from completed stages. This persistent progression system adds depth and long-term motivation, especially since the upgrades can be reset and redistributed, allowing players to adapt their strategies as challenges evolve. As the campaign unfolds across dozens of missions, the game gradually increases in complexity by introducing new enemy types, environmental hazards, and tower upgrades. The early levels serve as a gentle introduction, but later stages demand careful planning and efficiency in tower placement. Each map presents unique choke points and multiple enemy routes, forcing players to balance their resources between concentrated firepower and broad coverage. However, the difficulty curve can feel uneven at times. Some missions are easily cleared with basic strategies, while others spike unexpectedly, pushing players into grinding earlier stages for more upgrade currency. This pacing issue becomes more noticeable toward the later chapters, where the sense of progression slows and repetition begins to set in. The satisfaction of building powerful defenses remains, but the grind for incremental improvements may test the patience of those seeking a smoother, more balanced progression. Mechanically, the game’s strengths lie in its simplicity and responsiveness. The controls are smooth, tower commands are executed instantly, and feedback from the battlefield is clear. Yet, this simplicity is also its limitation. While functional, Ancient Planet doesn’t take many risks or introduce new strategic layers that could differentiate it from other titles in the genre. The enemy waves, though varied in composition, often rely on sheer numbers and endurance rather than unique tactical behaviors, which can make battles feel repetitive after extended play. Still, for players who appreciate the classic satisfaction of refining tower layouts and optimizing resource flow, the experience remains consistently enjoyable. The sense of empowerment that comes from watching a meticulously arranged defense crush an invading force is timeless, and Ancient Planet delivers that in abundance. Overall, Ancient Planet succeeds as a solid and accessible tower defense experience that embraces its traditional roots without trying to reinvent them. Its colorful visuals, flexible tower placement, and upgrade system provide enough engagement for fans of the genre, while its straightforward structure and steady pacing make it approachable for newcomers. It may lack the strategic depth or innovation of more ambitious tower defense titles, but its charm lies in its focus and consistency. It knows exactly what it wants to be—a classic, casual, and satisfying defense game with a sci-fi twist—and it achieves that with confidence. For players looking for a relaxing yet strategic experience that captures the essence of old-school tower defense games with a modern presentation, Ancient Planet remains a worthy choice despite its familiar design and mild repetition.
