This game rules! The art is metal as fuck plus I think there's a story in there somewhere. [Protip] Make sure to go into the options and turn the "No Nipples" mode to OFF!

---see where this game landed on my SHMUP tier list beneath this review!--- I'm surprised this has Overwhelmingly positive reviews. Unlike most SHMUPs, this one is designed to be a grind fest. Your runs are basically gated by lacking the stats and weapons to power through the enemies, and so you need to die, equip your new weapons and start the run again. I'm not a fan of this repetition, nor do I find the stages interesting enough to feel like wanting to grind through it. You end up with a long inventory of junk weapons that you need to manually consume one by one in order to gain permanent stat points. I wish there was a button to just consume all of this stuff minus the highest tier weapon of each type, it's needless busy-work to deal with. Gameplay-wise, It is mostly a mass of enemies that make you feel like you're on just 1 screen the entire time. There are some mazey levels that are exceptions, though even these do little to differentiate themselves from one another. So I guess it feels like the game has 2 levels with enemy variations.. I'd have liked to see more area variety (another reason I am not pushing on with the grind of this). People rave about it having a good tutorial, but they kinda screwed up with it because I chose the tutorial at the start, then when I started an actual run it ran through all the tutorial stuff I had already seen all over again... Despite these gripes, it can be captivating and I've spent longer on this than a playthrough of your average SHMUP already, so despite these gripes I can't deny having some fun with it (thus my positive rec) but I wouldn't say I rate this as highly as SHMUPs like Jamestown , ZeroRanger , Super Hydorah , Tyrian 2000 or Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo . ===================== My SHMUP Tier List ===================== -Simply personal taste. I’m excluding most roguelikes, boss rushes and genre mash ups- Loved: Jamestown | ZeroRanger | Super Hydorah | Tyrian 2000 | Great: Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo | Decent: Steel Empire | G-Darius | Ganablade | Dogfight | Angel at Dusk * | Meh: Nanoforce | Steel Rain | Eigengrau* | Zenzizenzic* | Steel Vampire | Natsuki Chronicles | Nebula Fighter | Zangeki Warp | Awful: Ginga Force | ===================== -Probably played another 100+ Shmups, but I only started this list recently and am sticking mostly to modern releases -Not including any 'flying anime girl shmups' as they don't appeal to me. Believe me, I've tried. * = Felt like I was on the same screen the entire time, which I dislike.

Angel at Dusk is a power fantasy shmup. That's not to say it's bad, but most of it was made with beginners in mind, and it won't appease most of the hardcore shoot 'em up fans. The game offers three distinct Arcade campaigns, all with unique levels and bosses, and the Chronicle mode, which is a long mode progression and customizable abilities. Chronicle mode is, of course, not made for veterans, and this might be a problem because it needs to be cleared in order to unlock the third Arcade campaign. I personally did not have an issue with this, as the later levels of Chronicle mode offer a good challenge, and figuring out the best weapons and stage routes is useful for playing Arcade later on. The Arcade modes themselves each have three difficulties, the last of which I found to be the most fun (even though I'm quite bad at shmups). The game is very forgiving when it comes to survival play, and allows many misses before you get a game over. This causes score play to be the most fun, and Angel at Dusk does a great job introducing score even to beginners. The score system is simple, you get more points the closer you are to the enemy as you kill it. What makes it especially rewarding is that score doubles as experience points, which upgrades your ship, making it visibly larger and its shots more powerful. Upon getting hit, your score/exp received gets a 10% penalty for a while, so you're still encouraged to play clean, especially if you're trying to climb the online leaderboards. There's also many unlockable ships, each with its own score rate (to keep the most powerful ones less competitive when it comes to scoring). Another thing Angel at Dusk does exceptionally well is the presentation. It's filled with beautiful thematic art, from the title screen, to the angel designs, and to the HUD itself. The visual and audio feedback makes destroying pieces of large enemies and collecting items extra rewarding. Charged shots feel powerful and push back enemy bullets, allowing you to fight back the densest of enemy barrages. The screen shake, meaty sounds, animated sprites, and chunks of enemies exploding contribute to form an extremely satisfying experience. Despite that, I changed the bullets to "e-sports mode" to make them more visible, since the game offers such accessibility options. The game's lore is very interesting to read, which is unexpected for this type of game, but you'll need to read it in your log collection, because it goes by very fast during gameplay. Angel at Dusk is worth playing simply for the art and experience themselves, but there is a lot to love here. If you are a beginner, this can be your chance to learn to enjoy a new genre. If you're a veteran, this can be a relaxing break from the demanding arcade difficulty and a subversive, refreshing take on shmups made by someone who loves them and understands them like you do (in contrast to the likes of Cygni).

This game was made by a guy who's been creating insane doujin shmups since the 90's, and I feel like this might be his magnum opus or at least a breakout hit. I've seen chatter about this game outside of shmup circles and I think that even if you're not a hardcore shmup nut this game might be able to hook you. Akiragoya's games are super unique, there's almost no shmups that feel as chaotic and manic while being as approachable, constantly having you zip around to collect power ups and i-frames and aggressively taking enemies down at close range, all while dodging patterns that are simple but spectacular and play into the high movement and aggression focus. And that's to say nothing of how JUICY it all is with some of the best explosions and screenshake and screenfilling weapons in the market. What this one also brings to the table compared to his other games is a ton of content that should satisfy even players who usually get bored after one playthrough of a shmup. It's practically four games in one with multiple "episodes" and a branching pathed pseudo-rpg mode that's incredibly addictive and well done. It even has a compelling story and setting, which I can only describe as "an insane heavy metal fan tries to write a setting around h.r giger's paintings" with lore and an unfolding epic saga of humanities return to humanity gradually uncovered across all the episodes and playthroughs. Even if you're not much of a shmupper, I highly recommend this game. It's just stupidly fun to play and this guy really knew how to make a shmup that should appeal even to normies.
